just guessing it's probably 308win or 30-06, since those are the most common hunting cartridges with relevant power. if you want a bit more power new zealand trophy hunters advise 7mm mag and 300 win mag as well, so it might be one of those too, assuming 7mm mag is actually common in NZ. 300win mag is no slouch, so if you were just asking for a cartridge that has good terminal ballistics there isnt an animal in the world that will eat one.
