Why bother trying to badly imitate him? How come Joan Baez becomes a beauty?

I am amazed at how many reviews wanted psychoanalysis. But this movie is simply a snapshot of America in the age of Dylan. A young man who propelled a political movement with his song and lyrics, found fame and fortune in that movement, then needed to break loose in order to grow and make new music. The chaotic and rapid change happening to him in those few years was also happening in the country and it's what makes this movie so compelling. I lived this era. The folk scene was a youth movement of the Communist Party gaining power but it relied on this music to maintain traction. That's why Pete Seeger's heart broke when Dylan left. He was their "voice of a generation" albeit reluctant and finally, resentful. Dylan saw rock and roll was the future. You don't need to know what made him tick. He was an artist. He had to create. And create he did.

This film was absolutely brilliant. I was around in the 60s and it brought it all back. Your criticism is unfounded

I'm trying to appreciate the film but the singing is really bad. (After I got pass the opening songs it got better)

Bla bla bla. I'm a real, life long pro musician. A bit too young to be as big a Dylan fan as some I guess, but, this movie was great. It was a PLEASURE to not have to endure too much hate and contention in the story. Music was GREAT and very profound considering the Evil mess the world is in now. I had no idea Dylan won the Nobel Peace prize for his poetic take on the world, sung in his lyrics. Greed and Power lusting will destroy us all. Thanks Bob.

I have enjoyed the discussion that has followed from your video. Good comments all. I want to raise one point. Your primary criticism I think is that this film does not “cut new ground.“ You imply that there’s nothing new here. Well there was nothing new in Casablanca, it was just a story well told that captured us. The same way with this film. a lot of the beauty in this film is in what the filmmakers left out. They didn’t try to superimpose their own conclusions. And as far as cutting new ground - We have an actor doing something very new, learning guitar, vocal and harmonica from the ground up well enough to keep us enthralled for 2 1/2 hours, impersonating arguably the most significant folk singer in the last century. Timmy shows an ownership of these songs, these are our songs, these are songs of the folk. Good video though, you’ve got us talking and that counts

I’m excited to see this but cautious. I was very disappointed in ELIVIS. I thought it was awful.

Its not a documentary, its impressionist interpretation within disciplined cinematic constraints.

As a lifelong musician I’ve compose and wrote since I was in eighth grade. I’m pretty confident this movie allow broader musical audience to understand the need to stand in the moment. Of course, if you’re a Dylan-ographer you selfishly want everyone to jump ahead with you, but that’s just total BS! I’m here to tell you the film adequately and accurately portrayed Dylan’s transition from folk to Electric, because it allowed us to get hooked on who he was as a folk acolyte then icon, and then make a change to electric as the dynamic of his expression grew… I would disagree with the reviewer in that the very nature of expressing ideas is one of the expiration starts and stops. It can look contrived… But really, this is the nature of Finding yourself within your own message It’s an organic process… you can only make the rules or observations Looking back at history, In the moment you’re blind!

I think the film succeeded telling Bob’s story at the time in the 2 plus hours allotted and Timothee nailed it. The actors performed the music themselves live. I am a fan❤️

All along the watchtower. I haven't seen "A Complete Unknown," yet. This seems like a fair review though. How does it compare to Martin Scorsese's "No Direction Home"? That one I saw. A documentary that covers the exact same time period as "A Complete Unknown." And, as far as I know, ends in the same place. It strikes me that they are actually the same movie. Or might as well be. The Dylan movie for me is still, "I'm Not There," by Todd Haynes. Now that is a Bob Dylan movie. More like a visual poem than a movie. And always in the process of becoming. Basically, by following his career quite beyond his supposed 1960's artistic peak. While Bob Dylan's voice may not be what it used to be, always wild and outside, even at his best, it does end up proving the old military adage; quantity has a quality all its own. You might call that a Zen, or even, Christian attitude. Certainly a stoic or road warrior one. Because the Bob Dylan line I took from "I'm Not There" proved to be my favorite one so far. "A poem is like a naked person. But a song is something that walks by itself."

great video! I hope this tip help but I would suggest slowing down your speaking and focus on the annunciation. You have given a great analysis but some of it is mumbled or rushed. By making it easier to listen the audience watching will be more willing to stay. Very great analysis tho and I hope the best for you:)
