Crafting the Call
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 ม.ค. 2024
From Vin Scully to Jon Miller to Jason Benetti, baseball broadcasters have charmed, entertained, and captivated us. Josh Suchon, the voice of the Albuquerque Isotopes, and Jesse Goldberg-Strassler, the voice of the Lansing Lugnuts, break down every facet of broadcasting in an examination and appreciation of the craft.
Reggie, Sandy, Cookie, and Chaos: The Dodgers/Yankees' Fall Classics
With the New York Yankees meeting the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series, Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Josh Suchon look back on lowlights and highlights from the prior championship meetings between the two franchises.
From Howard Cosell sniping at Keith Jackson in 1981 to Reggie Jackson battling Bob Welch in 1978 and becoming Mr. October in 1977, Sandy Koufax dominating in 1963, all the way back to Cookie Lavagetto's heroics in 1947 and Hugh Casey's collapse in 1941... things have happened when the Dodgers and Yankees met up. (We talked about Don Larsen's perfect game way back in our second episode, but this, too, was an incredible thing that happened in a Dodgers/Yankees Fall Classic. If you can find great radio/tv broadcast moments from Billy Martin's 1953 walkoff and the Dodgers' 1955 triumph, send them our way!)

For decades, when baseball broadcasters called games on the road, they did so from the home radio studio with the help of on-site messages delivered via telegraph. Each season, the Lansing Lugnuts' Jesse Goldberg-Strassler re-creates a game in the old tradition. This week on Crafting the Call, Josh Suchon picks his brain about the experience. It is an absolute crime that you didn’t mention Dave Niehaus’ best and most iconic call of all time. The greatest moment in Mariners history, one that saved the team and saved baseball in Seattle. Edgar’s double in the 1995 ALDS. It is absolutely unbelievably perfect. I loved the podcast but the fact you didn’t mention it at all makes me question lots of things…
A Yankee/Dodger World Series brings out the Baseball History geek in me! The 12th time it’s happened! Great video guys!
Is a "Cardinal Rules of Broadcasting" book in the mix?
Gary Cohen for the Mets is great but it irritates me everytime he says "The ballgame is tied at 3 & 3"....the game is tied at 3 is all he has to say & he has done that forever.
Tom Hamilton calling the Jose Ramirez / Tim Anderson fight is forever my #1 😂
What's really dumb about the radio broadcast video is they're completely missing Finley's leadoff single in the bottom of the 6th.
CBS highlight feature feat. national radio calls w/ Jack Buck & Sparky Anderson. The soundtrack from "Back to the Future" just makes it even more epic. th-cam.com/video/eB2JHnWPonw/w-d-xo.html
My first time to the Coliseum I was eight years old and it was April of 1968, NY vs Oak. Micky Mantle homered in the first and the A's walked it off in 11. My parents were from Philly and their first date was an A's game in 1948. My Mom's first time to Shibe Park was 1936, her all time favorite A's player was Wally Moses. My brother worked for the organization at the Coliseum in the mid 80's to mid 90's. By that time I had moved to Alaska, but I always made it down to the Coliseum for World Series and Grateful Dead New Years runs. I snuck into the 89 World Series by going through the front office with my brother, shaking Sandy Alderston's hand along the way (the Haas family, now those were owners). I raised two A's fans in Alaska by being their LL & HS Baseball umpire/coach and taking them to a week of Spring Training games every March for a decade 96 to 06. I've watched damn near every A's game since streaming has been a thing, and before that we used to get the A's on TV sometimes on Sundays, the highlight being watching Dallas Braden's perfect game with my son or taking both my kids to the Bar to watch the 20 wins in a row. I took off work for Game 162. I made my last trip to the Coliseum in May, for the Texas series, finishing off with a Double Header sitting in Sec. 119 at the top of the A's tunnel. A's games, Raiders games,, Day On The Greens and then Warriors games, concerts and New Years Grateful Dead runs next store. I always hoped that the Coliseum would have become the Fenway of the cookie cutter era. Now all of that has to come to an end because of one man. FJF
Scutaro went on to get his World Series ring at last, six years later as a Giant.
My two favorite moments at the Coliseum were Fan Appreciation Day 1988 when the whole stadium drowned out Roy Steele when he announced Jose Canseco in the starting lineup, and two years later Aug 15 of 1990 when Mark McGwire launched a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat the Red Sox, at a time when Oakland and Boston were running into each other in the ALCS every year.
Celebrating an incredibly historic team in one of the best stadiums and in the first two minutes, “this is bigger than you and me”😂 No kidding 😂 SMH

I Was There For The Very 1st Pitch in 1968..............I Was There For The Very Last Out In 2024
Classy As Fans
Like a funeral? That's a little dramatic. lol
To be fair everyone I’ve spoken to who went to the game said it was a mix of a playoff atmosphere with the mix of a funeral. There’s generations of families who have gone to games at the coliseum, a lot of memories from the 72-74 World Series dynasty to Rickey Henderson breaking records in a building and team no one will see again again.
Washington almost got the Padres in 1974 to the point where TOPPS actually printed baseball cards of Padre players which said Washington NL.
The classic 'Washington "NAT'L LEA." ' cards!
Very powerful episode guys! I was too young to remember the A's leaving KC, but my family talked about it. My first game was the Royals vs the Senators in the old KC Municipal Stadium, with my dad and uncle. Being in Lansing, we don't have the same connection to the stadium in Oakland, but certainly to the many former Lugnut players on the team. Good job gentlemen!
Connies Athletics still restless, still not home. The Elephant wanders on.
Cool throwback moment during the expos game highlight. the mention of Matt Trainor playing Catcher in that game. It was way before your time Jesse but he was the original Lugnuts catcher on their first team.
Oh yes! (And then went on to marry an Olympic legend.)
Where are the highlight's of 70's championship run?
Boy I miss Bill King so much!!
The Memories will never die and always be a part of who I am . Great discussion guys thank you !

great job dudes David knows another important behind the scenes name is radio engineer John Trinidad "JT" may he rest in peace great video, had me bawling 😭
It’s virtually impossible for the Lugnuts to ever win a championship. I can’t recall the last time they even almost made the playoffs.
With 86 Mets winning division call, it was Steve Sabrieszki was the play by play man. Kind of the 3rd string WWOR CH 9 guy, locally along with Ralph Kiner & Tim McCarver at that time but neither Tim or Ralph was with Steve there. The other voice there was Rusty Staub "13 years of waiting".
I sure wish we could get the games back on regular radio.
I love this episode! We are so lucky and blessed to have Jesse here in Lansing!!
Actually, I was at Rickey Henderson's first game back with the A's in 1989 and it was on a Thursday. Back then, ABC broadcast games on Thursdays.
1979
@@JohnDoe-fb1uk his first game BACK with the A's was in June, 1989, on a Thursday. I can't quite remember the date, but I was there. It was against the Toronto Blue Jays who won in extra innings 2 to 4.
@@stevepeterson3622 ok
I wonder if Dave has any memories of Bobby Witt's near-perfect game in 1994. (Damn you, Gary Cederstrom!). Roy Steele said on the PA after giving the game info that it was the greatest-pitched game he'd ever seen, including Catfish's perfecto.
The Mt. Davis construction footage while the game was being played was from 5/11/96. The A’s won that day 12-5 over the Twins. Steinbach and Berroa hit home runs.
I still don’t think that stadium in Vegas ever gets built.
Wikipedia is very drunk. In 1980, only the World Series was national exclusive. So that footage from Game 5 of NLCS was indeed the actual live broadcast from WPHL which was the Phillies affiliate, not a recreation.. Game also was carried by WPVI, which is the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia. The game was also allowed on the local radio, so Harry and Andy Musser would switch from TV and radio in the middle innings. Also, the cackling at the end was actually McCarver as Richie Ashburn had gone down to the clubhouse for post game interviews. McCarver had been put on the active roster in September so he could become the first player to play in 4 different decades I believe, I guess being part of their late season battle had him quite giddy. Hope this information is helpful coming from a life long Phillies fan. I will also unashamedly admit to being in tears the day Harry passed away at Nationals Park. He would be having a blast calling this current Phillies team Im sure.
It's a travesty that the situation in Oakland came to this.
I assume you guys will shut this down for the off season. I sure will miss it.
You assume incorrectly - we're going to keep this going!
It looks like you guys are in adjacent hotel rooms for this episode.
Bill White is the play by play broadcaster with Phil Rizzuto in the Yankee/Royal 1978 brawl
Would Luv your commentary on the Nolan RYAN, DAVE WINFIELD BRAWL.RYAN WAS A BULLY.
I saw that Guillien interference too. I've seen that play a million times but never noticed it until this time through. I've always focused on Moseby.
A Paul Carey (Ernie’s partner) episode sometime please!
The BBC call was actually my favorite for the reasons you discuss as you analyze it in detail. He set the moment, he built the excitement as the ball went deep, he talked about the stakes, about the Rangers failure to close out, how Freese had been clutch all post-season.
Chris is 24 years old but given his lineage and his ability to critique his grandfather and his great grandfather, its obvious he has true talent for announcing and he's doing a fabulous job with the Athletics
Would love to hear you guys breakdown the different calls for the Cubs winning the World Series in 2016.
Subscribed. Thanks!
Horror Show is such a great line! The idea of connectivity....makes a ton of sense!
Shea Stadium had a almost fully wooden fence painted Blue until after the 1989 season when they finally padded it after several injuries over the years.
Had the TV on mute and listing on the radio in 1990. Lol
No Jack Buck call on CBS Radio?
During seavers no hitter , Marty said no hits throughout. He never believed in the superstition
Simply a joy listening to your wonderful conversation with Joe ! As a West Coast "Kid" I found your show enthralling and educational regarding Ernie Harwell! "The Fan in Wala Wala...." I absolutely love how Ernie used that phrase! (Thank you for sharing!) 1984...the year I graduated high school!
Red Sox announcers were the great Ned Martin and the late Jerry Remy
Love you guys so far, just subbed. I’m a Mets fan but if ever you could do any content on longtime Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas, possibly his 1987 call of Mike Schmidt’s 500th Home Run could be a great episode.
