Seminoles originated with African runaways during Spanish colonization. When the black runaways assimilated with Native Americans in Savannah ga and Jacksonville Florida area. the word Seminoles was used to describe Indians and Africans alike. “Maroons” was the Spanish named use to describe African runaways. The word maroon means runaway or wild animals. But Seminole was used by Spanish to describe a particularly resident and strong band of African runaways they couldn’t stop as early as 1700, maybe even earlier like 1650. The word was adapted by all Europeans in the south to describe the situation without saying black runaways. The powers that be didn’t want settlers afraid to move into Georgia and Florida so the name was strategic in describing this marroon and Indian union without emphasizing black runaways in records and statements. This kept the common white man from realizing the Seminole war was just as much a Negro war as it was a supposed Indian war.
