Hawk eating a Squirrel killed by a car
I believe the squirrel was hit by a car. The vulture was the first on the scene but by the time I got my camera, the Hawk came along and dragged the squirrel into the grass. Unfortunately, we see a lot of dead squirrels on the road as well as rabbits, skunks, and a few other animals. I help them when I can but most of the time they're already dead. I checked this guy before grabbing my camera and sure enough, he was gone. Most of the time we see only the Vultures feeding on them but the Hawks will definitely take over if they want.

    I successfully replaced this plate without taking body apart. The plate can come out but bracket needs a slot to run ribbon thru to allow enough travel for gimble movement. I used a replacent plate $15.00 and long needle nose tweezers. 15 min fix

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool!...glad to hear you were able to do it. If I ever need to do it again I will try it that way.

    • @trkempton
      @trkempton 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not think he is telling the truth. I attached the plate without pulling it apart BUT there was not enough slack in the ribbon for the Gimbal to have full range of motion. I tried several different ways and even tried cutting slots in the bracket to run the ribbon inside but it was all in vein. The impassible hurdle is the screws. Since you do not have the drone apart you have to pull the gimbal up to access the screw to attach it to the plate. When you do that you are leaving too much of the ribbon on the other side. I was unable to pull the slack up and make it all work. If he did manage to do it I would love to see a video. Even then taking the drone apart was easy and then you can leave the anti vibration plate as is with no need to cut it.

    • @JasonFroude
      @JasonFroude 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same issue of not having enough travel until I cut the slot. Here are the key things that I did. 1. The has an anchor that was originally between gimble and plate. This needed to be free to to allow gimbal assy to be attached to plate before re-installing. 2. I did use a fine hack saw blade to create a slot to feed ribbon thru prior to attaching assy and plate. 3. Once this was done I manually checked travel to ensure ribbon was not stopped it. 4. I used long needle tweezers from a watch makers repair kit I had to slightly stretch elastic and get plate back in. It worked for me. I tried a couple times and the ribbon placement is key.

    Appreciate the video, Terry! I'm struggling to get the top lid of in order to access the gimbal plate (which cracked). I've made it through the back of the drone's top lid, but the sides of the front and the front it self is stuck, and I have already bent a bit of the plastic trying to pop it up. Any advice, or suggestions for what kind of tool would be suitable for this operation? I notice your plastic tool, and I've tried something similar without luck. I'm afraid to break the plastic. - Hal

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear that. I used a plastic pry bar for cell phones. Go to Amazon and type in something like "phone opener tool". You will see things similar to mine which should all work. Im not sure how else to help as it can be a pain sometimes. Just keep going slow and careful. You might want to buy more than one tool as well as they wear down easy. If you break the top then search ebay. I have seen tops on there many times for reasonable prices.

    Hi Terry it's Steve we are just south of DFW airport in Bedford not far from you. Ok email is Str1776@gmail.com I am waiting for the part ordered last week .I ordered both types metal and the 3D printer Terry how long did you wait for the part ?

  • @steveruiz5259
    @steveruiz5259 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would you think the metal plate is strong enough to allow that slot to be notched out a bit enough to allow the ribbon to wedge in then turned and still hold in place, saving time but still being strong enough !

      are you trying to replace the plate without removing the top of the drone?

  • @steveruiz5259
    @steveruiz5259 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Terry , great video I have watched it several times. I have the exact same issues I ordered another part as well the metal and the 3D printer plastic one just in case. Terry what would you charge to do another video on a white background changing my part out.I already removed the broken gimble plate and this looks easier than it is Terry I'm sure .I will ship the Mavic to you and pay for your time.Your already an expert Terry .Question Terry I have with the metal plate you used opposed to the 3D printer plastic material . Would you think the metal is strong enough to allow the slot that the ribbon slides through to be cut just enough to slide the ribbon in then turned, saving some time and still being metal material strong enough to support the stress. The metal material is the bomb weighing only 4 grams it's well worth it.Anyway thanks for the video and again think about what you would charge.Thanks again Steve

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen the plastic plate on ebay but its hard to tell if its better. It might be but I would need to hold it in my hand to see how sturdy it is. I charge 75 an hour and that should only be an hour job for the plate and then whatever shipping cost is to send it back to you. I just cant guarantee that is all thats wrong with it of course. Some people have replaced the plates only to find out that they had other issues and still had to send it back to DJI.

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, my video still worked. You may have a damaged ribbon or camera or maybe a ribbon is loose inside or something.You probably cant break it any more than it is so its probably worth opening up and looking at. I wouldnt buy any parts till you figure out the video feed.

    • @nickbugbee21
      @nickbugbee21 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the reply. I watched your video and opened it up but did not see any visible damage to any wires. the plate is definitely broken.

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did it hit really hard? It may have damaged the camera or the ribbon but sometimes the damage to a ribbon can be hard to see. You could try buying a ribbon from ebay but it might be best to send it back to DJI. Its possible the board was damaged as well so if you cant see something obvious then its just a gamble to which it is. Sorry to hear it got that jacked up. Mine only fell a few feet and landed in the grass so I was lucky it didnt do more damage. Still kicking myself for not trying to catch it but I didnt want to get jacked up by the blades. If only I had a little net.

    Do you know anyone who has successfully replaced a gimbal ribbon cable? Getting the gimbal off seems doable, but how bad is it to take apart the arms to install a new cable? $39 vs $385 for repair seems like it's worth trying...

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why do you think the arms need to come off?

    • @jordanbergeson
      @jordanbergeson 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not the Mavic arms sorry, I mean the gimbal parts. The only videos or explanations I've seen just talk about replacing the broken plate but don't talk about how to replace the cable ribbon. I'm assuming it has several connections for each part of the gimbal? Any advice or videos on getting the cable out? I just had a crash and the gimbal survived. It is still moving freely, but I can see the ribbon cable ripped and hanging down from aircraft. I'm getting an error in the app because obviously it can't move the gimbal.

    • @jordanbergeson
      @jordanbergeson 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might be completely overestimating the difficulty, but I just haven't seen anyone do it yet so I'm a little nervous.

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmm. Are you talking about the ribbon cable in the video where you see me take the two small screws out of the camera that are holding the small piece of broken gimbal plate? If so, the one end to the board is easy but I didnt open up the actual camera to see how the ribbon was attached but if it just plugs in then I would think its easy to do..The other cable just threads up through the body and is very easy. Its really not that bad. Just go slow and careful.

    • @leonhuinga2987
      @leonhuinga2987 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TerryRGraham

      Leon Huinga ....hmmm....I don't know what they would call that. It's that silver colored mesh of wire. I thought it was just bare wire but I really didn't look at it too much. If it's just bare wire you could make your own. Did you open the camera end to see how it's attached or if it's even possible to replace it? Also, where would you be able to order from? I thought they wouldn't sell parts.

  • @Hyperfocall
    @Hyperfocall 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nope. It wasn't. It is working now. It definitely needs to go through that slot. It's not panning that well but I guess the Mavic doesn't really pan. You have to yaw the whole drone. There were some critical moments where I really wanted to see what you were doing in that other video but you were off camera. Such as how the ribbon came through, in what direction, and then also where it snapped back on the board cause I forgot. How important do you think the reapplication of the silicone is on those two guys inside? Oh, and thanks again, the plate and your tutorial video definitely saved me time and money on getting a repair from DJI

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im not sure on the silicone. You have to figure they put it there for a reason but I think its just for the vision sensors so it would probably just impact those sensors and give an error if the ribbon pops off. Perhaps vibration might cause it to pop off. Glad you got it working.

  • @Hyperfocall
    @Hyperfocall 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I put the plate in without threading the ribbon through. It's giving me an overloaded gimbal error message. So perhaps it really does have to thread through. Which means taking the whole thing apart right? Ugh.

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sucks. Did it look like the ribbon was hanging on something? Hopefully its just that and not something wrong with the camera too. Taking the thing apart really wasn't that bad.

  • @Hyperfocall
    @Hyperfocall 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you know the guage of the aluminum?

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to Knowonefpv its 1.5mm or about 18 gauge. The plate definitely works. The only reason that I bothered to make a video was to kind of prove that his method works and that its not that difficult to do. DJI is still using the same plate for repairs and I've heard of the repair costing anywhere from 185.00 to 300.00.

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, Knowonefpv sold some plates to a guy that does repairs. You might email him and see who it is and what the cost is. His email is in the description.

  • @Hyperfocall
    @Hyperfocall 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the ribbon absolutely have to go through that hole or can it remain under the plate? Do you really need to take the whole thing apart? If the ribbon doesn't move when the gimbal pans or tilts then it might be fine without threading it through right?

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wondered the same thing after I repaired it but I never did investigate further. However, I did think of making a small cut on the aluminum plate and bending part of the cut out to the side and then bending back after the ribbon is inside. Aluminum is really easy to cut and bend so you might have luck that way. If I had to do it again I might try it. Let us know if you try it. Hope it works for you.

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should add that its probably going to be easier to just open the thing up but let me know how it goes.

    • @Hyperfocall
      @Hyperfocall 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What about magnetic interference with the compass? Not a problem with the aluminum I'm guessing.

    • @TerryRGraham
      @TerryRGraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It didnt cause an issue for me or know1fpv. You could always hold a compass up to a piece of Aluminum to test but Im pretty sure Aluminum does not disturb the compass. Real planes have a ton of Aluminum and I dont see them flying crazy. A steel plate might jack it up.

      Hello, you can email this guy at know1rc@Gmail.com. He is the one selling it. He will send you a payment link and then mail it to you. I think it was 35.00 for a flat plate without the holes in it or 50.00 for the camera holes pre drilled and the plate to be pre bent to fit. Its probably worth the extra 15.00 to have that done for you.
