How does Lavardin compare to Willsenton R8?

Tastes are subjective, but I like the attack and forwardness of the R8 better than the more mellow sound of the R300. My main concern would be listening fatigue, but I haven't read many complaints from R8 owners about that.

Lamp are more lively for sure, spacialy on mid-high.

Sounds same to me

not so far apart...if you are not 100% concentrated, it is hard to tell a difference...

I had the R300 for over a year and had no problem so far. To me it sound better than my previous Accuphase e280. Skunkie Design give very negative review about R300 but it is fine for me. I'm not a technical man and I'm not going to make any modification on it.

At least here it sounds very mediocre.

It would be interesting to listen to this video using a set of B & W speakers and a nice, clean transistor amplifier to compare the two sounds. Power is important in order to give dynamic range and the 300B single-ended amps are lacking in this department. However, the class A sound is really good, just not enough of it. I would rather have the push-pull KT88 amp for a bit of kick, forgoing the 300B sound and price! I own a Bell 3030 stereo amplifier my dad bought circa 1960, which he had paired with a set of University 8" 2-way (coaxial type, with a little horn tweeter in the center of the woofer!) speakers, which had a ported cabinet. I believe that the rated output for the push-pull 6V6s was around 14-15 watts. This was my first experience with "hi-fi" equipment (thanks to Dad) and when he replaced it with a solid state receiver in the late 1970s, he gave it to me. It of course isn't a high-end amp, with clear-coated transformers and chromed chassis but it is a good old warm sounding tube amp. I replaced the vacuum tube rectifier with a couple of silicone diodes and replaced the 6V6s with 6550s, which seemed to bump the power up a bit. I was smart enough to research the tubes using an RCA tube manual before choosing the 6550s, comparing pin-out, load impedance and operating voltages but I didn't consider heater current or stress on other components. The did work and sound good with the mods but it wasn't ran hard for hours so I think it is OK. I plan on restoring it back to stock as part of my retirement plans, God willing.

R300 sounds more spacious, airy, holographic, well rounded. R8 feels too vocal focused and losing out on details. Thanks for the demo! How’s the headphone output if you’ve tried it?

Ouch, sounds absolutely terrible

As a big Gregory Porter fan (saw him last week) I have to say on this occasion, I prefer his voice on the R300, which is a bit annoying as I’ve just ordered an R8 😢😂

Those Tung Sol are so flat sounding. Almost muffled. Hate the sound.

Personally for me the R8 has more detail, more life and is less veiled than the R300. I find the R8 more exciting and engaging . Great comparison video and well done on the editing and quality of the sound . ❤

Stick a set amplifier in and there's only one winner

I preferred the R8 and I'm planning on buying one. I've watched all the reviews and Skunkie's teardowns and I'm still getting the improved version. I had considered the R300 but decided against it since I already have a 10 watt Cayin.

Seems to be a lot more life through the Lavardin.

If using ( 2 ) smsl vmv A1 bi amp will be better?

The tone sounds fine. I've heard March Audio in the flesh.. Just wondering how the imaging is, side to side , height and depth? That's where my main concerns are. I'll soon find out as I have one coming this week.

I have an early R8. With the flaws Skunkie Designs pointed out. I have not made a single upgrade regarding the flaws and have had no problem whatsoever. Just replaced the standard Wilsenton tubes with really good ones (Melz, KT88 Psvane/ Linlai KT-88, etc.). Great soundstage, good precision. Any well recorded live album brings you straight to the venue…

Upgrading the tubes on this willsenton brings it to a whole different level. 7 to a 8.5 on scale 1 to 10.

Lavardin: the brand of those who know. This amp buries amps worth two to three times its price. The sound is lively, fabulous mids and bass that goes very, very low. To listen to it is to adopt it.

I read that the R300 has a wider and deeper soundstage than the Mira Ceti 300B. Would you agree with that?
