We are visiting Twistleton Scar in the Yorkshire Dales to carry out some climbs. This climb is Fretsaw HVD * .
The wind was blowing a gale when we arrived on site, but backed of sufficiently to allow some drone footage. Despite the wind and rain. we really enjoyed this climb with its spectacular views.

Orange rope was caught on the cams on the left side of harness. I'm more interested in why the cam pulled out.
Love the outline of the route in the beginning of the vid, dropped a follow 👍🏼
Gear on the harness weighs you down. Another piece or two to back up that top cam, next time. Watching back you can see that the cam walked due to the extension being too short. It walked into a too open position. The helmet was a good idea.
hi all ,do u remeber or know is it possible to make top rope there or somewhere near?
that looks like a super nice climb, i hope i can still climb like that when i'm your age!
maybe just keep the real audio instead of a stuck record next time as that soundtrack ruined an otherwise great but of camerawork and a well climbed route
In the rain?
Nice climb and great video - many thanks!
I remember that top section well! A real struggle! Love the filming of these climbs. Gives a much better idea of how difficult it is than a head cam view.
Hi Mark, thanks for your comment and feedback it really helps me to find out what people want to see in these videos. I agree with you about head cam videos, they make me feel dizzy! I do use one occasionally for a specific series if shots. Please ensure that you subscribe and press the like and notification button as I have some good videos in production now. Most importantly, “Don’t get stuck in the chimney!” Enjoy your explorations.
Re the Nikwax comment in the video, I went into Hathersage Alpkit recently and they’ve stopped doing refills. Not enough of their customers used the facility, so it wasn’t viable. Shame.
Hi @avicm1954, Thanks for the Nikwax update. Enjoy your explorations.
Great climbing Thanks for sharing
Hi Paul, Thanks for taking the time to comment. Really glad that you're enjoying the climbs. We have more climbs coming very soon. Enjoy your explorations
Great climbing and great footage as usual Big Thanks
Hi Paul Thanks again for your comments. I grabbed the only camera I had available to get some footage of this Pedestal Route video. If you want to see the complete Neb Finish, it’s also the exit form my “Technical Slab with Neb Finish” video. Enjoy your explorations
@@Up-and-Around Thanks I will make sure to check that out All the best
Isn't this 'Valkyrie'? Or is the typo deliberate to generate comments?! ;)
Hi @frfr335 One of your questions is absolutely correct. I’ll leave you to decide which one it is. 😊 I’ve corrected the title and notes but can’t’ do anything about the video btw. Thanks Enjoy your explorations
Great to see another video featuring one of my favourite climbing destinations! Been 40 years since I last climbed, but this really bring back the memories 🙂
Hi Stu, I go to most of these venues regularly and always enjoy my time there. I’m currently working on large video project in the peaks which will be revealed in the new year. The peaks are worth a visit at any time even if it’s just to enjoy the scenery. Enjoy your explorations
I really need to plan a trip to the Peak District. The lines you guys climb look really fun.
Hi Robert, You wouldn’t regret it. There are plenty of good climbing venues and beautiful scenery. We are due to climb in that area again before the end of the year. Enjoy your explorations
45 years old this year. My wife and I started climbing in June. We're hitting sport routes, but the hunger for trad climbing gets ever stronger as we watch routes like this. What a treat! Wishing you all the best.
Hi David, Welcome to the channel. It’s good to hear that you are both getting into your climbing. The sport routes are good and present a different set of challenges. In fact, we were out sport climbing on “Catch the Pigeon”, 4c * at Trevor Quarry, near Llangollen in Wales on the 29th October 24. That video will be coming up on the channel in the near future. You should try trad. There are some fabulous venues in this country. If you have a look through my 70 at 70 series of climbs, you will find plenty of accessible climbs to start you off. If you want specific pointers, let me know. Thanks for the comment and keep on watching and commenting. Enjoy your explorations.
Lovely route. Top end. Was polished and strenuous 30yrs ago!
Hi Lee, I know that all of our climbers found this climb exciting and a bit challenging, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The view from the top of the wall is amazing. I’ll have to remember to video it next time. Thanks for the comment and keep on watching and commenting. Enjoy your explorations.
Happy memories from about twenty years go. I'm 84 now and reduced to six mile walks. I live only a few miles from Trowbarrow.
Hi Conrad, Welcome to the channel. We had a great day at Trowbarrow and intend to visit again. You live in a part of the country that has great climbing, great vistas and a lot of history. Keep enjoying your walks. Enjoy your explorations.
Edge of the chair moment watching your “foot slip combo” on the lower crux: right foot slips, desperate left foot pops up onto the rope then rolls off and it too slips, exactly as you connect again with the high right smear (sharp intake of breath). Your body braces and you relax into an apparent stress free spotlessly clean ground up ascent. Pure magic.
Hi Robert, Welcome back and thanks for the great comment. That’s a very good description of that move! Andrew does those quite often and has usually taken precautions before the move, but they are entertaining. So keep watching and commenting as we have plenty more to come. Enjoy your explorations.
@ I think Andrew invented a new climbing move…..the moon walk. Andrew’s moon walk! That might stick.
Did this as a final climb years ago by headtorch! Would love to go back and do it in these conditions. Great filming and as others have said, so nice to see lower graded climbs as it’s definitely my level!
Hi Mark, That must have been and entertaining climb! Very happy that you are enjoying the videos and thanks for the compliment, it is appreciated. We believe that it important to show climbs at as many levels as we can, and hope that beginners as well as the more experienced climbers, enjoy the channel content. Please spread the word, subscribe and press the like and notify buttons so that you don’t miss any of the videos. Enjoy your explorations
That’s a lovely line. Great stuff.
Hi Robert, We all love a good line. I enjoyed your Climbing the walls and Doppelgänger videos. You should film some more. Enjoy your explorations
@@Up-and-Around thanks for the encouragement :0) You’re doing such good work, it is inspiring. BTW I got 1000’ of moderate crag climbing in this weekend, it was so much fun. It’s been a while since that was the norm. Staying in the game IS the game!
Yay! A new climb, once again from somewhere I never climbed myself. Great stuff!
Hi Stu, Another testing climb. This was steep, complicated and definitely bold. I know that the climbers enjoyed the challenge. I was also very pleased that my radio mic survived a drop onto rock of around 15 metres without any damage. Enjoy your explorations
Stonking route, great climbing and wonderful drone work! I never got to climb on sea cliffs, so this was a real treat.
Hi Stu, Yes this was a great climb and a challenging one to video. I was operating from the Baggy point cliffs opposite the Long Rock Slab rock face. Flying at that distance requires a lot of concentration. At one point the drone tried to land on the sea on its return trip! The weather that day was perfect and the climbing and views were excellent. The area is well worth a visit even just for a stroll. Enjoy your explorations
It's nice to see some of the "easier" routes being climbed instead of E9's which are ten a penny on TH-cam 😄
Hi Fred, Thanks for taking the time to comment. You are correct, it has always been our intention to show the complete range of variety that our sport has. Especially those aspects that are valuable to starting or novice climbers. That is why we show complete climbs and variations chosen by different climbers on the same route. Our next project is a look at sport climbing, which we will be filming over the coming weeks. If you want to watch a more challenging climb, look out for the VS 4c *** Jean Jeanie at Trowbarrow Quarry in Lancashire, which will be on the channel from Friday 5th October. Please ensure that you have subscribed, press the notify and like buttons and please keep on commenting. Enjoy your explorations.
I’ve done this route a few times now. Always felt that it was quite hard for a VDiff.
Hi @WillL0, I agree with you, this is a little more complicated than it looks and everyone climbs slightly differently. I think we all also have some moves and techniques that we prefer to use which have a bearing on how we climb. That’s the beauty of this sport, we can do it our own way! Please keep watching, commenting and please subscribe and hit the like and notify buttons. Enjoy your explorations.
Just found your channel yesterday and have been binge-watching ever since. Great stuff, reminds me of my rock climbing days in the Peak and Wales, many years ago. So good to see some of the climbs I did back then - but not this one, which looks harder than a VS to me! Inspiring stuff, keep posting content please!
Hi Stu, Welcome to my channel. I’m very happy that you’re enjoying the content. We have plenty more in the camera waiting to be edited and will be out creating some sport climbing videos in Wales next week. So make sure that you have subscribed and hit the notification and like buttons. I have just subscribed to your channel as I have been a keen interest in your subject too. I don’t get to do so much programming as I used to professionally. I shall also be taking a close look at your Alexa videos. Please keep watching and commenting. Enjoy your explorations.
Thanks Great footage as usual.
Welcome back again Paul, Beckermet Slab is one of my favourite videos. I just love the view as the camera rotates around the arete and then pulls back to show Mauds Garden. A very picturesque scene. Thanks for watching and commenting. Enjoy your explorations.
When I did it, a long time ago, no chalk or cams. The ‘ hidden ‘ foot hold had me worried
Hi again Andrew, I know what you mean! It takes a certain amount of faith and a handful of courage to make that leap of faith! Please keep watching and commenting Enjoy your explorations.
A great route
Hi Andrew, I agree with you. The name “Valkarie” means “Chooser of the slain” in Norse mythology. When you stand under this classic exposed climb, you just feel how imposing it is. I think the climbers did it justice on this occasion. I’m glad you enjoyed this video. I have plenty more footage still in edit, so make sure that you are subscribed, fit the notification and like buttons and please keep on commenting. Enjoy your explorations.
One of the best routes around
Hi Richard, I have to agree with you on that! I’d been hoping to get video on this climb for a while and I was lucky on this occasion to catch them climbing. I was on my way back to the Don Whillans hut for a cuppa when I spotted them climbing. We were on a BMSCMC climbing weekend and I had been videoing around The Sloth. If you haven’t seen that video yet, it’s worth a view! I’m glad you enjoyed this video. I have plenty more footage still in edit, so make sure that you are subscribed, fit the notification and like buttons and please keep on commenting. Enjoy your explorations.
Advanced rope and rope drag management required. Well done!
Hi @CCCarl123, Valkrie is well known for its ability to cause rope drag. I’ve heard of a good few climbs where the rope was completely jammed. We were on a BMSCMC climbing weekend. The lead climber on this climb was also featured on another BMSCMC weekend climb, Baggy Point, Twinkletoes video. I’m glad you enjoyed this video. I have plenty more footage still in edit, so make sure that you are subscribed, fit the notification and like buttons and please keep on commenting. Enjoy your explorations.
Great video and great climbers. Thanks for sharing
Welcome back Paul, Yes, the girls did well on this climb. The lead climber was also on the Baggy Point, Twinkletoes video. She is a good strong and confident climber. Enjoy your explorations.
Great video and even better climbing?
Hi @nickonfoot, Thanks for commenting. I had been hoping to catch this climb for a while. We we’re on a BMSCMC club weekend and I had not long finished filming around The Sloth. We we’re staying in the Don Whillans hut at the foot of Valkarie and I was on my way back there when I noticed that the girls were climbing. I’m very happy that I was there for this climb! I have plenty more footage still in edit, so make sure that you are subscribed, fit the notification and like buttons and please keep on commenting. Enjoy your explorations.
Gear placement and climbing standards in almost perfect synchronicity.
Hi @eccehomer8182, thanks for your great comment! This video featured the BMSCMC’s oldest and youngest climbers. I hope that you continue to watch and enjoy our content. Remember to subscribe, press the like and notify buttons and keep on commenting. Enjoy your explorations.
@@Up-and-Around Hmm... becoming the BMSCMC’s oldest climber appears to be more by luck than judgment.
Sounds like a busy day at the crag--lots of voices. Thanks for these videos!
Hi @CCCarl123, the Black Hawk Traverse climb and the next climb Hollybush crack, were the last 2 climbs of a total of 13 climbs that day. We had been climbing at Burbage North earlier and moved to Stanage popular late in the day. It certainly was busy, as is normal for Stanage Popular. There was also a paraglider flying up and down the crag. I’m really happy that you are enjoying the content. Please subscribe, press the like and notify buttons, and continue to comment. Feedback is always valued. Enjoy your explorations.
I'll go and watch the video you've put together so well. It's the best.
Hello again Mr Blackman, I have been looking at and enjoying your videos. The DJI Avanta 2 is an awesome drone and you use it well. I have subscribed to your channel so that I can enjoy more. Enjoy your explorations.
Very Impressive Lead this one!! Wondering why no redirect was used when leading away from the hanging belay?
Thanks for your comment. When a still was posted from this video, someone else made a similar (but less polite) comment. What I should have done, as leader, was clip in above the belayer to protect the belay. Since starting to collaborate on these videos my practice as a leader has come under much closer scrutiny. I welcome that. I recently took someone else up the Neb finish and was more careful when leading away from my belayer. Yes, as there’s no protection on this pitch a leader fall could be traumatic for the second! A runner in the corner above the belayer is essential. Any other suggestions welcomed. 😊
Hi @infomedia6163, Thanks for your valid comment. We welcome questions like this one. I hope that the avicm1954 reply answered your quastion fully and hope that you continue to watch and comment. Enjoy your explorations.
Great video again Thanks - Did this route myself Today on TRS Very enjoyable
Hi Paul, Thanks again for your continued support and very happy that you enjoyed this video. I haven’t looked at TRS climbing yet. How do you manage the chimney on TRS? Enjoy your explorations.
@@Up-and-Around Hi Thanks for the response. I`d tied my rope off above the chimney on the giant boulder. I abseiled down the larger opening (with the sticky out rock) and then setup up a rebelay using the large rock near the edge of the main climb and threw the rope down the main climb. I actually abseiled down the climb and then climbed back up. To escape from the ledge I free climbed up the smaller of the openings - right at the back of the gully. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for the great content.
Well done you! Sounds like a great way to climb. Sometimes we all just want to enjoy things our own way and in our own time. Keep on enjoying your explorations.
@@Up-and-Around Yes it suits me as I can pop up the Roaches on a whim or when weather looks good as its only about 30 mins from me. Its not easy to get anybody to go out climbing with at short notice. Hope you keep posting the great videos. Thanks again
I think this is my favourite climbing channel. Great stuff thanks for the effort of making these videos. It's nice to watch people climbing reasonable trad that is accessible to lots of climbers. I love watching hard climbing too, but this is way more relatable and interesting to watch. And a great way to learn as well! Thank you!
Hi @2rfg949 Thank you for your great comment. It’s very pleasing to know that we are doing work that is appreciated. We have plenty more videos on the way, so please keep watching and commenting. Let me know if there is anything you would be interested in us covering and we’ll try and include it in a future video. Enjoy your explorations.
When was Black and Tans downgraded to HD? It gets Severe in my guidebook.

I remember leading that with Bill, years ago. I think I had a go, came back down for a rest and then did it. Good climbing.

you guys go to some nice locations. i like your channel. I'm in Ireland and we're not really blessed by the rock Gods over here lol.
Hi @2rfg949, thanks for the comment. Yes, we’ve been to a good number of venues this year, with more planned. Where are you in Ireland? There seems to be some good climbing over there. Gola, Owey, Cruit, Muckross, Malinbeg and Sail rock and Belshade. Perhaps we’ll have to come over and climb some of those. Enjoy your explorations
@@Up-and-Around I'm in Arklow, about 45 min south of Dublin. I was out with Jerry Moss a few weeks ago, I'm sure you know of him, to check out the cliffs at Arklow South Beach. The idea is to develop them. It's in the IMCs hands, I'm just a sideshow Bob. But if you come this way please let me know. We put up a new route out at Malin Head a few years ago as well. Nasty traverse out and along the point ridge and back. I'd love to meet your crew. Sending Love.
Hi @2rfg949, Sounds amazing! I have planning meeting next week after we do some sport climbing videos in Wales. I’ll have a chat about coming over to Ireland. I’m pretty sure that they would be up to a nasty traverse! Keep on enjoying your explorations.
When critiquing these things, always remember if the climber walks away with a few bruises and a good story then the protection worked. Maybe only just and there are always things that could have been better, but it did work. Good effort on the crux.
