USA Roller Coaster Road Trip Day 11: Hersheypark, PA
Back in May/June 2024 I spent 14 days driving around the USA visiting amusement parks each day and riding 120 roller coasters! Our route took us from Boston airport in a loop, up through New York State to the shores of the Great Lakes, west to Wisconsin and back down through Indiana, Ohio, Pensilvania and back to Boston to complete the loop
This video is Day11 and a visit to Hersheypark, the chocolate corporation’s famous amusement park in Hershey, Pennsylvania. You can also visit Hershey’s Chocolate World next door which offers a free dark ride on the history of Hershey’s chocolate making and giant gift store!
Hersheypark is a giant amusement park with an impressive collection of roller coasters including the 1946 Comet classic wooden coaster, the 1977 SooperDooperLooper and modern thrillers like Wildcat’s Revenge the RMC conversion of the old wildcat and Skyrush the legendary hyper coaster with wing seats.
I’ll share my thoughts, feelings on a busy summer visit to this Pennsylvania amusement park and its roller coasters sharing some tips and tricks along the way to help you plan your own visit to the park, including how to gain a few hours free entry the day before your visit to preview the park!
We also visit the Soda Jerk Diner & Dairy Bar a classic American diner located in Hummelstown, PA just a few minutes drive from Hersheypark.
I hope you enjoyed the video and found helpful.

5 Positive Changes For 2024 At Alton Towers
Hersheypark has to be up there with my top parks to visit in the US. Annoyingly I did actually go to the chocolate factory back in 2008 but missed the park, devastating! Then again, I guess little me wouldn't have been able to ride much anyways :D
Wow thats crazy that you've been to Chocolate World and not the amusement park 😂 ...You missed out on the roller soaker cred!! It's a really easy drive from New York / Philly / Washington DC I'd pair it with Knoebels in the morning and a free preview admission in the evening - then a full day on park the next day
I know right! Talk about missing rare defunct credits 😭 Yeah Knobels looked great in your last video. I’d love to do a similar road trip one day!
Looks like a great park with a very appealing line-up of coasters. I would particularly like to try The Bat.
The Bat is a great swing coaster, shame it’s only 1 lift as most were 2. I didn’t know until recently (despite riding both of them) that The Bat is a clone of Vortex at Canada’s Wonderland! It’s amazing as it’s a terrain layout, at CW it goes on top of the mountain landmark before swishing down a hill and around a lake. They did well to cram it on a hillside in Ohio and make it fit
🦆🪿🎉😊
Seems like an interesting place! I'm a big fan of the seaside and boardwalk parks in North America, and it looks like this place has a similar vibe. I'm planning to visit the UK next year, so I might need to add Fantasy Island to my list.
Yeah I'd say that Fantasy Island is serving Morey's Piers vibes 😂 If there's room in your itinerary for Fantasy Island, I'd also consider Great Yarmouth, as it has some slightly unusual old stuff, in the Roller Coaster (Scenic Railway) and Mini Virgina Reel - and you could probably add the nearby +4 at Pleasurewood Hills in the same day. Thanks for the comment, Hope you have a blast in 2026 in the UK
Steel curtain is an amazing coaster gutted you guys didn’t get it !!!
It’s ok Kennywood is still good without it
does the bonus tip still hold up two years later?
According to the Western Camp website today, they still offer the 5% discount on tickets. can't find any information on the express pass and haven't tested it in a few years apologies.
Duelling coasters definitely count as 2 credits, unless it’s a möbius style one! Question though, do you count relocated coasters as multiple credits if you’ve ridden them in different locations, e.g. all American Triple Loop? :)
No I don’t personally count relocated coasters more than once, so yeah I already had the magnum force / triple loop cred! I use coaster-count.com to track my creds so I’ve got 681 without duplicates or I’d have 699 if I counted duplicates/relocations #stats 😂 Some people do and that’s great for them .. I mean some people count Disk’Os
@
Thanks Jack, very thought-provoking 🤣
Whoops! :D
I meant to say I agree! I count the same way but everyone can count the way they want (except if they count disk’os!) 😉
Is it easy to get to the Disney parks from this hotel?
Hello Rosen Inn international is a great central location for the other attractions (I drive, SeaWorld, Universal lots of places to eat / shop) so if you’re going just for the Disney parks it’s probably not the best location. The hotel offers free shuttles to universal. They do offer a paid Disney shuttle it’s around $18 per person (and has to be booked 24 hours in advance) So depending on your group size it’s probably cheaper to get an Uber/Lyft to Disney which costs around $30 There’s a Lynx (local bus) stop just across the street from the hotel - you need to get the number 8 to SeaWorld and change onto the 350 to Disney Springs If you have a car and are driving the hotel has free parking.
@OutAndBackTravel Hi, thanks for getting back to me with that info. Did a bit of research and I think I will split the hotels on my visit. Do a week at Rosen Inn Lake Buena Vista for easier access to the Disney parks. Then book into Rosen Inn International Drive to cover Universal and SeaWorld easier. This should hopefully cut down on the need for Uber/Lyft as those costs can add up! I won't be renting a car as the parking costs at the parks are insane!
Missed this one! Great one as always Stu, love how you keep things informative and funny, first time I’ve heard that triple loop used to be at flamingo land! It seems like an cute and fun, if slightly janky park :D
Cheers Jack, as always I really appreciate the support ☺️ Yeah the cute and jank can be the perfect tonic to the chain/corporate theme parks it’s an interesting place for sure
Looks amazing 🤩
All five parcs are so beautiful👌my personal favourite theme parc in Europe is Europapark 😍 in Rust/Germany. Great video thanks👍
Thanks for the comment. Euorpa Park is an incredible theme park, we love visiting too
I think they have to do a new model or upgrade for the UOAP - because of the new Hotels and Perks and Epic. Also ... it might be a sad thing if you book a 2 or 3 night trip at Helios and you are only able to visit it on one day.
Completely agree, especially with how much $ Helios is! It would be a shame to stay there and only get to visit the park once. It's not much more or sometimes cheaper to get an express pass hotel back at the original campus.
My brain says wait until 2026 for the park to park 14 day pass.... But like you I think I'm going to crack... Might go next Oct and buy an additional 1 day epic separate ticket so at least I'll have 2 days in epic with the 14 day pass.
Yeah that is exactly my future too 😂 think I’ll need at least 2 (if not 3) days
Great informative video! Which nights are classed as peak nights in the pricing and also is it possible to get all mazes done without the fast pass?
It is possible to get all the mazes done without the fast track, I'd recommend selecting an early time slot to take a little time stress out of the evening. The event has now finished for 2024 so I'd recommend following the official socials of Doncaster Fear Factory for information on 2025 dates and prices.
@OutAndBackTravel Thank you 😊
Crackle Hill floored us! Some guy kept pestering us about his bloody eyes! Go to Specsavers mate! Such a good event, all 5 mazes are top class and we still recovering!
So glad it lived up to expectations based on my recommendation (the pressure sometimes .. phew) It’s such a great event hope it gets through planning to slay another year
Do you have a set time that you can be there? Or once you’re in can you spend as long as you’d like?
The park opens as 6:30pm with last entry by 9:30pm. When booking you will choose your date and half hour entry time, you must enter the park during your selected timeslot, but once inside you can stay as long as you want, until the park closes. You get a single go through each of the 5 haunted houses / scare mazes
It’s impressive how many innuendos can you fit into the first minute! 😅 Greay video, I hadn’t heard of Fear Factory before, Xtreme Scream is a lot closer so we tend to go there but might check it out!
You should go! It's great 😁
Thanks Jack, you’d be surprised how much I can cram into my tight slot, only got a brief amount of time to peak people’s interest in these videos I guess 🤷♂️
Not a bad tactic!
£15 for kmg aero space is a good price if you go to kmg and buy one it's 3 million pounds plus all showman who have rides have to pay for diesel to run the rides staff rent to the cancel tax to the government they have to pay to have it safety checked they have to pay for security if you own a funfair ride you never make a profit you always loose money it's a money pit
It’s a lot like the money pit of having a classic car .. only it’s 215ft tall
What a load of shite that statement is,showmen are some of the richest people in the UK,you never see a poor one, they run their sets on red diesel they pay hardly any road tax because it's showman haulage, yes they pay rents on the land they pull onto but to say they don't make money?? Are you joking!! Count how many riders are in each car, count how many car's there is what ride price is and work it out how much they are taking for each 2/3 minute ride cycle, then things again if they make anything or not. They wouldn't travel the country for nothing.
@@talking-sense I have worked at funfairs for 30 years if you think it's easy to have a funfair Ride and make lots of money good luck first you got to get a ride then you got to try and get in to the business they don't just let anyone join it's like a magic trick you see it packed lots of people spending money 80% of funfairs small local funfairs are dead no people bills still have to be paid
£15 for a KMG Booster ride (albeit a huge one) is taking the p*ss! Nice video though 😊
I know right?! It’s even more wounding when they flip the price from £15 to £10 as we were getting off 😥
It’s the only one in the uk it was 3 million pound and imagine how much money it costs to do a ride like that!
£15 per ride - 32 seats, cycle time of 3mins - so 20 dispatches an hour so easily capable of £9600 an hour - not a bad return on that £3m investment
@OutAndBackTravelmight not make that much at br day to day basis
Excellent video! Thanks very much for making this. I’ll stick to the fairground games to save money.
Ahh thanks ☺️ are you sure I can’t tempt you onto the 215ft tall one?!! Haha
7 waltzers & 6 dodgems set ,,,👍🏽not 10 as you stated
Thanks for the audit - appreciate the scientific result there. In my defence I’d been spun around all over the place maybe I had double vision at the time!
1:41 Stop right here, I don’t believ SeaWorld is the 10th best park in Orlando 🤣
I know right?! I can’t help but feel Hollywood Studios was robbed!!
Nah bro I think actually for the ones that we like fast rides I feel that seaworld is better than Hollywood
Just found you guys! Great video! Now subscribed. Aventura is my go to for HHN and OI meetups and I’m there 5 to 6 weekends plus occasional single week days per year. It’s perfect if you want a quiet and also small footprint stay, easy walk to VB and water taxis and the robot is so cool!
Ahh thanks for subscribing, glad you enjoyed the video Would love to do a OI meet up, sadly my annual visit from the UK is timed for HHN though! .. Hopefully one day I'll make it.
@@OutAndBackTravel If you ever get the chance the OI Christmas holidays are fabulous! HHN and holiday OI events are, for me, the best things Universal has to offer. And this year’s HHN was amazing! Have you gone yet? Great scare zones and houses. One house has ghouls on stilts with glowing faces. And they will chase you. It’s wonderful!
favorite ride?
.. The ride home? 🤣 honestly i’m not sure, it’s a bit like choosing a favourite printer paper as everything was a bit flat/meh Viper was a really positive surprise Always love a Batman so maybe between those
i agree with the other commenter. usually operations at GAm are really good. im sorry you had a subpar experience!
Thanks for your comment, hopefully ops are better next time I return
This is my home park. I’m sorry for your experience. Come back though when you get the chance. It’s a really good park on better operation days.
Thanks causaloak4577, it's good to know that the park usually operates better than our experience, I really want the Whizzer cred so will definately be back one day
Sounds like you had a proper six flags day 😅 overall the attractions do look great, shame about the ops. Also surprised about Maxx Force! Would’ve expected it to feel faster than Stealth considering the way Americans talk about it :D
Thanks Jack ☺️ Maxx Force was a total flop, Stealth dicks all over it tbh 😝
Hahahaha good to know :D Stealth did used to be my UK number 1 (before Hyperia) just because of how sick that launch is!
Thanks for the video, I was looking for some tips before going to the park
Zeus and Cyclops sound better than I expected, but I'm not too sure about Hades! Do you think it would benefit from steel track (the equivalent of Titan Track), or is the issue more the contours of the ride?
Thanks Graeme, Personally I would advocate any improvements to make it smoother, there is the issue that making it a fully steel coaster would remove the unique character of the ride, so maybe the engineered wood track systems, like gravity groups "vertical wood" or GCI's "Iron wood" would go a way to helping ... Although I guess dropping 170ft and then doing some flat turns is going to hurt whatever you do haha!
How come you decided to do Mt Olympus before SFGA even though SFGA was closer? :)
… Yeah wouldn’t advise this route 😝 probably should have continued north to Nickelodeon Universe and Valleyfair (if we had more days) Mt Olympus is the furthest North and West we are heading, we had 2 nights at SFGAm hotel booked to give flex of just doing 2 days at Six Flags if we weren’t feeling the drive up to Mt O, If we had been quicker at Mt Olympus and traffic kinder, we could have got back to SFGAm for last few hours of day - decided to have leisurely time / have a nice evening meal out and pool time instead. The next part of the trip we are heading south, so from Great America we will go down through Indiana .. probably should have put this in the video I guess 🤷♂️
Ahhh got ya! I guess Mt Olympus is worth the drive! Look forward to seeing how you got on at SFGAm in the next video :p
Very good video :) im going in 3 weeks for first time but only for 1 day ! Would you recommend getting a couple of fast tracks to fit all the rides in ?
Due to it's popularity Phantasialand is kind of busy all year around, pack the patience pants for queues and you should be able to do most of the park without the need to buy the fast pass, so its not essential. However if you can afford it, it can take the edge off things. One day isn't enough for Phantasialand and you'll definately get the bug to return! So I'm sure you'll be back sooner than you're expecting haha
@@OutAndBackTravel thank you for the advice I booked again for November to experience winterbaum at the same time I booked the September trip so your prediction is correct 🤣
@@Coastersurfer that's amazing news! I'm glad you enjoyed it so much, it's a really special park. Hopefully crowds should be lighter in September and the winter event is spectacular at night
Sorry one last question does phantasialand do photos on most rides as I've only seen pictures of people on winjas ? And if they do can you buy an unlimited package or deal like Alton towers ? Thank you 👍
I’m here now and it’s a fairly cold day in August 2024 and yet in the room it’s far too hot!!!…no air con and fans just blowing hot air…really want to leave and not stay another night & also WiFi is quite slow….apart from that lovely place but cannot recommend it…god knows what feels like when weather is like 27 & above…😢
Going on Sunday and this comment had me dreading it 😅
@@LaneyBoggs94 Sorry but just trying to warn people, recommend trying to swop to the Alton towers hotel in a moon room as it isn’t much more and we swopped to that (Air con too)for 2nd night and it was much much better!!..(only £25 upgrade charge & I jumped at it)… Edit: So how did you get on?, hope you got on better than we did 😊👍
Thanks for sharing your experience, that's a great price on the upgrade too! Def recommend Arctic Explorer / Moon voyagers for the Air Con in the summer as Splash Landings is like a sauna
I'm putting together a trip at the moment, can Holiday World and Kentucky Kingdom be done in one day? (cred run)... If you could only go to one of those parks which would you choose?
I would always choose holiday world, Important to remember Holiday World is in the Central Time Zone and Kentucky Kingdom is in Eastern Time Zone so you have to add an extra hour to go from KK to HW and subtract the other way around! (…My brain hurts!) Kentucky Kingdom in the past used to do ride rotations / things opening later in the day, might be worth checking they aren’t scheduled for say storm chaser to open after 1pm etc. on day you’re visiting But in theory to just do the creds it’s possible - to experience both parks properly I’d say you’d need a whole day. The water slides at Holiday World are incredible too, probably more airtime than the woodies! Good luck, let me know what you decide keep me updated with your trip, hope you have an incredible time
Glad you made it to my home park. I just wish TT2 was open for you. It lightens the lines for the other coasters.
Thanks for the comment, it was a shame but expected that TT2 would be down for our visit, hoping they get her up and running reliably for next season. I’ll be back to Ohio ..just epic universe will be taking all my money and vacation time for the foreseeable!
Welcome to the Steve is god club !!! Glad your finally a member, told you in 2018 it’s the best coaster in the world
I just can’t resist Timbers, Untamed, Gwazi, Wildcat … I love them all 😍
I think it’s such a great option when parks do evening only tickets! Shame that UK parks are rarely open past 5 😅
Thanks Jack, always appreciate the support ☺️ It def helps the American cred run when parks are open late and have the evening pass. Hersheypark allows all tickets 2 hours free the night before your visit - so you get a little preview/head start on the following day, always loved that idea.
Didn’t know that about Hersheypark! Good to know if I ever get to visit in the future :p
I’m going there next month. This will be very helpful
Have fun, hope you enjoy it! I'm glad you found this video helpful thanks ☺️
What day did you go? How were the quea’s?
@@mart1jin509 there was a change of plans so I’m going at the end of November
@@mart1jin509 we visited/this video was recorded on a Sunday over the Easter break back in April. Phantasialand is generally busy all the time / whenever you go really as it’s so popular and they do the low price tickets so you should expect some queue waits. Generally 30-60minutes for most rides.
Rode it 4 times already in the very back seat. Awesome ride.
It is incredible in the back row, for such a short train it gives incredible rides.
Waldameer looks like a really nice park. Ravine Flyer II is one of my most-watched POVs - great views of the lake.
Thanks Graeme it’s a cracking ride, a little on the intense side to re-ride. It really does use the terrain well
Thank you! So informative and helpful for our first upcoming trip. Would you walk or take the bus to parks? Do you need a resort mug for ice tea? Will my EVC scooter fit in the room you stayed at night to plug in to charge for next day? Thank you!
I’d personally take the bus, as a day in the parks are exhausting enough! But it’s nice to have the option to take the garden walk. The garden walk will safely cross over the road (Adventure Blvd) and from there you can access Sapphire Falls hotel which has water taxis to city walk too. Both the busses and water taxis are accessible for EVC Scooters. The suites have much more space than a standard room so there will be more room to park and charge your scooter. You can’t ask a British guy about iced tea come on! You know I only drink my tea hot haha! 🤣 The resort refill mug has Fuze iced teas on the coke freestyle machines in the bay liner diner. I believe there’s some kind of iced tea dispenser next to the coffee and hot chocolate ones too .. but I’m really not qualified in this area haha! Hope you have an amazing trip
@@OutAndBackTravel Thank you so much! Hoping to watch more videos! Love your response!
I really like the arctic room. Me and a two friends went to alton towers for the first time in 2023 they asked me what room we should stay in. I said the arctic room looks nice so we decided to stay in that room. We went to alton towers this year and stayed in the arctic room. We're planning on going alton towers next year and we'll be staying in the arctic room for the third time.
Great to hear, have you thought about trying a Moon Voyager room? they are the same price and offer a bit more privacy for three people?
@OutAndBackTravel just seen a video. It does look a nice room and like you said a bit more privacy. I'll show my friends and see what they think. Thanks for the suggestion 👍
@@_leon_7339 No worries, hope you have a great trip! Let me know how get on and which room type you go for
The tilt wasn’t working on Stormforce 10 when I last went :( also I’ve never seen the smoke machine working in the turnaround before the backwards drop 😭
oh no Aaron that's bad luck, though can't ever recall a smoke machine either. I also hope that the lake water didn't cause those much infection!
@@OutAndBackTravel there’s always been one in there, I’ve just never seen it used. Weird.
So cool to see people checking out my local theme park. Sucks that the park can’t really do much with its location and noise limit.
They aren't doing too bad with Outlaw 160ft up in the air! Hopefully you'll get some more custom/bespoke attractions like Bobcat and less Boomerang/Demon in the future 😄 It's a great local park, I didn't expect to find it so charming.
Sounds like you got on the main coasters. I was also really interested in the Dark Knight floorless when it was built - good choice of inversions for the size, I think.
Dark Knight is still running well (Day 14 spoilers!) its a "shockwave" sized coaster that (just under) 120ft scale perfectly adequate for pulling off some "big" manoeuvres. It would have been interesting to see if the layout would have been cloned to other parks, if Six Flags hadn't gone bankrupt at the time.
Looks like a very nice park, especially Comet and Wildcat. Arguably there was room for improvement with the motel, though.
Thanks Graeme, I appreciate the support as always! Wildcat & Comet are great, they could do with a Vekoma Space Warp scale looping coaster to replace Steamin' Demon and possibly a family boomerang .. and maybe an STC / Family Invert .. okay the whole vekoma catalogue 😂
Predator looks such a good layout. Glad to hear it's got some Titan track.
It's night and day riding between the two track styles, I kind of hope they don't carry on the re-tracking as it makes the experience hilarious going between the two styles! Thankfully there are no jolts to riders in the transitions, as the criticism from some of the partial re-tracks that have happened elsewhere
Number 11. It's fucking expensive Like fr they offer instalment tickets because its so expensive
Yeah it really has seen price increases in the years since I made this video, however at 199,00 zł for a standard 1 day ticket (£40 / €45) its comparatively priced against other European theme parks .. and they do have a LOT of rides.
Did you have to show ID for self check in ?
Yes we had to show our annual pass as we booked a “Merlin holiday club” rate - so guess the staff checked our identity that way - even though they are self service check in kiosks there are staff on hand to assist with the process (and check IDs etc)
Thank-you for the detailed tour. My family and I are staying in 3 weeks 😊
Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for the nice video, but one thing is not clear for me. If you are visiting the park with 2 people do you than both need to have purchased one speedy pass or can you buy one speedy pass and use it for both persons for all rides? So 1x speedy pass or 2x speedy pass needed with 2 people?
Thanks You have to buy the speedy pass per person, however it is managed by one lead on your group - so the leader will select the speedy pass ride for the entire group Hope that makes more sense?!
@@OutAndBackTravel Thanks!
