I am Camil Sofrag, I'm on a mission to turn everyday cars into something truly remarkable, luxurious, fast, utterly unique. Join me on my journey as I tackle the real-world challenges of building exceptional vehicles with limited resources. Along the way, I'll share my insights, techniques and insider tips aiming not only to entertain but also to inspire you to pick up a tool and create something amazing yourself. My biggest goal is to be an inspiration for others, something I never had when I first started working on cars. Together, let's prove to ourselves that anything is possible with hard work
DIY CAR PAINT JOB: Unconventional technique but stunning result
In this episode, my Toyota MR2 Roadster (Spyder) is finally getting a bold new color! But instead of using traditional automotive paint, I’m taking a huge risk and spraying it with urethane bedliner paint in a stunning Olive Green.
To make this DIY even more daring, I’m using a cheap, old HVLP gun to Raptor Line the entire car - right in my home garage!
But first, I’ll weld a metal patch to cover the antenna hole, share my go-to tips for sanding and filler application, and lay down acrylic filler and primer before moving to the final coats of paint.
No paint booth, no professional equipment - just passion, persistence, and a dream to transform my wreck into a supercar. Will the results be fantastic or a disaster? Let’s find out!
If you love DIY car builds, unique paint jobs, and turning wrecks into something epic, this is the video for you.

I have the same MR2 and I would never do that to my car, due to the lack of skill, liking it how it is and being unwilling to mutilate my baby like that. And still, I really like what you're doing with this project! I watched all of the videos and I really like your approach and I really enjoy seeing that light of excitement in your eyes, and your skills are impressive, I really wish you luck with this thing and looking forward to what comes out of it! Being mid-engined, it should have enough grip in mild offroad conditions (like FWD car driven backwards, which it kinda is), at least in the back haha. Also, I didn't know you could fit 13" rims, I thought less than 15" won't fit due to rotor sizes but somehow it does, very nice for winter setup
Welcome, don't get me wrong, I totally agree with you and I think that this is a car that is just brilliant even if it's left untouched. But on the other hand, I like to keep my self busy, plus I really believe that at the end this car will have a totally different feel to it. The 13" definitely fit diameter wise, but if you use steels you most probably will need spacers as they won't clear the caliper carrier, I think with alloys you'll have no problem.
@@CamilSofrag the car hasn't got scrapped and you've got an interesting project for yourself and us all to enjoy, and that's what matters
@@Agu_RaI'm so caught up with editing that I've forgot it landed on the side :))
@@CamilSofrag well, that's how mr2s are supposed to land 🤣 Happened to me as well, but it's been repaired since. Bolt-on quarter panels did also help with that, such a thoughtful design from Toyota, brings me pure joy seeing you easily swap yours in previous videos
@@Agu_Ra oh no, at least you got it fixed
I have been waiting for this for so long!! It came out soo good!
Yay! Thank you!
I didn’t think I would like it, but I do! I would consider using guide coat on spots you fill, like the antenna hole. It’s good you trust your hand to feel low spots, but guide coat makes it very clear.
Welcome, which part of the build you didn't think you would like? I do use guide coat but it depends on the surface, if it's a fairly big surface I can get away without the guide coat. The next video I think it will have a few shots how I use a guide coat. It will get a lot more interesting along the way And last, I'm glad that you like it, whatever it is you like :).
I may have missed it, but what was the reason for choosing to use bed liner on the body? I understand this approach on 4x4s due to the scratch and chip resistance, but not on a street car. Considering how much work you have invested into the body and bumpers so far, I was expecting an attempt to do a high-end finish in line with the hypercar goal. Was it a choice based on limited car painting experience?
Hi, that's a great question, it was a deliberate choice due to the cross country theme but more then that, I wanted a satin look and painted and not wrapped. Maybe the camera doesn't do justice, but I've sprayed it in such a way that it doesn't look like bedliner paint anymore and in my opinion it does look high-end, funny enough now Lamborghini actually has a similar colour on the Sterrato. When I'll have the car put back together, we can both make a better idea on how it looks like and if you have a really good point and I made the wrong choice.
@@CamilSofrag I hope it looks good in the light and you are happy with it, as i bet it would be a real pig to remove. I am also a fan of a satin finish, but its not an easy luster for the average person that doesn't have high end guns and spray booth.
@@NathanNostaw my setup is modest to say the least, and my tools not only that are very old, but they are the absolute cheapest as well, so I don't think I had any other option. I sprayed matte top coat many years ago and I remember I struggled with it. As for this car, for the moment I am loving it and I'll have my final thoughts when it's finished
@@CamilSofrag I once paid decent money for a matt finish on a motorbike. It was significantly more expensive than gloss. The clear coat goes down easier, is more forgiving and can be cut and polished when done it needed or desired. Matt clear coat is also a much more expensive paint. The experienced painter told me the highest end matt paint jobs are done in gloss and then hand cut back to an even matt finish with wet and dry paper. Hardly a quick or simple job, especially on a whole car.
@@NathanNostaw I never thought of getting a matte finish by sanding down but now that you've mentioned it I can totally see it done, maybe on a future project I can try this
just got caught up on all the episodes. really nice project and looking forward to seeing it completed. clicked the subscibed and liked
Welcome to the channel. Thank you for the support, it really helps :)
Great work till us all the grits you're useing thanks
Thank you, ok, I will try to detail a bit more in future videos.
This is my new fav build!
Welcome to the build !!
Love it!! Keep the content coming!
Thank you, working hard on the next one :)
Awesome!!!!!
Thanks!!
Amazing work!!! Are you planning make engine upgrades too?
Thank you, yes, I'm planning to supercharge it, therefor I will make a complete new intake and full exhaust, because I'm planning to improve the engine sound dramatically
@CamilSofrag Great I will wait to see it I love to see unique cars and special jobs like this one!!!!
Looks great!
Thanks! :)
Very very great Job!!! and Nice color
It looks so good! Always excited to see the next video.
So am I... after I finish an episode I'm like crossing a finish line :))
I like the idea of using raptor. Gives you a different effect and is durable. I think it looks very nice.
Thank you, Raptor is very durable, but I have to say, I don't know how durable is going to be now because I've reduced it a lot, but at least I love how it looks :)
You Should Guide coat with a bit of spray paint
I do that, even tough it didn't make it in this video. When I started to sand my first car and the guy that was teaching me told me to use a guide coat, I said ok, when he returned all the panels were completely black :)))
looks pretty good for the type of paint used
To be honest, I didn't know what to expect, especially because I had the paint for 3 years and got misplaced and stored in a green house, worst place ever. But it turned out really good
That color is looking awesome. Keep it up!
It's looking better & better with each upload. Glad to see you're following the makers motto: "Trust the process" Can't wait to see the wheels
I do have my moments of doubt and sometimes do small alterations. But if I'm excited about a project on paper, I try to stick with that, because probably it will turn out better than I've imagined
i think the good black really compliments the green and leaves a more premium look to it.
Right !? I love the green but if I don't bring accents, I think the car will look dull and cheap.
@CamilSofrag doing a great job man!
I love raptor for a campervan or more rugged vehicle not sure I'd do it on a sportscar but yours looks fantastic.
Well my idea was to have the exterior looking rough, but still stylish. It is Raptor but the texture is minimal, if it's still going to be durable, I have no idea, but it turned out how I wanted with the satin shine
Great episode. Cant wait for the next one.
I don't understand why you only have 2.5k subscribers.... You should be on way more! People don't know what they're missing. Great content, can't wait for the next video!
Thank you, I'm glad you like my videos. It's a new channel and for some reason YT is presenting my videos to a limited amount of people even tough my statistics are showing me great numbers, great numbers for YT. Because I got hacked a few years ago and I was unable to recover my social media I'm just hoping that people will like, subscribe and most importantly share. Eventually it will pick up, I am sure of it, or at least I hope so.
Paintjob and colour are fine. The prep work was a bit overkill. Can't wait for your headlight choices and mods.
I was really under pressure to get the car ready for the upcoming show and I was afraid that because of thinning the paint so much it's going to show imperfections. For the headlights I made a very weird choice, I'll see if it's going to be my final version or I'm going to change the plan a bit. More custom stuff are coming :)
To be honest, i wasn't a big fan of those bumpers when you started making them, but now when i see all the parts in one color, it looks really good. We'll done!!!!!
Thank you and welcome to the channel. I'm glad that I managed to change your opinion :)
@CamilSofrag As Chris from B is for build says you have to trust the process and the concept. 😄
@@victordinev5229 From my experience, it is always good to have a bit of doubt in everything I do, but this time I'm liking this :)
I was so excited when I got the notification you’d upload again Camil! 🎉 So good to see you and another great episode, the car is look awesome! 🚘
Thank you, I got a bit delayed but it's here now, I'm glad you've enjoyed it :)
Excellent!! And very different as well! You haven’t taken the same old road so many people go down to…
Even tough everybody gets inspiration from everywhere, I try not to copy but apply my own style, even tough it is maybe my 7th MR2 build, every single one was different...
@@CamilSofrag amazing!!
cant wait for it to be finished
There is still a long way to go, but we'll get there :)
Love the build so far, very unique! With the larger and heavier wheels, do you plan on doing any modifications to the engine? Maybe swapping it to a 2ZZ?
The overall wheel diameter is going to be exactly the same, I don't know if they are going to be heavier, but on all my projects I try to improve everything. I have the Yamaha 2ZZ on my white MR2, I'm planning to make a video about that one as well because it is a bit different. As for this one, I plan to supercharge it. I really want the supercharger whine
@@CamilSofrag oh wow, now I’m really keen on seeing how it turns out! Supercharger is a great decision!
@@AinioTH-cam I think so as well, it won't be straight forward but if everything goes well, it should be whining at the end
Please leave a comment and let me know what you think about the colour choice. Also if you could share this, it would help out a lot, thank you
Loving this project so far! Have specifically searched your channel twice this week to double check i didn't miss an upload 🙏
I was sick lately, just a cold, but a brave one, so I couldn't edit for a couple of days... But it's great to see that you're eager, the project will get better :)
I'm starting to like this 👌 i don't think those wheels will do it justice though.
Yeeees, come to the dark side, we have cookies :), In the next episode I'll do the wheels, let me know then what do you think :)
I painted my old MR2 with raptor! Same colour. I loved it. You're doing a better job than I did though. I did mine with a roller on the drive 😅
Cool, I was thinking about a roller as well but I thought that it might be easier to spray it, I wanted the paint to have just a bit of texture and to be honest when I saw it the next morning, it was a big relief, because just after I painted it I was panicking a bit :))
Why bother so much then? with old scratches if you paint it raptor! After all, the raptor was created for this purpose, to hide all the errors under its paint.
You're right, but I didn't know how it's going to cover since I had no experience with Raptor and also I reduced it 50% more than the maximum recommended by them. I didn't want to take any chances
Isn't the purpose of that bed liner to be wear resistant and hide the scratches over itself with texture. Yes, it hides imperfections under, but this is a byproduct of the thick paint. And why not make a perfect surface for paint? This is a good way to improve skills.
I’ve used Raptor. It doesn’t cover scratches as well as you might think. This was a good job. 👍
@@CurboroughSprinter Pfff, this is such a reassurance because, there were so many times when I was thinking that I am over doing the prepping, I even have it filmed somewhere but it didn't make it on the video. I just didn't wanted to take any chances so I just prepped like I always do
@CamilSofrag when it comes to painting any car prep is key and there is no such thing as too much prep
Loving the progress. Eagerly awaiting for the next part!
Coming soon!
Kewl color choice, i like it
Thank you, I can't wait to see it back together :)
Pro tip that has helped me continuing working on my project, is to clean up everything after a days work, so you start the next time with a clean environment. Got this tip from someone here on youtube, though I can't remember who it was. But man, does that help a lot mentally when you are eager to work on your car the next time. Sounds pretty logical, but I often just left a lot of tools etc in the work area, so I could find them quickly the next time, but it just creates chaos and a lot of headache. Keep it up - I like that you're creating something unique and for yourself. Don't let others dictate what the end result should be - this is YOUR car and what matters, is that you're happy with it.
Thank you for the tip, this is something that I usually try to do, but I must admit, when I am putting way to many hours, I tend to leave everything as they are and just go to rest. I'm glad that you're enjoying what I'm doing and it will get more interesting.
Keep up the good work!!!! Looking forward to the next episode!!
Thanks! Will do!
I haven’t been this excited about a new channel for a long time! Thank you Camil, I think we’re all looking forward to watching your great project, skills and content! 🔥
Welcome to the channel, I'm glad that you are enjoying this and thank you for the support :)
Yeah Dacia 1300!

Love what you are doing. Keep it up! MR2 ❤️
I will, it will be slightly different from a stock 2
Looking forward to seeing the car in colour … work so far is fantastic. Huge improvement in looks on the MR2 in my opinion.
Thank you, the next episode is going to be colorful :))
Mk1 Nissan Juke bumper?
Welcome to the channel, yes, the fecelift version
Bro take some rest to avoid burnout, but keep the great work going! It's all going to be worth it in the end!
Thank you, eventually I did burnout, but also I was working non stop and because I didn't post, I had no idea if someone is going to like what I am building or not. After I started to post and I have so many supporting messages, it really helps and I feel like you are pushing me to carry on which is great but because it is a lot of work and the majority is not in the garage but in front of the laptop. So thank you again for the support and yes the project is coming along really nice :)
@CamilSofrag great to hear that! You got great things ahead of you!!
nice content! Like the new front bumper, reminds me of a Porsche haha Please remake also the headlamps!
Thank you, I have a plan already for the lights as well, I don't know how it will turn out but it is going to be definitely very different :))
i just subbed, great job youre doing camil, cant wait for you to finish this amazing project :D
Welcome, thank you for the support, I am eager as well :)
Gotta say.. I'm pretty invested in this journey! 😁
Success !!! :)
The openings with the fins would be perfect for the exhaust
The exhaust will come out trough the central opening, but I am so excited about the exhaust that I'm going to build for this... The rear it is definitely going to get better and better in stages/layers, like an onion :)
