Hey, 1979 babies - believe it or not, it's time to schedule your colonoscopy. We agree, 45 isn't what it used to be. You're still young and hip! But colorectal cancer doesn't care. In fact, more people your age are being diagnosed with, and dying from, colorectal cancer. So do what the cool kids are doing, and get screened! #ColorectalCancerAwarenessMonth #45isthenew50

Thank you for bringing up this question. I was prescribed Zoltex and have been taking it intermittently as needed, with a good effect of 2 days after 40mg, and while taking it, I had no problems with acid reflux or stinging pain somewhere in my esophagus (always the same area, awfully painful). I was told to be taking it for a short period of time until the irritation, inflamation in my esophagus calms down, but it keeps on reocurring when I stop taking Zoltex (pantoprazol) (could be my fault as I take too much coffee!). I found a quick and efficient remedy: (at least) 5 almonds (cut in thin leaves in order not to break my teath!) or grated into powder. It really helps immediately. Is there an alternative to Zoltex without its side effects?

I can almost guarantee you if you lower or eliminate carbohydrate consumption your symptoms will go away. Many GPs do not even know this but probably 95% of GERD/reflux cases are simply due to carbohydrate consumption. From the time carbohydrates enter your mouth and are broken down by saliva, signals are sent to release hormones that are implicated in the relaxation of the LES (lower esophageal sphincter), and excessive laxity of this muscle is how this disease manifests itself in most people due to the acidic stomach contents being brought back up. When the carbohydrates enter your stomach, it further relaxes the LES as a result of insulin secretion and also delays gastric emptying which exacerbates the problem further. I would suggest trying a few meals of only meat, eggs etc without any carbohydrates or additional vegetables when off medication and observe the results over time. If that works, look into keto, carnivore, or a heavily animal-based diets (with non-starchy vegetables if you must). If you absolutely must eat carbohydrates, try and keep the amount low always eat them together with enough fat/protein and eat them last in the meal. 👍

For some people it's the only thing that helps prevent GI issues and even GI cancer. Wouldn't it be better to discuss the side effects that we do know about with long term PPI use?
