    I’ve been interested in Mercado Libre (MELI) stock for its strong presence in Latin America, especially in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. About a year ago, I explored emerging market investments, but didn’t feel confident about the companies I researched, and didn’t want to invest in an ETF. For Asia, I chose Alibaba (BABA), and for Latin America, I liked Mercado Libre due to its consistent growth and strong financials. Earlier this year, I invested, and it’s already up 20%. Many believe it’s still early in its growth. I’m also eyeing Coupang (CPNG) in Korea, though I’ve held off for now. Coupang became profitable in early 2022 and has been steadily increasing revenue since. While I already invest in Amazon, I like keeping some exposure to other e-commerce companies to stay connected with emerging markets. Have you considered Coupang?

    Nobody in the 1960+ cohort will reach full retirement age for a few more years. I suspect many more people will take early retirement among these than in the past. I'm planning on being employed until 68 anyway for pension reasons. My parents died in their 70s so I can only hope i won't do the same. I have a younger wife and she won't retire for a while so retiring for me is pointless if I'm sitting around while she works. (She enjoys her work and is well compensated). Anyway. We will just pile up money for our kids.

    • @MikeD_
      @MikeD_ 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      it's more complicated decision for married vs. single, or if there are children in either category. Part of the reason to work longer is for your wife if you're the higher earner. She's younger, so she will "inherit" your higher amount if you predecease her. You're providing additional protection for her the longer you delay collecting. On the flip side, many may decide to collect earlier as opposed to draining resources as they want more to leave to leave to their children. The math becomes a little trickier for a single person, who may be fine taking the lower amount as their financial decision is based solely on themselves. I don't have the answer myself. I'm retired at 65, but I've yet to take Social Security, yet I'm fully aware my father passed at 68, my mother at 72. Blended age is 70, and my older brother just passed at...you guessed it, 70!

    Matt, based on your top ten stock holdings I suspect that your stock portfolio is a relatively small percentage of your overall investment portfolio. In other words, you probably have investments in various ETFs and or mutual funds.,and the collective total dollar value of those far exceeds your individual stock portfolio. Would also suspect that the cornerstone of your investment portfolio is something like VOO or VTI.

    • @MattFrankelCFP

    If KNSL can keep growing at over 30% YoY for many years to come, then it is undervalued. My guess is that revenue growth will eventually slow down, margins will fall, and combined ratio will increase as they increase market share. If their business has some type of competitive advantage, then maybe they can maintain that growth. If I knew what that competitive advantage was and I agreed that would help them maintain long-term high growth, then I would buy shares right now.

  • @davidwysocki1004
    @davidwysocki1004 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Thanks, Matt, for an interesting presentation on KNSL. KNSL appears to be an exceptional insurer, BUT it also appears to be richly priced with a forward P/E of 28. And, for me, the dividend yield is just way too low.

  • @edgibbs3229
    @edgibbs3229 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Matt, Berkshire received an exception from regulators back in the 1960s that allowed Warren to invest a much higher percentage of the float in equities rather than safer bonds. Markel does not have this exception from regulators, and I suspect the same is true regarding Kinsale. Seriously doubt either one of them would receive approval even if they pursued it. Seems like a pipe dream to compare either company to Berkshire. A Morningstar analyst wrote an article awhile back that punched many holes in the idea that Markel is a mini Berkshire. This is a classic case of hope springs eternal and investors can become blinded. Seeing things how you want them to be prevents people from seeing things as they actually are in reality. That said, an extremely well run insurance businesses are very profitable. If Kinsale is able to maintain something even close to the combined ratio you mentioned then the company will be an exceptionally good investment.

      This is mostly correct. Insurance is a weird animal that isn't federally regulated, it's regulated on a state by state basis. BRK is required to have a certain amount available in each state and the rest gets to be invested as Nebraska allows, which is pretty permissive and why BRK keeps it's insurance domicile in Omaha for the parent insurance. The state insurance commissioners have varying degrees of permissive investment, but it also varies by type of insurance and duration. For instance, Life Insurers usually have terrible returns because they are multi decade guarantees and the risk of an insurance co going bust would wreak havoc, so almost all their money must be in risk free treasuries. If you write surety contracts on construction projects, that's a lot shorter duration and the parties are both business people who can do their own due diligence so they would give those insurance cos greater freedom.

    Hi Matt. I am with you on $KNSL. A lot to like about it: experianced management with skin in the game, low market share with a lot of room for growth, high ROIC, use of technology and database when assessing risk, focus on SMEs, etc. However there are some risks: high valuation and risk of natural or other disasters dependance of couple of key brokers, wrong risk assessment, etc. IMHO there are more postives then negatives. How do you look at the risk profile of this company?

    I, for one, am glad I purchased stock in Boston Omaha when I did. As someone who has only been investing for a few years, I needed to learn my lesson. Now I have two decisions to make. 1 - Do I cut my losses and simply exit my position, or do I risk waiting to see what the stock does? 2 - If I do wait, and the price finally raises, do I cut and run when the price breaks even, or do I let it ride? It will be fun to see what happens. And next time the same circumstances come along, I'll (hopefully) be a little wiser.

      I hear ya. I've been investing for 20 years and learned some lessons with this one. Honestly, the number one reason I'm not selling is that there's limited downside from here. Unlike some other types of businesses (like tech startups), Boston Omaha owns a lot of real assets and has no debt, so that creates some sort of price floor. For me, until the new management shows some actual growth and profit numbers, this is purely a valuation play for me at this point.

    I also used to follow $KIND quite closely but the app experience was very negative for me. So stopped following and their losses never had me convinced that they were getting anywhere. Maybe the new CEO can turn things around but I wonder in times of social media, how much energy do folks have to get on a new platform. Just wondering, do you use the platform Matt? If so, what benefits do you see as I always found the posts quite negative and non-appetizing for my psyche😃

      Thanks! I have a more thorough KIND video scheduled to post tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

    Wow BOC sounds like complete Sh**. I owned LMND for a while too, lost about 70% and then decided to harvest the loss about 6 months ago. I was expecting metromile to be huge for them and it's seemed to be worth nothing. Auto has gone nowhere. LMND really needs scale.

      100% agree the auto rollout has been disappointing. I don't get the slow pace of adding new states, since there is clearly demand.

    Thanks, Matt, for an interesting discussion on your losers. We all have had some but fortunately not many. My favorite insurance stocks are PRU and UNM which I bought back in 2020.

    I like lemonade, but I don't like Lemonade. The monthly chart shows a lower low and a lower high. The big up bar isn't convincing enough to buy for me, but it might be a sign of life. I'm staying on the sidelines on this one and use my money elsewhere.

      Thanks! I feel like it's important to hold myself accountable for losing investments, especially those that I've suggested to other people as great opportunities.
