Stoicism isn’t about making yourself valuable. Stoicism is about accepting your place in the grand scheme of nature and doing good. Stoicism is about attaining the four virtues; wisdom, temperance, courage and justice. Stoicism is about mastering the ego and recognizing what is and isn’t in your control. If you’re practicing stoicism to make yourself appear more valuable to others, to make yourself seem more virtuous without ACTING virtuously, then you’re practicing stoicism for the wrong reasons and the wrong way.

Here's the text of the video: Have you ever imagined a place where everything you desire becomes a reality? A space where your goals, dreams, and ambitions are not just possibilities but tangible realities? Well, you're in the right place. Today, we will unveil the secret that will enable you to achieve exactly that. It’s not magic or a trick, but a way of life - Stoicism. This philosophy emphasizes the importance of focusing on our actions, reactions, and thoughts, showing how doing so can change our reality and help us achieve incredible things. In this video, we will explore 15 Stoic principles that will guide you through this process. Each principle will be detailed and accompanied by a quote from a Stoic philosopher to highlight its essence. Relax and get ready to dive into the core of Stoicism. Before we continue, I’d like to ask you to like this video so it can reach more people. If you don’t want to miss anything on this channel, subscribe and turn on notifications. Let’s begin! Principle One: Ataraxia - Peace of Mind The first Stoic lesson on focusing inward is Ataraxia, a Greek term meaning tranquility or equanimity. Stoics believed that true happiness lies not in external pleasures or others' approval but in inner peace. Achieving Ataraxia means accepting the world as it is without wishing for circumstances to be different. It’s understanding that while we may not control external events, we can control our reactions to them. By freeing ourselves from expectations and embracing what life offers, we can find inner calm. The famous Stoic philosopher Epictetus said, "You are disturbed not by things, but by your opinions about them." This quote reminds us that our inner peace depends on our interpretations and reactions to events. Thus, Ataraxia is a crucial tool for focusing on oneself. By promoting inner tranquility, you free yourself from unnecessary worries and concentrate on the most important thing: your own growth and personal development. Principle Two: Amor Fati - Love of Fate The second Stoic wisdom is Amor Fati, which translates to "love of fate." This principle encourages us to accept and love everything life throws at us, be it joys or hardships. Instead of resisting difficulties or complaining about them, Stoics advise embracing them as an integral part of our journey. Amor Fati is the practice of seeing every event in our lives, even the most challenging ones, as necessary and beneficial for our development. It means recognizing that every situation, no matter how painful or difficult, has its purpose and can offer us valuable lessons. The Roman Emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius once said, "Accept whatever comes to you woven into the pattern of your destiny, for what could be more fitting for your needs?" This reflection calls us to view every problem as an opportunity to move forward and every setback as a necessary lesson. This viewpoint allows us to focus on personal growth without getting stuck in resistance or resentment. Principle Three: Prosochē - Mindfulness The third key Stoic idea is Prosochē, which translates to mindfulness. Stoics emphasize the importance of living in the present and focusing on our current actions and thoughts. Prosochē is the practice of immersing ourselves fully in each moment, observing our actions, thoughts, and emotions without judgment. Recognize that we have power only in the present moment, and we should focus on doing the right actions here and now. Epictetus, a distinguished Stoic philosopher, advised, "Do not wish for things to happen as you want them to happen. Rather, wish for things to happen as they happen, and you will be happy." This phrase reminds us that we should accept reality as it is and focus our attention on our own actions and reactions. Practicing Prosochē teaches us to live in the present and concentrate on what we can truly control: our actions and reactions. This approach to mindfulness will allow you to focus on yourself and your personal development instead of worrying about things beyond your control. Principle Four: Eudaimonia - Flourishing The fourth Stoic key idea is Eudaimonia, which translates to flourishing. Stoics believed that true happiness and fulfillment do not lie in pleasures or accumulating wealth, but in living a life full of virtue and meaning. Eudaimonia is understanding that our true happiness and satisfaction come from our own actions and character, not from external circumstances. Seneca, a well-known Stoic philosopher, expressed it this way: "It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, who is poor." This quote reminds us that our true wealth and happiness depend on our character and actions. Thus, Eudaimonia is a powerful tool for focusing on oneself. By striving for a good life through virtue and purpose, you can find long-term and meaningful satisfaction. Principle Five: Memento Mori - Remember Death The fifth Stoic key idea is Memento Mori, which translates to "remember you will die." This practice involves reflecting on our mortality, not to evoke fear but to motivate action. By realizing that our life is limited, we can appreciate every moment and live with greater purpose and intensity. The Stoic philosopher Epictetus advised, "Conduct yourself as if you were already dead. Now take what’s left and live it properly." This reflection urges us to see each day as a gift and live it to the fullest. By practicing Memento Mori, you learn to value every moment and live each day with intention and gratitude. This focus on oneself and personal development encourages you to live fully and not worry about aspects of life that are beyond your control. Principle Six: Enkrateia - Self-Control The sixth Stoic key idea is Enkrateia, which translates to self-control. Stoics deeply valued self-control as an essential element for leading a virtuous and fulfilling life. Enkrateia involves mastering our thoughts and emotions, the ability to resist temptations, and maintain calm in adverse situations. Stoics believed that self-control allows us to act according to our values and principles rather than being swayed by passions or external influences. Epictetus said, "Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants." This statement reminds us that true self-control is not about suppressing our desires but freeing ourselves from them. Practicing Enkrateia teaches you to manage your actions and emotions, allowing you to focus on yourself and your personal development. Principle Seven: Oikeiosis - Belonging The seventh Stoic key idea is Oikeiosis, which translates to a sense of belonging or affiliation. Stoics believed that we are all part of a larger community and have a responsibility for the well-being of others. Oikeiosis is the practice of recognizing our connection to other people and acting accordingly. It means understanding that our actions can affect those around us and beyond. Hierocles, a Stoic philosopher, proposed the model of concentric circles to represent affiliation, where the individual is at the center, followed by family, friends, community, humanity, and finally, the cosmos. This model illustrates that we are part of something greater and that our actions can have consequences beyond our own lives. Practicing Oikeiosis helps you learn to consider the impact of your actions on others and contribute to the well-being of your community. This perspective allows you to focus on your personal development while contributing to the general good.
Principle Eight: Philanthropia - Love for Humanity The eighth Stoic key idea is Philanthropia, or love for humanity. This foundational Stoic belief emphasizes the importance of kindness and generosity towards others. It’s the practice of acting with kindness and generosity without expecting anything in return and recognizing that we are all part of a single human community with a responsibility to care for and support each other. Seneca, a famous Stoic philosopher, said, "Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness." This quote reminds us that regardless of the circumstances, we always have the opportunity to act with kindness and generosity. By incorporating this practice into your life, you learn to act with benevolence, which allows you to focus on your personal development while contributing to the well-being of others. Principle Nine: Sophrosyne - Moderation The ninth Stoic key idea is Sophrosyne, which translates to moderation. Stoics valued the importance of living a balanced life and avoiding excesses. Sophrosyne is the practice of finding balance in all aspects of life, understanding that excess, whether in pleasures or hardships, can lead to unhappiness and suffering. Epictetus stated, "Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants." This quote reminds us that true wealth and happiness come from a life full of balance and moderation, not from accumulating possessions or pleasures. Practicing Sophrosyne teaches you to seek balance in your life and avoid excesses. This perspective will allow you to focus on yourself and your personal development. Principle Ten: Dichotomy of Control The tenth Stoic key idea is the Dichotomy of Control, which is about focusing on what is under our control and accepting what is not. This practice involves distinguishing between our actions and thoughts, which we can control, and external events, which are beyond our reach. Understanding that we cannot control what happens around us but can control how we react to it is fundamental knowledge. Epictetus said, "You are disturbed not by things, but by your opinions about them." This quote reminds us that our peace and happiness depend on how we interpret and react to events in life, not on the events themselves. By practicing this distinction, you learn to focus on what you can truly control and accept what is beyond your control. This perspective allows you to concentrate on yourself and your personal development. Principle Eleven: Premeditatio Malorum - Foreseeing Trouble The eleventh Stoic key idea includes the exercise of visualizing potential challenges or difficulties we may face in the future. This practice involves anticipating and mentally preparing for possible adversities. Seneca, a renowned Stoic philosopher, said, "A wise man always considers the possibility of misfortune and therefore is ready for it." This quote reminds us that true wisdom is not in expecting the best in everything but in being prepared for the worst. By practicing Premeditatio Malorum, you learn to anticipate and prepare for challenges, which allows you to maintain calm and resilience even in the most difficult situations. This perspective helps you focus on yourself and your personal development. Principle Twelve: Sympatheia - Universal Connection The twelfth Stoic key idea is Sympatheia, which emphasizes our connection to the universe. Stoics believed that we are all part of a greater whole and inextricably linked to the universe. This practice involves acknowledging our connection to the universe and acting accordingly, understanding that our actions have an impact beyond ourselves and that we should consider this impact when making decisions. Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher, wrote in his meditations, "What is not good for the beehive, cannot be good for the bees." This quote reminds us that we are part of a larger whole and that our actions can have significant consequences. Practicing Sympatheia helps you learn to consider the impact of your actions on the universe and contribute to the well-being of the universal community. This perspective will help you focus on yourself and your personal development while considering your role in a broader reality. Principle Thirteen: Arete - Excellence of Character The thirteenth Stoic key idea is Arete, which translates to excellence of character. Stoics believed that the goal of life is to develop a virtuous character and live in harmony with nature. Arete involves the practice of cultivating virtues and living in accordance with our deepest values, understanding that our true happiness and satisfaction come from our own actions and character, not from external circumstances. Epictetus taught, "Do not seek for things to happen the way you want them to. Rather, wish for things to happen as they do, and you will have a tranquil life." This quote reminds us that our peace and happiness depend on how we interpret and react to events in life, not on the events themselves. By practicing Arete, you learn to develop a virtuous character and live according to your values. This perspective will allow you to focus on yourself and your personal development, leading to long-term and genuine well-being. Principle Fourteen: Duty The fourteenth Stoic key idea is the concept of duty or moral responsibility towards oneself and others. This practice focuses on fulfilling our obligations and responsibilities not out of fear of consequences or coercion but because it is ethically right. It’s understanding that our actions have an impact on both ourselves and others and that we must act in accordance with our values and principles. Marcus Aurelius wrote in his meditations, "Do what nature demands of you." This quote reminds us that it is our duty to act in accordance with our nature and lead a virtuous life. By practicing duty, you learn to fulfill your responsibilities in harmony with your values and principles. This perspective will allow you to focus on yourself and your personal development while aligning your actions with what truly matters. Principle Fifteen: Logos - Universal Reason The fifteenth and final Stoic key idea is Logos, which translates to universal reason. Stoics believed that the universe is governed by an inner logic and that we should strive to live in harmony with this reason. Logos is the practice of seeking truth and wisdom through reason and logic, understanding that our actions and decisions should be guided by rationality rather than emotions or impulsive desires. Marcus Aurelius wrote, "Live according to nature, and you will be in harmony with the universal reason." This quote reminds us that we should strive to understand and live in harmony with universal reason. By practicing Logos, you learn to make rational decisions and live according to the universal reason. This perspective will help you focus on yourself and your personal development. This concludes our journey through the key Stoic ideas for focusing on oneself. Each of these ideas offers a unique perspective on how to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. From Ataraxia to Logos, these teachings remind us that we have the power to control our actions and reactions, live according to our values and principles, and find inner peace. Stoicism is not just an ancient philosophy but a practical guide for everyday life. By applying these key ideas in your life, you can find inner peace, live with purpose, and unlock your potential.
