Blackshack’s Bushcraft
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 มิ.ย. 2014
This channel goes with my Facebook page of the same name (link below) and will have videos of my hiking/bushwalking/camping trips etc.
I wanted to call both my channel and my Facebook page "Black Dog” Bushcraft due to my daily struggles with stress, anxiety & depression but the name was already taken on Facebook.
So why “Blackshack’sBushcraft” ? Australian humour. My surname is Whitehouse and when my family came to Australia from England in 1962, the landlord would see my mother collecting the newspaper from the front lawn every morning and say “G’day Mrs Blackshack, how ya goin’? (Hello, how are you going?) "Blackshack" stuck in my mind and so... here we are.

The Hinterland Great Walk | Flaxton Walker's Camp | Baxter Falls
An in depth look at Flaxton Walker's Camp. This was really a recon trip for a camp that Ralph of @GeoterricsOutdoorsAustralia and I had tentatively arranged, where Ralph had, at the time, expressed an interest in doing a hammock camp. With that in mind, I explored every campsite for suitable tree placement. It seemed silly not to walk down and investigate the falls while I was there. From my car to the falls and back was about 7km. It's only about 1.2km from the road to the camping area. A great spot if you don't want to walk too far to camp.

I always have two weeks off work in September but due to computer problems I got behind on my editing. Now that I have a new computer I can catch up. This is a solo trip I did in September 2023 where I stayed at the Ubajee Walker's Camp. It's one of a few campsites on the Hinterland Great Walk.

Following on from the Basket Swamp video is this short video of the two days I spent at Leslie Dam. Apologies for it being so short but I threw in a few photos to fill it a bit. This was more about relaxing than actually filming anything.

Just a brief video with a little footage of an overnight camp with @GeoterricsOutdoorsAustralia You can find a teaser for Ralph's video here; th-cam.com/video/wXEevNLjpOw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bWsUOjmCRfgQEcfI I intend going back there and doing a more in depth video on the area. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this offering.

With my computer being annoying as hell for the last couple of years and crashing frequently, I have finally arranged a new one. It's a custom build with a 3 year warranty, including freight charges for the pick up and return if needed. I couldn't afford to buy it outright so it's on layby. In the meantime, I was lucky enough that the computer behaved itself long enough to edit some more video....
Just a little cooking

A camping trip with Ralph from Geoterrics Outdoors Australia and his son Ty. In this episode, I cook (cremate) a Date and Walnut damper. A very simple recipe.

On a shakedown trip for the camping trailer I set up last week. Great to meet up with Ralph from @GeoterricsOutdoorsAustralia . Not as much filming done as we had hoped but we enjoyed ourselves. Keep an eye out for the full video. 😀
Rainy day gear tidy up.

At home on a rainy day I decided to empty out my backpacking/Bushcraft cupboard and have a tidy up.
New gear - no more mozzies?

I've been seeing this popping up in ads on Facebook and since I am a popular favourite with the mosquito population, I thought I would give this a go. I'll do a review on it after I've used it for a while.
A cooling dip.

After moving stuff around at home and going to collect a new (used) piece of furniture, it was so humid and we were so hot, we decided to investigate a nearby creek. I have had thoughts of doing a little stealth camp in the bush nearby and was surprised to see 3 people had set up camp right in the open where you first walk in. There are no signs to say that you can't do it, but I suspect you ar...

I like the sound of the rain 😊
Great video mate, thanks for the shout ou! It was a great time 😂
It was indeed. I definitely need to get back there and do some more in depth filming and also visit Bald Rock N.P.
Great video Stu
Thanks Ralph.
Nice video Stuart. Very relaxing to watch at the end of a hard days work.
@@idronefish thanks mate. You still on Fraser?
Enjoy your day
@@DaveCollierCamping Cheers mate. That particular day was pretty awesome.
Great video mate. Thank you for sharing!
@@onthefencefilm Thanks.
Take care

@@DaveCollierCamping Thanks Dave.
@ have a great day
Alton makes good gear but not cheap. Summer bag is small compared to Denali winter bag I have. I have a pathfinder canteen kit and it is quite heavy but well made, however for hiking I go titanium. At the end of the day, every extra kilo hurts. Good stuff.
@@michaelwaldeck7081 yeah, I have a -2 degree Denali for winter. Either way, I'm never zipped up inside them. I zip up about 40cm at the bottom, turn it 90 degrees and slip it over the end of the mattress. I also have a 5' x 7' reflective tarp underneath my bedding to bounce a little heat back at me.
Mate ya win some. Ya lose some. Think I remember you mentioning this trip back then. Its hard to find a half decent spot.
Love the "charring effect" mate Kingbrown is indeed proud Ralph haha.
Charring effect. 😂🤣 you should have seen the bottom. 😁
@@BlackshacksBushcraft 😂
Nice to see you. Looks good. Now I'm hungry.
@@DougShoeBushcraft g'day mate. Hope you are well. I have a new computer on order as my current computer keeps crashing. I have a backlog of footage to edit. Assuming I can find it all. 😂 If I can, there will be more content going up.
Great video mate - it tasted good too!!!
@@GeoterricsOutdoorsAustralia cheers mate.
Awesome
Hi mate, I’m originally from the UK and love my bushcraft and Hammock camping. I lived in Cairns for 8 years and recently moved to the Sunshine Coast. I’m wondering if you can help me find some good places to go where I can hammock camp and practice some bushcraft skills? Even find a few friends to do it with.
Sure mate. Pop onto my Facebook page and send me a pm and I'll give you my phone number and we can have a chin wag.
Indeed, I'm one of those people too!! Will sure be interested to see how it works in the long term. Awesome!

Are those granite rocks? Some of the creek looks like New Hampshire, USA. -in the summer, of course. Right now it's near zero degrees F and creeks are frozen over.
Hi Doug, pretty sure it's just sandstone mate but I'll endeavour to find out for sure. Most days here at the moment are 30 deg C and humid. You can just sit doing nothing and be dripping with sweat. The creek was refreshingly cool but certainly not as cold as I would have expected after the recent rainfalls we've had. Would you believe that this place was only 12 minutes from home and I never even knew it existed until I saw it mentioned on a local community Facebook page. I'm thinking it might be a good place for a little overnight stealth camp, but upstream a lot more and away from the people. We ended up leaving due to the amount of people that arrived. Love seeing kids have fun but we went there for the peace and quiet. 😀
@@BlackshacksBushcraft Sounds like a nice place to camp
Should probably not show your address on the internet mate
Not my address.
Woohoo Stu hope to see more soon
Hey mate have you slept on the mat? I'm looking to purchase but don't want to regret it
I find it just as comfortable as my sea to summit mat. My only criticism would be that it's not lined. They make a fitted sheet for it now but where do you stop? Ultralight plus ultralight plus ultralight etc etc how many ultralight items before you're back up to normal weight? Lol. As far as comfort goes though... No issues here.
cheer mate, very helpful, shame the wind and battery got the better of you 😛 good luck with he channel, subscribed ✌🏻
Thanks. Welcome to the channel 😀
Thanks mate - I'll email you!
I mentioned in the video that this was only about 15 minutes from home. Well, we've since moved house so now it's even closer. I may come here again after heavy rain and see what it's like. 😀
I've had this for so many years that I don't even remember where I got it from. I think I might make a sheath for it and carry it instead of my hatchet/tomahawk whatever you choose to call it. 😀
Hi Stuart. Good call on aborting the trip at artist's cascade if you were already tired. I have done the climb up to Wongai walkers camp twice, and it is much tougher than the walk to the cascades. The hike from Wongai to Tallowood and Tallowood to Sumners Falls is "Green Tunnel" stuff; you did not miss much! The distances cited on the Great Walk literature seem to underestimate things by 1-3km. Sumner Falls is stunning. I would go back there. I was in a rush to get back on the last day, so I never made it up Mount Allen. The scenery along this walk has changed since the flooding of Feb 2022. Camping in Aus means being raided by rats at night and having your gear chewed. Try some overnighters in D'Aguilar National Park. Lepidozaemia camp might be a good place to start. Happy hiking!
Thanks for your comment. I'll have a look at Dagiular.
Thanks for this. I’ve been getting a bit of Alton gear lately and I haven’t had any complaints with their stuff.
Yeah, it's pretty good. My collection is growing. 😁
Stunning nature impressions! That's really a beautiful place 🌲🤩🔥
And a surprisingly small area of bushland. 😀
This place looks so beautiful! 😍
It is. You wouldn't believe there were so many houses near by.
a very beautiful place for a vacation, hope you stay healthy and always enthusiastic, greetings my friend
Sorry to hear of your mothers passing mate.
Cheers mate. At least she's at peace now. 😀
Hey mate, how did the pad turn out? Comfortable? Compared with the thermarest?
*sea to summit sorry
Backyard Basics both about the same comfort level but the sea to summit has a felt/fleece or something liner. A recent trip I ended up wearing my thermals, not because it was cold, but because it was more comfortable to sleep on the Alton Goods nylon mattress. Not sure if that makes sense. 😀
Alton has a sheet to put on their mats now and it has a pocket for the pillow
@@Angelicwings1 Yeah but where do you stop? Ultralight + ultralight + ultralight etc.. sooner or later your load isn't so light afterall.
Great video mate Can't wait to go paddling there with you
Thanks for the review - very helpful - particularly with the direct comparison to the Sea2Summit brand one. I'm sorry to hear about your mother's passing, I hope that your grief has become easier with time.
I have recently purchased a Mountain Bike. It's been quite a while since I've ridden a bike but I'm thinking of bringing it back to this location so that I can cover more ground more quickly.
Awesome review

nice one mate, love the bird song in the background. Happy hiking to you
Many thanks for the visit Kate. Love your channel. Loved your interview video when you spoke with Ralph. Unfortunately the sound on my talk with Ralph was totally washed out by cicadas. Noisy little buggers. 🤣
@@BlackshacksBushcraft thanks. Oh no about the sound. Hope you get a chance to re do it. Happy hiking
Looks like a great spot Stuart - where do you go to access that track? Nice to chat today
Go past Nambour hospital and turn right into waterfall road. Cilento park is at the very end.
😊👌
Thank you. 😃
Beautiful nature, enjoy your walking tour, keep safe always.
Beautiful nature I enjoyed this so much 👍 Glad to see u here friend thanks for sharing With Us with my support 🥰 💓

Great video thanks mate
Hello from Oklahoma! Interesting terrain. Thank you for the video. Good Stuff!👍👍
Hi Double D. Plenty of little pockets of forests and gullys like that to be found around the place. Have a look at my video on the "Conondale Great Walk", there's some beauty to be seen there too.
What a beautiful place. Hanging a hammock would be tempting lol All the best. Clive.
It sure would Clive. Our friends showed us a video of those falls after some heavy rain. That little concrete bridge had at least 12" to 18" of water gushing over it, and the falls themselves were gushing. A lot of stormwater from streets higher up flow into it to feed it.
