'Spot' Lolo the spot-necked otter enjoying his enrichment on World Otter Day!
มุมมอง 596ปีที่แล้ว
Lolo the spot-necked otter is very playful and loves his food enrichment. The spot-necked otter can easily be distinguished from other species of African otter by their characteristic white markings and spots on their chin and neck. Like all otters, the spot-necked otter is brilliantly adapted for catching fish. It has a long streamlined body to help it swim fast. Its body is covered in a dense...

Have you been making the most of the BBQ weather with some kebabs? Our red-footed tortoises haven't missed out on the fun with their recent enrichment! Red-footed tortoises get their name from their red, orange or yellow scales which are visible on their legs, as well as their heads and tails. The shell is smooth and narrow to help the tortoise squeeze past trees and plants in tropical forests....
The animals at Belfast Zoo enjoyed their donated Christmas trees
มุมมอง 289ปีที่แล้ว
The zoo appealed for the public at the end of December to donate their festive firs as many of the animals at the zoo can enjoy them in different ways. The Gardening Team at the zoo had their hands full in January as they made their way through the hundreds of trees donated by the public. Keepers used the trees as part of the animals’ daily enrichment programme. Animals such as the elephants an...

Enrique and Priscita explore their new "Sloth Snug" - but they're taking things slowly!
มุมมอง 287ปีที่แล้ว
Enrique and Priscita our Linne's two-toed sloths have been "hanging out" in their new Sloth Snug in the Rainforest House! 😍 Sloths are the only mammal with hair that grows in the opposite direction than other animals. This allows rain water to run off the body when hanging upside down. The hair of the sloth is also unusual as it collects algae. The algae gives the sloth a greenish tint which he...

Our Chilean flamingos show off their colourful pink wings to impress!
มุมมอง 355ปีที่แล้ว
Did you know that male flamingos show off their moves and their bright wings to impress a mate? Our Chilean flamingos have been giving some impressive displays. The flamingo courtship ritual can be quite elaborate, sometimes described as a 'dance'. Part of this ritual is known as head flagging, when male flamingos group together and move their heads from side to side. They also show off with a ...
Our giant anteater is very curious about our trailcam!

Our giant anteater was investigating the trailcam with their long snout, but later that night, the trailcam had been forgotten! A giant anteater can measure up to two metres in length from snout to the tip of the tail. They can ...

Petunia and Onion our pancake tortoises open their Christmas gifts!

As you can tell from the 10p scale, they're very small. Petunia is three years old and Onion is only two years old. So tired of all the angry self proposed alpha male lion fan boys who needs a dose of their own medicine. Your calling out a supposed feminist by not even realizing how much hero worshipping and anthropomorphizing you're doing to an animal is laughable. Male lions are not some larger than life hero animal but instead beasts that do NOT dutifully protect their females and cubs more than further their own survival. They don't "save" females from r@pe but do that themselves. They are opportunistic, hunt, f*, fight, and eat whatever the heck they want because that's the key to self preservation and survival and that's all they care about. Male lions are like any other wild beast, opportunistic and self serving because that's how you survive in the wild. Even in coalitions lions have been known to turn and kill their own brothers out of adversity or a perceived threat. Cheetahs have been documented to do the same and tigers are more solitary but they do kill their own adult offspring due to territorial infighting. Does that make them evil? No they are simply doing what they feel they need to do to survive. Of course, in a posh setting like a zoo, the animal can retain their infant-like behavior and their bonds can last for a lifetime due to a lack of adversity. And as for female lions they have their own methods of self preservation and you can also say that females are self serving, however the burden of hunting, birthing, and raising cubs does fall squarely on their shoulders unless male lions suddenly grew teats and downs a cape buffalo every single week. A male lion making and sharing a kill with a pride is a rare event especially because they often patrol their territory and are out impregnating other females. Tiger males are also occasionally known to allow females and their young near their own kills but except for one exceptional father who raised his own cubs after the mother died, the duty of caring and raising the next generation falls squarely on the females. So lion bros stop fantasizing how amazing male lions are, accusing this caretaker as a feminist just because of her playful jab at men and get a life and move out of your Mama's basement because what she said is more rooted in fact than your fiction.

The lion enclosure is what I can remember the most from Belfast zoo, the big male, pacing back and forth constantly up and down the fenceline. It really did seem small, compared to other lion enclosures i've seen.

Male lions are essential to hunting Buffalo and other large prey. It's sad to see a zoo jump on the lazy male lions just sitting around waiting for food trope. It's very difficult for female lions even in groups to bring down buffalo just as it's very difficult for male lions to bring down small prey as they are not as agile as a females. Each have their role. But the lazy help with dumb male tropes so irresistible to people today, so ignorance persists even among those tasks to teach

the moment I realized she's a western woman, i knew she was going to take any chance she could find to start ragging on males. even when the male is a lion lmfaoo. they have a need to insult and undermine males any chance they can find, otherwise the world ends for them or something I guess. only explanation as to why they do it so much. the west is truly hilarious. how ridiculous that she claims to be a professional yet is this immature and spreads misinformation. male lions do A LOT to keep the pride stable and healthy, including risking their lives day to day to ward off intruding males.
