Winter POTA - Sam Parr State Park K-1020
I really like this radio, but I really dive much with GMRS. Must of the people I would be hiking with don't have a license. So I pass out MURS radios. I do have a ham and GMRS license.
The others can use any FRS radio. The channels are the same frequencies, but the FRS radios are limited to 2 watts max. The range would be impacted a little bit, but that's it.
I know this is a year old, but thanks for sharing from another 3rd gen enthusiast. Asking about the coax coil though. Wouldn't it be better if the coil was as close to the antenna as possible instead of near the radio?
Actually, when you install chokes for HF radios, it's best to put one at the antenna and at the radio. If you only have one choke, it's generally best to put it at the radio. In this instance, I don't think the coil is really acting like a choke, so whoever you can hide it works too.
Why do you think the wrist straps are junk? I always attach the wrist straps and use them when I carry the radio. I've never dropped a radio.
I cannot get it to work and I have my settings same as yours
Double check your com ports in device manager for the digi rig they may be different port numbers than what i showed on my laptop. Also, check your sound device settings, and check your baud rate setting on the radio. The baud rate on the radio and the baud rate of the com ports need to match.
Glad I found the long form video after watching the YT short yesterday. Thanks for the inspirations and suggestions via comments on the short. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the inspiration. Did you ever find ways to combine your love for the ham radio hobby with fitness, especially early on? I’m not ready for advanced hikes until I get weight off my knees.
I try to take a semi short walk of about a mile or so before activating a park. I do plan on adding more cycling into some of my activations, but for starters, just adding more physical activity in my day to day routine has helped the most. Diet plays the biggest role. Start with small changes like cutting soda, fast food, and carb heavy foods. Also, try not to eat close to bedtime. It's the small changes that add up to big changes in the long run.
@@k9empthank you for taking the time to respond! Great idea just taking an easy walk before an activation. Just being in nature and getting the movement is better than nothing, I can work up to the hikes!
Is this linked for each band?
Yes, it is. It works great, but I need to label the links because I sometimes forget which band each link is.
Yes, use of a motor vehicle in any way to support your SOTA station is against the rules, be it for shelter from the elements, connected to its power or attached antennas or for antenna support, makes this an invalid activation, if you had guyed your mast instead it would have been ok.
Can you drive your vehicle away with out destroying your set up ? Maybe not if your pole is connected to the car. Technically contrary to the rules of SOTA ok for POTA. Thanks for doing SOTA as well as parks. I have 4 drive on summits I visit and I take a star picket with me and belt that in to support my pole if nothing else to hook my pole on to keep separate from the vehicle. Regards vk5cz ..
If thats what sota is in your country im in. Here we would call that pota at the very best lol. Lucky boy. Here sota is you dont see your car for 2 days. ZL
That's just the state I'm in. If I go about 400 miles east or 500 plus miles west, there are real mountains. One of these days, I would like to go west and hike up a few.
Make sure to watch your cahones when tossing it up there granny style there, bud. You got pretty close to your boys.
Looks like a nice compact option
That's what I was going for. I noticed that there wasn't a good option out there for people with a g90, people that run qrp with a small amp, or people like me that run between 30 and 50 watts on a 100 watt rig to save battery.
Thank for this 73
The new DR-891 is made specifically for the 891. I just got mine in the mail yesterday. I can't wait to try it tomorrow.
I'd like to have one, but I can't justify the cost to get rid of one cable.
The extra battery does come with its own belt clip. I got the 2200mAh battery and it had its own.
My two Radioddity GM-30 radios came with the antenna preattached and unable to be removed, although there is the little tiniest hole at the base of the antenna that supposedly loosens it so it can be removed, but I don't have a screwdriver that damn tiny so it's as good as fixed to me. Yours seems to have arrived separate... does yours have that little tiny hole at the bottom of the antenna base, just with no screw in it? I feel like I got screwed if other people were able to get this radio with the antenna not preinstalled, or with it able to easily be removed. If that is the case... then WTF, Radioddity?
I checked mine and they have a small hole but no screw in it.
Don't forget the pcv valve☝️
Great video; I'm looking at trying the 1 Hour Challenge for fun soon and it's good to see different setups - and thanks for sharing the "failure". It's good to remember sometimes things are just against us and it's all part of the fun.
Hello, Thanks for your time. Can I use 14g magnet wire?
Yes, you can
Good video. What are the benefits of using the computer USB cable versus the green CAT cable that came with the Digirig?
I've only been able to get the cat control to work with usb cable on the 891. The green cat cable works just fine with my 818.
Now, how's it do for lightening crashes and power line noise
I haven't been able to test it for power line noise. Lightning crashes won't completely disappear, but they are quieter.
Uhhh...I believe we may have some misconceptions regarding the GM-30's ability to do extra channels. As with most CCJ (cheap Chinese junk) radios, I could not get the factory software into my ancient computer. Weeks after purchasing it I learned that RT Systems has software for the GM-30. Tried programming it tonight. Channels 1 through 22 and Repeater 1 thru 8 (I thought GMRS radios were supposed to have a standard numbering system that included 1-22 and Repeater 15 thru Repeater 22?), as I do with all of my radios, I set to encode only a 141.3 tone. Then I got to the DIY channels. What a catastrophe! The DIY channels are hardwired where you cannot change the frequencies, only the Name and PL/DPL codes. My radio/software screen looked a bit different than yours in that you would have DIY 1 being Simplex for 462.550, DIY 2 being 462.575/467.575 Repeater, DIY 3 being 462.600 Simplex, and so on, on an odd-even-odd-even pattern of Simplex and Repeater capability. The odd channels are incapable of Repeater use and the even channels are incapable of Simplex use. Frequencies cannot be changed. Whoever thought up this firmware pattern was definitely not the brightest knife on the tree. As far as the remaining 95 or whatever channels, they can only be programmed to receive. They have no transmit capability, even on GMRS. For me at least, this is a 100% deal killer as far as buying a Radioddity GM-30 goes. Just more CCJ.
Is it the HF POWER which affect in digital mode?
If you use the digital mode on the radio, it is. If you are just using ssb like what I was doing, it would be the ssb power.
Great Video, just getting into exactly these types of EFHW builds. So just to be clear, when you said you had the wrong size of ferrules and had to order new ones, in your opinion which is the best size ferrule for the 24awg wire, the 10awg or 8awg??
I used 10awg, and they worked perfectly.
Great thanks, hey I was just wondering if you ever use “wire insulators” at the end of your EFHW wires and if so what kind? I’m close to getting my general license and I want to start building portable antennas so I apologize if this is an obvious question, thanks for your time!!
That earpiece comes in handy while hunting in the woods. Others in your party can keep your conversation to a whisper.
Awesome Brother thank for the advice I usually use my opek vertical antenna for my activations I bought a throw weight from Amazon I will use my EFHW antenna next week for my activation take care Pota on ! 73’ Sal / KM4PPV
You should check out rugged radios 4Runner A pillar mount that uses the hood hinge bolts to secure, passenger or driver side. Ty for the video
I'll have to look at that.
I really enjoyed this video - i'd admire how you show everything really clearly. plenty of practical advice, i'm looking forward to going out with my EFHW and trying this technique to get it in the tree !
Thanks 👍👍
I don't think anyone wants to really know where you are. If anything, the app wants to know for marketing purposes. I know they can come find me if they want, & I don't care. They will be sorely disappointed. I'm not that important. Few are. Love the speaker idea.
Why do you need the digirig I run mine off the computer audio
Hi my name is Brandon with Black Swamp Club K8BSR. Can you tell me what editing software you are using? I really like the way you did your video! Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated.!
I'm using Adobe Premier Pro. It seems to be the easiest to use. It's not free, but it does work very well, and there's tons of youtube tutorials to teach you everything you need to know. There's other free editing software like DaVinci Resolve, but it has a steeper learning curve, and some of the advanced features have to be paid for. Just a word of warning if you don't have a higher end processor and graphics card in your pc, then the rendering times can be multiple hours. I run it on an MSI Creator laptop (around $1800), and the majority of my rending times are less than an hour for 4k videos.
I just worked at that site yesterday
I just activated there yesterday. We have some nice parks around

Hopefully, this got him interested enough to get his tech and general.

Would you possibly have a link to the 3D printed file? Great video!
I don't. It's something I threw together in Fusion 360.
Great WFD QRP activation! I did the solo set up last year in the WCF section. This year at a club site both years with a video. Great Channel content. 73
Great video! Looks like you had fun!
I did!
Excellent video Sir! I think you got excellent results with your FT-818!
Thank you very much!
Good day. What's the exact frequency that you used (40m - 61ft 6")?
I calculated based on a frequency of 7.100Mhz. Also, make sure to check the SWR on 15m when checking with an antenna analyzer. I'm typically fine with an SWR of anything below 1.5:1.
Thank you! Your video was very helpful.
I’ve got one and I love it. 73
Presumably the batteries are proprietary. So, if / when the battery dies, the radio is useless. I have seen some battery packs that can be disassembled so the AA size batteries inside can then be replaced.
The battery's are available for about 10 bucks I ordered an extra with my radio
The symbol rate is dead, long live Pactor 4!
They voted and passed it today!!!
You, and everyone else, need to look at the RF safe exposure calculators. GMRS max is 50 watts. That's a high gain antenna. That is almost surely an unsafe amount of RF 2 feet from your face. Might be ok for 4 watts of CB, but it SURE as shit isn't fine for 50 watts of GMRS or anything else. You are also screwing up the radiation pattern. The antenna should be on the roof, with metal between you and the RF, with you not in the radiation pattern, and with the pillars and roof not blocking your transmissions.
It's actually a 2m/440 radio. The rf exposure distance for 2m is 1.9 ft and 2.2 ft for 440. The antenna is roughly 3 ft + from me through the windshield. I'm aware that the middle of the roof is best, but I have other plans for a roof rack and still want to park in my garage. It still works just fine. I can hit repeaters 30 plus miles out without a problem.
@@k9emp in the FCC-defined "uncontrolled/general public" category: 146 mhz at 100 watts with a 2dbi antenna and you need about 3.4 feet of distance. 440 mhz at 100 watts and a 3dbi antenna and you need almost 3.2 feet. crank your ham radio up to 200 watts at 146 mhz and you need 4.8 feet. that's to be at the EDGE of safe minimum. aimed right at your FACE. people need to stop mounting their antennas on their hoods. your FACE bro.
It's a 50 watt radio. Nobody makes a 100 watt mobile 2m/440. The antenna is 3db on vhf and 6 db on uhf. There is also about a 1 to 1.25 db loss in the coax.
@@k9emp bro, 50 watts on the 2m band on a 3dbi antenna is still 2.7 feet minimum safe. just admit to yourself that that's not a healthy amount of RF aimed straight at your eyes. goddamn. 70cm at 50 watts and 6dbi is 3.15 feet. like absolute to the edge minimum. you think that's healthy? putting your face at the minimum edge? just admit it. it's a bad location for an antenna. even if to yourself.
@@j.b.708 who cares?
Good job. Keep up the good information. 73 Jeff N9NJN
Thanks, will do!
