    I can get 5 painted desert ram lambs. Can I keep them in the same pen for a few years just to see horn growth? They will be able to see and smell ewes. Not sure if that will make them really fight?

    • @fullcurltrophysheep2765
      @fullcurltrophysheep2765 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      younger rams always fight more, at first to figure out their pecking order. My rams often times are within 10 or 15 feet of the ewes, but I don't put them with a common fence where they can get closer. Also I don't put rams on either side of a common fence because they will fight through the fence.

      yes animal units, 1000 pounds, is the way to go when figuring pasture and how many animal units you can graze on an acre of ground. I like the 2% body weight when calculating how much hay you need.

      that depends where you are located, will you have pasture all year. In Nebraska I can only pasture 6 months of the year. I am only using 3 acres of my ground for pasture for 10 ewes.

    ❤❤VIDEO ❤❤GOOD MORNING ❤❤ is 4.9 is volts or amps.. im thinking it’s amps ❤when you take amperage it’s best to do it next to the charger ❤ it gets lower further away from charger❤it reads higher next to charger, that is why it’s referred as TOTAL AMPS ❤ also depending on how wet the grass is ❤higher the grass makes a connection to it raiseses the amperage ❤❤ therefore their is a amp rating on your charger device ❤if you don’t keep your grass off of wire it will be difficult to maintain or (DAMAGE) the charger.❤ You need a voltage meter it really doesn’t cost much ❤I would suggest a digital ❤because you can have higher amps because the voltage is low❤higher the voltage lower the amperage ❤❤7kv at 4amps❤3.5kv at 8amps❤ what’s a constant your distance of poly braid❤how long is total feet of your run causes voltage drop and raises your total amps back at your box❤❤

    "Avalanche" for the white ram.. Thank you for this video.. second year in with American black bellies for us. . Our first year didn't really go as we'd planned.. With the learning curve of a ram, boar, buck and bull on site... I'll let your imagination finish that story... We had two ram lambs born this year and our current yearling ram is much more docile than the first ram we had breaking thru fences to get to the other "boys".. I was curious as I'd like to keep one of the new lambs for future breedings as he's not related to the rest of the flock. So thank you very much for your information, experience and sharing your beautiful sheep..

      so you think you can graze the same amount of sheep on an acre in west Texas as east Texas, Colorado versus Alabama, or in my case western Nebraska versus eastern Nebraska. It's just not that simple, each part of the country is different, and in many cases each part of a state is different, so grazing rates will be different too.

    • @SgtSnausages
      @SgtSnausages หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hell each part of a single farm can be radically different. Ive got acres that would quite easily support 6 or 8 or 10. I've got acres that would struggle with 2 or 3. All inside the same perimeter fence on the same farm. I'm only on 9 acres and investigating a small handful of sheep. We only do tiny "personal plate sized" dinner animals at the moment (Muscovy, Rabbit, Chicken, Turkey, Goose) Our biggest Tom Turkeys don't hit 40 pounds. Sheep seem like a nice, do-able baby-step up.

    I just love your content. You just know how to speak and get to the heart of the issue. I have been remiss in getting the sheep vaccinated.... and you nailed it. I don't have ANY help, so it's easier to put it off than work them. Mine aren't hair sheep, but boy they've been pretending they are this year. 5 out of 7 are shedding big time. Last year one shed unexpectedly, and this year she got fly-struck so I had to literally pull her wool off (it was fixing to shed again) because I didn't have shears. Now that I have shears, I've been trying to figure out how I'm going to work them all. I have 12 lambs, 7 ewes, and 4 goats. All needing vaccination, and they all have horns except the goats that I got had been dehorned. With four-horned sheep, it's even harder to work them without getting injured. And as a 55 year old school teacher I don't really have the physique to wrangle sheep. I've been thinking about my set up, which was custom built for me and I'm glad I thought about it in advance. I have two big pastures (mixed pasture and forest) and then the paddock with my barn (which is about the size of your second to smallest catch pen, 12 by 16. Behind the barn I have a smaller area, and on one side of the barn are two narrow passageways. One is only about 18 inches, the other is about 3 feet. The 18 inches leads to a gate into the barn. But I've been thinking that if I get the girls into the narrow alley and funnel them into the barn, set up a lambing jug, I can squeeze each animal and vaccinate, and shear them. Anyway thanks for pinning down the source of my reluctance. Knowing WHY you do or don't do something is often the key to overcoming obstacles. OH, one other thing. I had to cull my ram at 18 month old. (Kept trying to kill me, and trying to kill his ewes, lambs, and others)... When I measured his horns, I followed your earlier video on that, but he's four horned so I doubt it was a valid measurement. He was a most impressive ram. His four horns totaled 108 inches.

    • @fullcurltrophysheep2765
      @fullcurltrophysheep2765 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With the 4 horn you measure the same as the 2 horn, and just measure the other 2 horns the same way. I do not know what total is needed on the 4 horn for gold star, if there is a gold star rating for 4 horn.

They took over the creep feeder instantly. I still have one potentially pregnant ewe-lamb born last April. I had to take out the ram so I know the potential final day she can lamb. (or at least, look like she's ready to burst). I have 6 ram lambs this year, so I'm looking forward to setting up a bachelor herd.

    I really appreciate the time you take to document your operation. While my Jacob sheep aren't quite the same, I feel like you understand what I have that I deal with having animals known particularly for their horns. Those black and white lambs are very flashy. That's the main difference between the Jacobs and these... you get color, mine are just like a little herd of dairy cows. I only have 7 ewes, and 5 have lambed. 1 still born, but 10 live lambs. Unfortunately I have a single due to the still birth and one set of triplets. The ram was removed so that the last lambs will be here by May 10th. Only one is a maybe, but she is the only ewe lamb that I held back. Poor thing. Her daddy was a mean old cuss, and he broke all four of her horns. I ended up putting him down. I measured his horns posthumously, and I realized that if I'd tried to sell him to a trophy ranch, they might have really made some capital off him. Between his four horns, following your measuring video (adapted to four horns) and the measure I got was 108. He was only 18 months old when I put him down. (He was a violent, mean cuss). Sorry, just sharing. :) Love the babies. Particularly the little brown-cow baby. :) My first-timers are lambing last. The first of three first-timers had twins, totally mismatched in size, the little girl is tiny enough to walk under her twin brother, who is small enough to walk under his mum. My camera wasn't rolling, but at one point I looked over and the big twin was standing directly under mom, head between her forelegs, and his twin sis was under him in the same exact posture. It was like those Russian Nesting Dolls. She was a 2022 baby and didn't lamb last year, and my other definitely-pregnant ewe is the same year. I thought she'd have one, but she's just getting huge and not having babies. Though I predicted she'd be an easter baby, so she might make me seem like I know what I'm doing. The other was born April 6th last year, and she's a wild one, won't let me near her, so I haven't been able to evaluate if she's pregnant. She's never been shornso her wool is much shaggier than the rest.
