Polymer clay pillow bead tutorial
This is a tutorial of me making polymer clay pillow beads using a kaleidoscope cane as the surface decoration. The pattern reminded me of crochet granny squares so I embraced this by adding texture to the final beads to emphasise the textile effect.

00:12 Backing clay
00:32 Cutting cane
01:22 Place cane slices on backing clay
02:20 Bevel each half bead
03:33 Join front and back of beads

05:48 Pierce and texture beads
11:03 Drill beads and finish
I previously shared a more meditative video of me making these beads without talking, I'd be interested to know which style of editing you prefer:

I find making polymer clay jewellery relaxing, so I have edited this footage of me making colourful stud earrings to include the sections that I find the most visually satisfying. There is no talking in this video, but instead there is relaxing music for stress relief. 00:00 Cutting circles 08:50 Pierce circles 10:14 Brush with mica 11:04 Cover stud post 11:45 Texture stud earrings Hopefully yo...
Did you know that that some polymer clay is UV reactive, but not all? This is what I found out.
มุมมอง 119ปีที่แล้ว
I recently discovered that some of the polymer clay in a batch of multi-coloured patchwork beads was more UV reactive than other polymer clay. I soon discovered this was because I had added Fimo Deco Gel to some inclusions while I was experimenting with ways to use up the waste dust created when I sand jewellery components. (Yes, I'm aiming for zero waste polymer clay! 😉) 00:00 Intro UV pen 00:...

Did you bake it after you finished?
Yes, I used polymer clay so it needs to be baked to harden. It’s a good idea to do a trial bake of the stick to check that it doesn’t have too much sap before you begin decorating.
Brilliant - thank you!
You're very welcome! ☺️
Where do you get the adapter?
I bought mine online but it was years ago so unfortunately I can't remember exactly where. I have a Makins extruder, so I got the adaptors to match that. You should be able to find them with a google search e.g. Makin's Claycore Extruder Adapters.
I love this!! Wow, where can I find a pipette?
Good question! I think I got mine years ago in a paint marbling kit.
@@Fulgorine One more question, are you applying the mica mix to baked or unbaked clay?
I use it on unbaked clay because it sticks better. I use mica powder that includes binder and because it’s in the dents it doesn’t rub off after it’s baked. You could probably apply it to baked clay but you may need to protect it (e.g. with varnish).
Very involved. Thanks for sharing your process. 😊 They look very interesting. 😊
That was me trying to make simple beads 😁
Very, very nice. I enjoyed the silence. Lovely beads.
Thanks for letting me know! Editing this way is an experiment for me, so I'm glad to hear you like it.
I have found these extenders near impossible to use even with very soft and conditioned clay. I just roll my own with a centered wire and cut them.
I think it's easier to get smoother results that way. I think extruders can be useful if you want a particular profile (like a semi circle) that would not be easy to roll.
I wonder if cold porcelain would work. I'd like to have your advice. Here in Argentina, the price of polymer clay is about 7 times the price of cold porcelain.
I've never used cold porcelain so unfortunately I can't really advise. I think joining different materials such as sticks and crystals may have problems with cracking if the cold porcelain shrinks as it dries. Perhaps you could try with a smaller piece to see if it works?
What about baking temp and time? I baked mine at 275 for over 2 hours and they are still not hard.
Your baking temperature is going to depend on the brand of clay you used, so you need to check the information from the manufacturer. Baking time is determined by the thickness of the clay you've used. For beads of this thickness 30 minutes should be sufficient. Do you have a separate thermometer inside your oven to confirm that this temperature is being reached (not just what your thermostat is set to)? When you say not hard do you mean still squishy or still flexible? If you used plasticine instead of polymer clay it will never harden. The rigidity of the baked polymer clay depends on the brand you have used. I like Fimo Professional which has a nice balance between baking strong but still keeping a little flex. If your "baked" polymer clay is brittle or cracks easily it probably has not reached the required temperature. I usually pack my oven cold, heat it up to the required temperature (based on thermometer inside oven not oven setting), time for 30 minutes and then turn the oven off and leave the items in the oven until it cools. I also place my polymer on a ceramic tile inside the oven (not directly on the wire or metal tray) to help even out the temperature.
It would've been so much nicer if you had put actual gemstones on it.
I made this as a stocking filler for my child so gemstones are a bit out of my budget!
What mm is your copper wire?
I think most of my wire is 0.9mm
Beautiful!
Thank you!
I like your work I think it's you know it's really funny I've been working for with clay for 30 years and I never thought about putting a slit in the clay where the wires going to be so I learned something today I love watching these videos for inspiration and thank you for talking to your audience and not just having some random music on
Glad you found something useful 😊
Can you also add alternative methods for those who don’t have tools like extruder and other pro things? 😅
You could do something similar by making a bullseye cane and reducing that although you won’t get the random colour variations unless you make the cane with gradients inside.
Awesome!!! Thanks so much.
Thanks for watching 😊
I have this extruder which I haven't been fond of using. I might try again. Wish it came with the right side circle cutter to cut out the clay for the chamber.
It gets so squished it's extruded I don't think the cutter needs to be exact.
If you condition and soften the clay up first, it just glides out so much easier and wont hurt you so much.
Thanks. I think it's also brand specific i.e. if working with a stiffer clay like I do, it doesn't matter how conditioned it is.
It turns in to amethyst
Oh shit by Crystal crazies😂
Hi, just a tip for re-warming cane slices is to wet a face cloth with hot water, fold over, & place them inside. Only takes a few minutes to warm up, dry off and they should be pliable ❤🇦🇺
Thanks. That's a great tip. I have lots of old clay I could try this on.
You’re welcome ☺️
So how do you use them? Do you make a stopper bead?
They are intended to use on dreadlocks so you need the correct size for the hair. Pull the hair through until there is enough to hold it in place.
This was very helpful. Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for sharing‼️🇨🇦 I LOVE working with Polymer Clay. Take care & until the next video.🤗🙏🏻🌻
Glad you enjoyed it :)
I have watched hundreds of these videos and yours in by far the best! It's excactlt what I wanted. Thank you! ❤️
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad it helped.
That's lovely! Looks like ceramic to me.
You are right. Polymer clay can mimic many things.
For this video I used a stick that I found on the ground which had been blown down in a storm. If you are using new materials in a polymer clay project it’s a good idea to test how they will react in the oven. I was not worried about the stick igniting at 120 degrees C, but with certain woods you may get sap bubbling out. It’s best to do a test bake before you have spent time working on you polymer embellishments.
How long did you bake it for?

Wonderful, keep ‘em coming! I enjoy tutorials like this with my morning coffee 😍👏🏻👏🏻
Great to hear it. Thanks.
Good video
Thanks. :)
Bonjour il faut les mettre au four combien de temps ?
It depends on your brand of clay. Check the instructions on the wrapper. Also make sure you have the correct temperature.
Awesome tip! Thank you!
Happy to help.
Loved this video
Thank you :)
Brava! Ho imparato una cosa nuova, grazie. Great, I learnt somthing new!!
Glad to hear it :)
Thank you. Im not a polymer clay user, but watching how you reduce and reduce the cane seems to remind me of infinity going inwards and not outwards, the tiniest portion being a reflection of the whole even though through reduction, it "looks" different it is still the same. Oh well, just my thought. Enjoyed the video.
It's all in your point of view I suppose.
Nice work but I think the stick is too big
Yes I think you are right. I had to do some stringing gymnastics to use them.
@@Fulgorine 🙏❤️💐
I throughly enjoyed your video.
Glad to hear it. Thanks
Just a tip: it comes out cracked because it's not conditioned. Great video!!! 🤩
It cracks no matter how conditioned the clay is. Maybe a softer brand would make a difference?
Fantastic cutting tip!
Glad you liked it :)
Ooo, what fun. So dextrous. Loved the music! Pretty earrings too....
Glad you enjoyed!
Enjoyed this. I could hear you thinking! The shavings are very interesting. Looking forward to watching what you do with them.
