Wonderful to see this historical footage of a powerful performance.
Here's something to think about ... What are your strikes striking, what are your blocks blocking? Remember, in kata, you should mirror your own body, not some giant or midget. Kata is not theater. For instance, I see many/most practitioners today do those double shutos to sides way up high as in chest, neck, head or just up in the air. Those shutos should be low, to the floating ribs. Another for instance, those double punches to the face with the handles in this kata ... Those punches should come together at a point to the face or neck, not to either side of the face or neck. Think about what you're striking or blocking and exactly where you're striking or blocking.
Very, very nice!
Exelente
C’est la forme la plus proche de Sepaï, Me Toguchi la appris ainsi de Chõjun Miyagi.
Excellent kata! She is worthy of first place...
The lady did well...forget the nit picking?
Great representative of Both of our styles....
Critical commentators should also consider that at the time of competition "Real" Bo were used in competition, not the Super Lightweight Bo used in the present. A Great Performance. Oneigashimasu.
*LOOOOOOOOL!!!* *Better not throw fake Japanese in here if you have no idea how to use it!!!*
No one can accuse Ms. Loukopoulos of NOT using her hips as is so common in most bo kata performances. I believe that she trains in the Yamanni-ryu school.
Except that's a sai kata.
Domo Arigato Kathy, Sensei Good performance of Seipai. Upon reading some of the comments recognized you My name Franklin Puello, One of Cleve's partners
'Too stiff'? It's not right. People, who saw only Yamanni-ryu and trust only Yamanni-ryu told that. Katherine has great strength, speed, dynamics. Judges of World Tournament were right. But Yamanni - NOT 'one and only true kobudo'. Technical advices so fun ;) Yes, Inoe-ha uses shomen-uche from above the head. Probably, it's after kenjutsu etc influence. Other okinawan kobudo school use from above sholder. And it's more realistic from human body composition.
I'm a Yamanni Black Belt and I think her kata is very good.
I see botom´s dog, but this is´n important, because i see so a beatiful woman doing a beautiful kata. Saludos and kisses
Love it well done 5 stars
Excellent performance by this highly regarded practitioner and teacher. Thanks for posting.
She is stiff and robotic, her Passai is good, at least it was a decade or two ago. As far as her being a sensei, I don't call anyone sensei, unless they can apply the technique. Teaching technique is an imposters game, the ability to use your techniques against unexpected attack in a real environment is the real test, a test that about 95% of karate blackbelts never realized.. Know a technician and know a fighter.
This is a top clean and sober interpretation of a Ryukyu Kobudo Kata. Undifferentiated comparisons with Yamanni-ryu just show ignorance and lack of appreciation. Johann-Sebastian Bach is played traditional by many. Yngwie Malmsteen, on the other hand, plays it way cooler, but not more traditional. You're shanghai-ing of "Classic Okinawan Kobudo" in Yamanni's favour is a fallacy of logic.
Hi Katherine Sensei, I am one of Sensei James students, from Brooklyn. Good to catch you on youtube. I really like your Kata's there is total dedication to every move.
I'm not refering just this video... In many videos Yamani Ryu guys commented in that way.. In what sense, this is not a Classic Okinawan Kobudo at its best? Yamani Ryu is another tradition... But, u telling Taira > Akamne Kobudo or Matayoshi Kobudo is not Classic Okinawan Kobudo at its best? But, I too love to see Yamani Ryu... Orange juice and apple juice are not same..
I think practiconers of Yamani Ryu are insulting their own teachers by saying, 'this is not good, watch Nishime or Oshiro Sensei for real kobudo'.. Oshiro and Nishime sensei is very good. But, people must know the difference between Yamani Ryu's fluidity and other kobudo styles. Just commenting without knowledge is showing their stupidness only.. U mean Akamine or Matayoshi Kobudo is not good? Katherine Sensei may be little stiff.. But she has not to be fluid like Yamani Ryu at her school. tq
Katherine Sensei, Your kobudo kata (bo) in 1997 world tournament is much much better than this Seipai) Warm regards..
Katherine Sensei, this may be an old footage, but looking good as usual! You may remember me... Traveling from NC, USA in February 1996. You were the 'excellence' in introducing me into the Jundokan. Keep up the spirit of Karate-do! ...Karl
Wow! Classic Chatanyara no Sai - RKKHSK! Madam beautiful, gracefull, excellent projection and power, loved the concious use of the Me and the excellent coordination of the hip action for thrust and power. Beautiful tshiko dachi... thanks for the video! Yours in Budo from Asia.
I see your point in regards to Tournaments however your original comment "Classic Okinawan Kobudo at it's best" does not describe this kata. For modern tournaments..bravo. For true classical Okinawan Kobudo, Nishime Sensei and Oshiro Toshihiro Sensei have the best Okinawan BO technique I have EVER witnessed. Both have videos on youtube last time I checked..take a look for a true glimpse of speed, fluidity, and power.

This is not classic Okinawan Kobudo at its best...watch Oshiro Toshihiro doing Shirataru on youtube...this is pretty much second rate as far as I'm concerned
watch Oshiro Toshihiro and then talk to me about stiffness.
very primitive.
Congratulations! A well-earned win!!
Beautiful! You inspire me to begin sai kata!!
The video and audio are not in sync. It seems to be on gedan barai but it is not.
very good
NO, you are too stiff in your brain
hello Katherine, congratulations on a well performed kata, also watched your bo (kon ) kata excellant Although i train in a completely different style, ( Yamani Ryu ) i can appreciate class. Domo Arigato
Hello, I am a late comer. I owe gratitude for my appearance on the net to my colleague Mr. Theo Theloesen (SE-FI) from Holland. Smile, katherine
Hello! I am Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu and Goju Ryu Karate Do practitioner. I have Rokudan In Shorin Ryu and Godan in Gojuryu... lived on Okinawa for 14 consecutive years and felt it was time to live and to work on other countries as well... I regret to say, I have never been in Hawaii... Smile, Katherine
Hello! This video was taken in April, 1993, on a mountain side of Australia after I finished teaching and was having fun. It was PAL SECAM and when transformed into NTSC it came as black and white. I am 55 years old... not quite 60 yet, but almost... smile... Katherine
Katherine may look a bit "stiff" to some, but let me assure you, she is a dedicated and very solid karate-ka. She has good power and knows here stuff.
Amazing!!
too stiff
Actually she was Matsubayashi ryu, but was kicked out of the HQ dojo in Okinawa or quit or both. I hear she was KO'd in Hawaii. She joined Goju ryu and got 6th dan very quick. I wonder how?? The video isn't that old, it's in Black and White to look that way.
good zanshin
wow, outstanding - super hip action in conjunction with stance lock and weapon technique.
Wonderful.. Thnks for posting :)
Sakugawa No Kon by Loukopoulos Sensei is much much better than this.. I think this is very old video.. But, in 1997 Sakugawa No Kon a great improvement compared to this video.. Gambatte Kudasai Loukopoulos Sensei :)
Wonderful.. Fantastic... Excellent... Deep bow to Loukopoulos Sensei :)
Hi, Katherine. How are you? Nice to see your stuff on the net. Send me a msg.
