And question when you replace hammer leather do you soak it in water or anything
Hi, No I just trim and screw into socket. Jim
@@JRCLOCKER thank you very much and what kind of leather do you use?
Hi Mr jim
Fantastic demonstration you make it look easy i have a Question please i have 5 grandfather clocks all working one of them i have a problem in pulling up are winding the center weight it doesn't hold its wind weight i have take weight off hold da chain and kinda pull bit fast to get it hold then i puts back weight while holding tension on chain ....is there something worn-out i need replacing other that it's chiming away keeping perfect timing much appreciated great video thanks 😀👍
On my pillar and scroll woodwork clock I can't tell which weight goes on time and which goes on the strike. One is bigger than the other. Any idea?
my grandmother clock the pendulum will not continue to work
Just wondering what my clock on and off stopping after service ?
Thank you for sharing❤
Lol Jim you got cut off there
I had a very bad experience my first time using one of these, and needed 3 hands. The "clamp" on mine barely grips the wheel. I don't have a nice winder yet, but I learned my lesson that first time and now I only use this thing when it is locked into a vise, so that I have two hands free to deal with any issues that arise.
Wow that’s packed with dirt must have been exposed to the air
Nice
Acetone (nail polish remover) will remove that reside easily.
Why don't you use the Bergeon bushing cutters to trim down proud bushings?
I like using that brand of gel super glue too.
Hi again Mr Jim
love the videos keep it up very helpful
Any idea where one can get ahold of a piece of this foam? I have been wondering how to keep track if the wheels as I bush, example, if I know I need to bush the back of time side third wheel, I need to keep track of exactly which pivot that is so I make sure I measure/fit the proper pivot to the bush. And I've been confused as to how I can keep track being new, where I don't always remember which wheel is the third wheel.
I found out it is called polyethylene foam, used for packing and creating foam fitted storage cases for things, and was able to order a piece on Amazon.
Thanks Jim, really appreciate your videos.
Very informative video. I am working on the same movement from my 1905 black mantel clock. I am seeing a problem with my power spring for running the clock(...have not disassembled the movement yet....) Got movement running pretty good for a 24 hour period. Movement stopped & I could not get it to run for the last 2 days. Finally spotted what I believe to be the problem......the power spring when wound goes "off center" to the right.....when power is releasing the spring expands toward the top & eventually contacts the lantern gear above it stopping movement. In looking at both power springs; the one on the right is more centered but also seems to have a "guide pin" to stop spring from expanding up & interfering with any gears above...... There is no "guide pin" on the left spring....Seems if I were to add one it would keep power spring away from the lantern gear....... Is this a possible fix to prevent expansion upwards, keeping "lantern gear" from this obstruction ??
Hi Mr jim
I got stuck in 3:20, which is a part in which you mention that there are latches that fit into the grooves to hold the dial. Yet, you did not show how you took it out. From the easiness with which you took them out it seems to be quite straight forward to do. Yet. I am stuck on that part. I even took the dial / movement block out of the cabinet and tried to take the latches out of the grooves. They look like small black toothpicks that would be easy to pull off from the grooves. Yet, all four in my clock are stuck. I tried to pull with pliers to no avail. Either I am missing something very basic or my latches are different (you did not show it in the video). It might be that they are corroded. Any ideas / suggestions on how to remove these latches? Is there anything I must press and/or pull to remove it? BTW, this video is more than 3 years old and still helps a lot of people. Thank you very much for doing it!!
Really enjoyed watching this thank you. I have just been given a unicorn clock with the same movement. Mine was made in 62. Thanks Mark
Hi there - saw your TH-cam video on repairing clocks. I have a Hermle clock that needs repaired or clock mechanics replaced. The very top spring tiny thin wire is hanging out - unsure about anything else. Can you help and possibly how much or do you have a replacement for sale? Thank you kindly sir! Tried sending on eBay but it blocked it for some reason. So sent couple three separately there.
Wow liked this , searched in google about floating balance , got this really awesome 😮. Hope you also post videos on how to repair or oil up automatic or mechanical watches wrist watches .
So beautiful great work!! 😊
You make that winder seem so benign :-) I have a video of a 31 day mainspring getting away from me on one of those winders. Needless to say I now have an Ollie Baker style winder - much cheaper than a trip to Urgent Care. Thanks for the video - it was helpful to see how that winder is supposed to behave.
These hand held ones are dangerous
Is this the same for a musical one too
Thanks so much. I have not been able to regulate my Elgin Mantle clock (with a Hermle movement). I have been stumped by the + - sign but no visible adjustment screw. Your video had just the info that I needed. Thanks
Danke! 😃🤩🙃 endlich habe richtige video gefunden 👍 like 88
Thank you! I inherited a Sligh clock that I believe was made in the 1990s. Have been researching how I can get the mechanism out to oil it effectively since I am unsure how long it has been (though I do know my sister had it serviced). In any case, having watched your "other" video, I could not get what I learned to line up with what I see on this clock. This video seems to line up nicely in that my clock has the four screws on the face as you demonstrated. I kept anaylyzing trying to figure out what would happen if I removed them, but could not see the solution. This video seems to have solved the mystery for me. At least now I feel like I can give it a whirl to get the mechanism out for oiling (which I have researched studiously).
Mission accomplished! I removed the door that covers the clock face first by removing screws from the hinge. I was able to remove the mechanism still attached to my clock's saddle mounting board without removing screws that held the mechanism through the board where the cables pass through. My board goes fully from side to side near the access doors and was not the roughly 12 inches as in the video. After removing the 4 screws and the mask board, I was able to lift the board to clear the hold-down bolts, tilt the clock face out the opening, and then lift the works out at about a 45 degree angle toward the front until I had to rotate everything to get the board to clear through the front opening. Now I can blow it out and carefully oil.
Hi Mr Jim what do you think of these jauch 77s?
I like them. Easy to work on and well built.
Thank you I have a clock with one in it incomplete though@@JRCLOCKER
I just purchased a grandfather clock with this exact model, we adjusted the chains, it ran for about 4 hours and stopped, chime never worked with lever in position up?? Any suggestions??
Hi, I believe the lever should be up as you have it. Send me pictures of the movement to rodmansclockshop @gmail.com and I will take a look.
Excellent! Thank you
I have been told, when you by a new barrel complete with new spring, to take the spring out and clean it as if you were servicing an older movement, so I do. My question is what is the difference between the replacement barrel and spring ,and the barrel and spring that come in the new movement? Or should you remove those and clean them also? I don't know how they do it at the factory but I wonder if they have two lines? Just one of those stupid thoughts that get stuck in my head. BTW love the videos!
Hi, There is no need to clean a new one. You should always clean old ones. If you really want to see the difference take both a new and used one out of their barrels and look at the difference.
I’m shocked that it was running with that worn of a escapement hole
Will old main spring cause clock not to be able to regulate
It depends on what you mean by "old". I own a few Sessions wall and mantel clocks all with their original 100-114 year old mainsprings. For issues with time regulation, I would focus more on the escapement and resolve any existing issues there first. Of course, this is after performing a proper cleaning and addressing any areas of wear. With that said, my circa 1908 Sessions shop regulator gains 6 minutes a week. That's pretty acceptable for a 114 year old movement with a recoil escapement. So, I just let it be.
When old springs become set they may only run the clock for 5,6,7 days. A spring powered clocks are only as good as their springs. That's why the railroads used weight driven ST #2 regulators in their stations and offices. Weights give you a continues power to the escapement. I don't pre-run clocks before repair because with over 100 clocks in the shop for repair it would take to long and space to do so.
The day before this I replaced a mainspring lol strange coincidence
Thank you! Love it!
added store links don't work., this store not found. I enjoy your posts.
Thanks for the heads up. Links fixed. Jim
Seeing all those movements really has me tempted to go there and buy like 10 of them to fix up and maybe make my own cases for them
I actually saw the second video and realized I have this floating balance model. I saw the -/+ but thought I had to move the screws not the little level on top of the balance. Question if anybody knows: moving the lever to the + sign will make the clock go slower or faster? (as in the previous model moving the screw clockwise makes it go slower, and moving it counterclockwise makes it go faster )Thanks!
This helped a lot! thank you!!
That was great. Lifted a weight and didn't realize it unhooked. Raised the chain too far to recover. Thanks!
Just inherited one of these. I'm very glad i figured out how to stop the chime. Amazing thing tho
I would like to find the arbor alignment jigs, as I struggled without them. Where can one get them? Thanks
One additional question please : I’m used to the swinging pendulums. What is this bracket/mantle clock horizontal type pendulum style called ? Does it have a different name ?
Hello. Excellent video ! I bought a clock similar to this off EBay but that horizontal circular like pendulum won’t stay ticking. I have wound the clock and I take my finger And swing it towards the plus side and it starts ticking but then after a minute or 2 stops. Can you tell me what to do ?
Would a loose governor fan also cause a cuckoo clock to not stop chiming?
Hi Jim, many thanks for this - it was very enlightening. I was getting soooo frustrated watching this, I was about to give up. But, then it occurred to me that this is how it actually is - it takes time, patience, and persistence.... that's what this work involves. I've experienced the same. You didn't do much in the 'this is what I edited to make it look easy' area. It's not easy and that's why it is so satisfying to get these amazingly functional puzzles back to a working state. I get a bigger kick out of the achievement of doing it than anyone else, because others may have no idea what is involved. Just coming off a 3 month long part time total clock restore, as a hobby (which involved French Polishing the case too), I feel that the 30 minutes watching here is very satisfying. Thank you again :)
