I disagree with you Bobby Banas danced to "Nitty Gritty" just fine. 15 million views speaks for itself. Leave race out of it. Singing and dancing is a part of all ethnic cultures.

Inspired but I don’t have anyone to start with. Folks can disagree but being a female hiker and a person of color may not always bring positive attention. IMO

Not every 1 was fortunate to live in areas + more authentic African American cultures like Louisiana or N Carolina. Also, would you replace the name of dance + what new name? Also, there were also in some US areas, free African Americans, often “middle” class who were able to dress as modern stagevperformers.

Jewels, this is powerful, informative and emotionally draining. It’s a tough pill to swallow for anyone with a heart. Grateful for your compelling and compassionate way of educating the public. Being rooted in the world of entertainment, this has special significance having studied this particular song and dance. This has further opened our eyes. And we can only imagine the very different ways Shirley Ellis and her entourage would have danced to their own recordings. ❤

This one is really grasping for straws. Nobody used the word Master Bedroom in the pre-1865 South, it was first invented a half century later in a Sears catalog (1920). And Sears is/(was?) headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota which is a State that never even had slavery at all.

@@marvelousjewelzit’s not opinion. A five second google search will confirm its origins and it only denotes the size of the room. “The origins of the term itself aren’t as old as one may think. Merriam-Webster notes the first known use of “master bedroom” as a term was in 1925. House kits sold in Sears catalogs deemed the largest bedroom in the home the “master,” to make the room feel more upscale. The phrase caught on and became overused with time, with the one bedroom in an apartment referred to as the “master,” or a three-bedroom house with rooms of the same dimensions having one deemed the master.”

Interesting topic. A woman of Barbadian heritage once told me that it meant that the slaves captors would go below deck to where they were kept and would take their pick of which ones they wanted to have sex with; that was getting down to the ‘nitty gritty’. Would you consider doing any videos on signs and gestures and what they mean? This is not connected, but as an example, in England people don’t ‘flip the bird’ when telling someone to ‘foxtrot oscar’, they make a v sign instead. This came about during the Hundred Years War, between England and France (1337-1453) when the French had a policy of cutting the two fingers nearest the thumbs off of captured archers/soldiers, so that if they eventually released them they couldn’t draw the string of a bow and fire arrows anymore, rendering them useless for military service. When this became known, the English archers/soldiers would thrust their bow fingers, forward, at the French, as if to say, “I’ve still got my (bow) fingers “ as a gesture of defiance, or contempt. Not a racial gesture, though certainly a nationalistic one! As such, I was wondering if you had any ideas to share on gestures which may have a history behind them.

@@marvelousjewelz Honestly this sounds about like people being sensitive about the phrase "rule of thumb", which wasn't about sticks and wife beating at all, but people believe it so maybe we shouldn't use it. No thank you. I don't like perpetuating false history (which you pointed out correctly the history here has nothing to do with slavery) by giving in to people just because they can't be bothered to know actual history. Now....hard drives at one point having a master/slave switch...that could be something.
