You forgot the most important reason for Messi's (misunderstood) "walking" in the last third of the pitch. He does so to keep attached to him normally four enemy players --the number of men that on average most defensive arrays need to quickly build a "cage" (that hopefully) would neutralize his movements. If he keeps walking the defense "glued" to him stays along freeing up space so that the actions of the rest of his teammates in the attack becomes more fluid.

The quality of players in the MLS is significantly lower than it is in La Liga or Ligue 1, where he played before. And that's an understatement. Pick the three best MLS teams prior to this year and put them in the Championship - the second tier of English football - and they'd get relegated.

When Messi passes, most of the time he hits it heavy, but it has back spin on it. This allows the ball to go past the defenders quickly and then slow down for the intended target, no one does this better than Messi.
