Fly fishing adventures of my brother and I on the Restigouche river angling Atlantic Salmon.
Salmon on a Dry Fly-Upsalquitch:2024
Dry Fly raises and take of a nice sized Atlantic Salmon followed by live release.
Mike Nowlan is on a Crown Reserve stretch of the Upper NW Upsalquitch. A heat wave is upon us and the Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans has advised of restrictions regarding angling of salmon across New Brunswick. As such, we are restricted in fishing for the morning hours only. There are salmon in the middle and lower 9 mile pools. Water temp is 62-64C with air temp in the afternoon a balmy "feels like 36C". The fishing is spotty with very little interest from the salmon on the 1st morning...However, the 2nd morning provided some exciting interactions! Video shot on a GoPro8 camera.

I am fishing the dry fly water at Larry's Gulch Cedar Ledge Pool. I've been prospecting the pool as the fish here are not visible...after about a half hour of casting I hook a nice sized salmon on a bomber. This was the second salmon that morning out of this pool. Many thanks. By far the best Turle knot tutorial ever!
Thank you @callumbell3846 Tight lines! Mike
Mike, wonderful video. Congratulations and superb angling
Many thanks Gerry!
Another textbook performance from Dr. Dryfly! Thanks for the video Mike.
Thanks my friend!
Excellent fishing, but only for the politicians and the very wealthy. The ordinary guy will NEVER get to fish there
Hi Michel, nice fish. Ignore the 'professionals' and their 'tips'; so silly.
Thanks @ChiroJohnston appreciate your comment...it was a nice fish and will always be my favorite on a Dry Fly! Cheers, Mike
Get the "bag" out of your line; when you see the raise that fish has already felt the hook.
When the fly gets into the foam, the fish does not see it.And frequent casts from the point of view of fish, interest disappears.Pauses are needed .
Well..... I'm totally amazed! There are a few lessons learned here 1. PERSISTENCE 2. CHANGE THE FLY & 3. PATIENCE I can't believe how many times that fish had a go. Another thing noticed when it took....... I thought that's not a big fish........ but it was very deceiving until I saw the amount of water it moved at the 5.20 mark and then showed itself as it spat dropped the fly. What an awesome fish! Brilliant experience! What a superb lesson in salmon fishing! Expect the unexpected! Also, I was very impressed that there was cursing at the end!!!~ :) Tight lines to you guys and keep 'em comin'!
@FinLineFly Many thanks for your kind comments Paul. I will remember this angling session forever. As you can see, we don't get too worked up about losing them, although it would make for a better story...
I read the comments below and they were dead on. You will catch more salmon and sooner by doing what these fellow fishermen or fisherladies wrote in their comments. Please don't take offence by any of our comments.
Lovely fish lads!
Many Thanks Craig! Can't wait to get back...bit of cabin fever goin' on !

@@craigchisholm2643 Say hi for me and while your at it, have a dram or 2 of your favorite libation for me...
The fish didn’t break the rod you did. You held the rod too high. The rod can only bend so much.
It's not a male🙈 Jesus Christ what a bunch of amateurs...no mend, very poor fish handling - pulling it by its tail all away out of the net. And not even capable to classify it correctly 🤮🙈😭 get yourself educated in what you do!!! the poor creature has to suffer cause of your miserable understanding of treating it right🤬
to increase your prospecting, you need better line maintenance. in order to avoid a belly forming in your line, keep your tip higher, and also use a small mend to the first 1/4 of your line. straight lines catch fish, like the one you landed. the more time your line is on the water, the harder it is to keep straight, instead of recasting your line when it bows, repositioning it is a better option, because it keeps the fly on the water longer. hope this helps, tight lines!
"Tabarnouch ya sortie clair de l'eau!" 😂
wow. belle prise once again
Lifting too fast, wait 2 sec longer and the hook ups will be a lot more often
Tight Lines!
Felicitations! un autre beau saumon
Merci Jay! Ils sont tous memorable!!!
Check out Lehigh fishing company. Custom rod manufacturer American made 🇺🇸👍
ton rire quand il le pique enfin. ca n'a pas de prix :) bravo
Awesome!! Love it when salmon take a bomber
Ole shit.
I had 2 orvis clearwater 10' #6 rods break on me. The 1st one broke, after a light tug, to free a fly caught in an anchor rope. Catastrophic failure, the rod shattered in 3 places. The 2nd one broke at the tip,I tested the tip close to the break and it snapped like a tooth pick, zero tensile strength. It is not the angler,it is the rod!
Nice catch!
Thanks!
Beautiful salmon doc! Hope all is well.
Hey Jordan, thanks for commenting...on the river as I type this...so all is well! The fishing is SLOW...
Snapped rods = amateur stuff!! Loose drag 1st then tighten as fight commences lol
That looks like a small 10Ib Salmon we catch here in Scotland on River Clyde! 😂
Nice video!
What dry fly do you use ?
Hi Charlie, I usually start off with a Brown Bomber...med to large size. I feel this is a great prospecting dry, especially on the rivers i fish...Mike
incroyable. wow felicitations ca doit être un méchant feeling :)
Jay, le "feeling" est incroyable!!!
That was awesome. Like someone else said, how everyone stayed calm came up with a plan was wicked! Cool under pressure. A memory that'll last forever. Tight lines indeed!
I will always remember this salmon jamie! Tight lines as well!
Bravo. c'est super beau ca :)
Merci Jay!
That’s a nice fish. No better way to break a rod 😅
What a hog. Just a bullet. Nice 🙌🏻
I have fished the dry bug for many years now and always find that if I present the fly on a clear , sheet of water I get more action. As well, I usually move my rod upstream just before the fly drops to the water to get the float line above the fly---this gives me a better, longer, ripple free presentation. Float it dead. Nice video with a nice fish. Tight lines.
Well done, beautiful to see a specimen fish go back unharmed
I was like f yeah I'll whatch that! Lol
I think the rod broke because you hadnt pushed the rod together properly or it had slightly worked loose while casting
@andyp9678 That was the first thing I checked...I looked at all the connections and they were all seated properly and completely. We all have a loose connection off and on and in the boat I was convinced I either had a partially seated butt to 3rd piece connection or I had "over dragged" him...the latter was the cause. Mike
Drag was way too TIGHT!! Should have loosened up drag and let that Salmon run more to tire out
If the drag is too tight the leader/tippet snaps, not the rod.
He didn't let you hold it
NOT 18 lbs... maybe 10-12 lbs
Fantastic rod, lol
Nice salmon !!!
The most powerful drug in the world, one hit and you're hooked for life
The tug is the drug 🎣🎣🎣
Hard to tell from video if you bowed your rod when the fish jumped
Hey @itiswhatitis9068 I most likely did not do a bow of the rod...over the years, since adopting a barbless fly approach, I found that I would lose more fish on the jump with this configuration than barbed. The value of bowing ones rod to a jumping salmon is for that fish not to snap the leader. In this case, the salmon simply threw the fly as can be seen on the video and not breaking the leader. Mike.
@@harleyhillgang thanks for sharing. Keep it up 👍
Nice knot Willard Brown showed me a loose loop knot one time that let the fly flicker in the water pretty nice unbelievable all the different knots out there for a fly.
Great job Mike!!
Entertaining. A few thoughts. A cast further ahead of the fish, with a good mend in the line or an aggressive wiggle cast to throw more slack in your line would have probably taken this fish in a cast or two. If I could see the drag on your video, the fish would most certainly have seen it as well. The fly you mentioned Is basically a very large version of the irresistible, a famous trout fly. Given this pattern, a simple bomber pattern might have worked as well, though this water appeared to be pretty slow and these are usually stripped in water that is a bit faster. In any event, you managed to piss him off enough to take the fly, and you waited long enough to give him a chance to take it. Regarding that, the rule of saying "Gotcha" before setting the hook can help minimize premature hook sets. Looks like you had fun and that's the most important part of angling!
Hey David, thanks for your input. My 2 bits...this is the kind of salmon fishing I enjoy where it is a game of chess between the angler and the salmon. You are spot on, I had fun! I hear what you say about cast mending/avoidance of drag etc. Here on the Restigouche River, the salmon don't seem too interested in long drifts to them. The optimal presentation is 2-3 feet ahead of the snout. Totally agree with avoiding drag as it will sour the fish you are trying to get a response out of...Tight Lines! Mike
What a thrilling movie! And I agree with many of your thoughts. A cast further upstream could have made it possible to create a longer "ripple free" float of the Bomber by mending the line.. Also, possibly, setting the hook with a horisontal movement of the rod to the right, downstream, would have given a better hook setting. Hope my english writing is understandable, I am a swedish fly fisher. I have long experience of dry fly fishing although not from salmon on dries. But I have caught some big trout on dry flies, and lost many of course...
Seems like he was setting the hook to fast maybe not but I find my hookups are way better if you wait until the fish has taken it under .
