    A monochromator is a nice device (with a very suggestive name), but it really can't pick up single photons. It's not a coincidence that there is no definition of a single photon in this video on single photon counting. Apart from that, I think the video gives a nice description of TCSPC.

    Thank you, Jeff, for the excellent introduction. Some of the materials show long-lived emissions on the order of microseconds. What could be the reason for a material to have long-lived emissions?

    • @JeffreyDuBose-kb2rz
      @JeffreyDuBose-kb2rz ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem, Udara Long-lived emission often arises from phosphorescence, where a so-called "triplet state" is formed, where the electron in the excited state and the electron in the ground state have the same electron spin. Since recombination of the electrons requires a spin flip, which is a classically "forbidden" transition in terms of spectroscopic selection rules, it occurs very slowly and often on the order of microseconds all the way up to seconds. This is the basis behind glow-in-the-dark materials. Other conditions for microsecond-long lifetime could be that a triplet state and a singlet state are in close enough energy that the electrons can jump between those states multiple times (if the energy difference is on the order of thermal energy available at room temperature). This is typically called "thermally-activated delayed emission; TADF" and also extends lifetimes to microseconds.
