State Propositions Study Session
Our July 11, 2024 General Meeting program was study session on the State ballot measures. Club members and special guests presented on the propositions California voters will face on our November Ballots and took questions.
The speakers were:
Culver City School Board President Kelly Kent on Prop. 2, a school facilities bond
District-level DNC Delegate Matthew Hilliard and Club Treasurer Cynthia Hart on Prop. 5, which makes it easier for local governments to fund housing and transportation infrastructure
Club Treasurer Cynthia Hart on Prop. 32, which raises the minimum wage and requires it to be annually adjusted for inflation
California Democratic Party Progressive Caucus Chair Fatima Iqbal-Zubair on Prop. 4, a climate bond
California Democratic Party Renters Council Secretary Alfred Twu on Prop. 33, which will allow cities to enact rent control covering more types of homes
Club President Jeff Schwartz on Prop. 34, which targets the AIDS Healthcare Foundation's political activities
Club Vice President Jeanna Harris on Prop. 35, which permanently funds Medi-Cal through a tax on managed-care insurance companies
Club Legislation, Politics, and Elections Chair Leah Pressman on Prop. 36, which would reclassify some shoplifting and drug offenses as felonies
For more details on the propositions, the LA Times has an overview here:
www.latimes.com/politics/story/2024-07-04/2024-california-election-ballot-propositions-voter-guide
The Club has already voted to support Prop. 3, which puts marriage equality in the California Constitution, just in case Trump's Supreme Court overturns the Obergefel decision, and Prop. 6, which abolishes involuntary servitude, including as punishment for a crime.
Members will discuss City and County ballot measures and vote on them and the state propositions at the Sept. 11 General Meeting.
