Hello, I am here to bestow you with the gift that keeps on giving! I've noticed this trend of people on youtube going to thrift stores, buying high waisted pants, and cutting them into shorts. I have also jumped on this bandwagon, but I wanted to take this art project a little bit further, and also use the legs of the pants. Don't waste the scraps, use the whole beast! There's quite a substantial amount of material here so I decided to make a skirt.
First, I just cut the legs at the seam, opened them up, and made sure they fit my measurements. If you have wider hips like me, make sure you account for that! Trim off the really ragged stuff, then you can pin the fabric right sides together and sew on a sewing machine. Make sure you leave about a half inch of space between your stitch and the edge of the fabric. This will be the front of the skirt. Now, you will need to leave half of this other side open so that you can add buttons or a zipper later down the road. You might even be able to get away with adding elastic, if your fabric has enough stretch to it. Now that I've sewed this side together, I can start hemming the bottom. Luckily for me, the texture and color of this corduroy allows me to sew right over it without a very noticeable line. However, if your material isn't as easygoing, you might have to experiment with different stitches so that your finished product doesn't look too crafty.
I'm no expert at this so I would recommend looking at another video if you really want to learn how to put a zipper in. Once you have that done and you make sure it's really secure, go ahead and sew the top up. Clean it up with a good trim and look at that! You're done! Now you have your custom made skirt, and your supa cool high waisted shorts too.
