Amazing!
Yes.Rigoutat has something spesiel in its sound..BRYNJAR HOFF..may be the best sound after my tast…it is more egal than some of the others in this movie.
Cocobolo 1:03 3:30 Grenadilla 2:10 3:49
For me it is the Cocobolo….but this 2 is for me not like the Rosewood model from the 1970-80..
I had a fine Howarth in rosewood from 1959,but I lost it by accident. I had contact with Howarth for many happy years, and they did help me when I made my recordings with English Chamber Orchestra in 1979-80……
La pluma es de pato? O de ganzo? Gracias!
Es una pluma de pavo. Supongo que el ganso también lo haría.
@@richardcraigwoodwind6087 muchas gracias por tu respuesta!!
You should try play F8
FART WARS 2.0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The black wood in my opinion sounds Overall better.
I switched from Loree to Marigaux and have never regretted it. The tone color is very warm, and has no bright character like a Loree has. Very even scale with mellow dark tone that really sings.
HOWARTH S40 sounds best for me..
I played Howarth for many years. I had a Rosewood oboe made ca. In 1959. Cocobolo was not maked then..I think..
Wonderful video. May I ask how you are holding the oboe at the headstock end for turning?
Thank you! I made a set of wooden receivers that fit into the headstock. The top of the oboe fits into a tapered hole, so it's a simple friction fit - no clamping.
Would be very interested a video on bocals! Love your playing!
Bravi!!!!
Thank you, very much for such a wonderful review of synthetic reeds! Missing now the Silverstein Alta reeds to the comparison! It would be great! Happy New year!!!
Alta is my go-to for tenor and alto- quite consistent and play well. I tried three strengths of soprano and they were all awful. I prefer Alta and Fibracell to any of the Legeres. I’ve had an Alta alto last 18 months!
#gabrielsoboe is so beautiful
😊🥰
🇬🇧🏴
Suono British.
Rigoutat è al terzo posto dopo Marigaux e Buffet Crampon.
Rigoutaut is a third post after Monnig and Marigaux
Well they are all quality instruments, so in the end, it's what works best for you. I think Howarth make the best cors anglais in the world! 😊
I have tried some older Marigaux oboes and hated them. Recently, I tried a newer one (not sure which model), and loved it!
Where is Studio Cut?
Also, where did you purchase the tapered reamer for the bore? I’ve been machining the tapered ID on the lathe before gluing in the new tenon.
I made the reamer on the lathe from silver steel, then cut the flute on a milling machine. You have to grind and polish the cutting edge afterwards to get a smooth cut.
@@richardcraigwoodwind6087 How many degrees of taper?
@@danhoenigman2757 I can't remember. I measured up several oboes and came up with a profile that will work on most.
@@richardcraigwoodwind6087 thanks
Awww what a truly beautiful sound this oboe really has!! Took my breath away!! You should have played all of Gabriel's Oboe though, I really love that piece, and it really sounded fabulous!!! 😀
I was honoured to play it with Morricone 🌟
Wow! Beautiful
The choice is simple. Neither of the two. Just two watering cans...
Thank you, Richard, for such a wonderful review of synthetic reeds. I have been watching a lot of TH-cam videos on this topic to decide which one to try first. Your comparison was so helpful because it compared against your normal cane reed, which most do not do. Very helpful! As well as the key moments where I could more easily skip around the video and compare. Bravo!
👍👍👍
Looks like the Metal series, no?
Camille Saint- Saens!! WHOOOOOOOO!!! i dopnt hear this piece, two decades... 8D nice
hi Richard, thanks for the info! May I know what should I do when my oboe has a surface crack? my teacher told me to use bore oil but i don't really know how...
Sorry for the delayed reply! Oiling the bore helps protect from cracking. It won't help with a crack once it's happened. You need to take it to a good technician to have it fixed properly.
It's a shame that both of these woods are becoming much harder to get. At least compared to a decade ago. they are both dreamy to work with if they're aged, though, and the oils have stabilized or oxidized leaving behind a much dryer and more resonant wood.
You put your reed in a piece of drainage pipe and you'll make it sound great.
Had one for many years. Still regret not having it anymore. The sound was more shapable and penetrated much better than for example a marigaux.
Hi Richard, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Cheers!
Warm, deep, mysterious,clarity.Molto bene
If you're testing reeds, why not run a test using Plasticover reeds to Venn or Legere!! My Plasticover reeds last typically 6 months to a year before needing to be replaced!! And the nice thing is that your Plasticover reeds start at $18 a box for Soprano up to $35 a box for Bari Sax!! And that's 5 reeds, not one like Legere!!!!
True! But we don't have plasticover in the shop, and Venn and Legere are more of a direct comparison. Fair point though!
@@richardcraigwoodwind6087 And if I was playing a Sopranino Saxophone, then I might try Legere! But am in the process of rebuilding my Saxophone collection that I lost most of 5 years ago when Hurricane Harvey hit Houston!! But I will say this!! I am totally sold out on Yamaha professional saxes because of their easiness to play and reaching the upper or lower register with ease, and the saxes staying in tune across the board. I play with metal mouthpieces because you get a brighter clearer and crisper sound from your instrument and squealing the altissimo is easier or dropping down into the basement and crawling out slowly is just more fun and energizing with an Otto Link *8 metal mouthpiece than a hard rubber. And when you have learned how to master and create the type of sound you want to produce for certain styles of music, and you don't need to change your mouthpiece to achieve it, then you are truly a professional saxophonist!!!
Costano uno stonfo di euro.
That one looks like a tenor saxophone
So the Venn has to be 2 strengths softer than Legere?
Well ironically, Venn withdrew their reeds and came out with a completely new, revamped reed shortly after I did this video, so they're very different now. The old ones were really hard. I've only tried the clarinet reeds in the new format, and they're about the same strength as Vandoren.
@@richardcraigwoodwind6087 Thanks for the reply. Since I asked I've had a good look around and it seems Venn are indeed harder than Legere's. Some say by '1' and others by '1//2' so I guess it's just a raffle like always.
What are the outer diameters.
Can't remember. I have a selection of cutters which I've made over time. The flat bottom cutter for drilling out the wood is about 0.2mm smaller than the tone hole cutter, so you don't end up with a visible layer of glue. The tone hole cutter should be the same size as the original.
Wonderful tone
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
What is the name of this trio?
Beautiful sound.
Thank you for this test. My Venn reed arrived yesterday.🍃For me it's the best synthetic reed because it sounds like wood at most.🪵You can play a proper piano and even the high notes come.👍
I have a s50c, and it's amazing
Absolutely riveting. Such remarkable unity across the distance makes this a pleasure to behold!
