talking myself out of new ereaders
i've been severely tempted at various points by new ereader releases like the kobo libra color, onyx boox palma, kindle colorsoft, etc etc, so here I am talking through why I'm all set with my current ereader, alternative options using what I already have, and why i won't be upgrading. Deinfluencing myself lol

listening to you ramble about this is like listening to my own thoughts! almost precisely, actually! i have one e-reader (paperwhite 11, not the newest), laptop, phone, as well as my iPad that I also use for studying. now, I am also a cosy gamer, so I have my old Nintendo 3ds as well as standard switch. exactly like you said about your own collection, I also acknowledge that my tech devices reach far beyond "necessity", and therefore try to talk myself out of this. however, for me, the biggest perk about the kobo is the library integration (+the buttons ofc). as someone who lives in Europe, I find many good advantages with this kobo device, especially since I am an avid library user. i rarely ever buy books, and often swap books on events, loan or borrow from friends. we also have these "take one, give one"-stalls around town that I love supporting. i also do not utilise kindle unlimited, so transferring books every time I wanna read has become quite annoying. still, I want to wait and see what kobo releases next, and would rather upgrade when that time comes :) PS: it is very refreshing to see mindful consumers like yourself online! by owning less, we learn to appreciate what we have <33
@@_soggy yes!! I love the “wait and see” mindset. That has been one of my biggest changes in how I think about purchasing - nothing is urgent, it will all always still be there later! But yeah the library integration is a huuuuge advantage, I use it so so much.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊😊😊
Also I will say I’ve had my kobo libra since 2020 it’s still working flawlessly, I see it kicking for a long time. Earlier this year I wanted a change so I downloaded Koreader to try it out and sync wirelessly with calibre and it almost felt like I had a new device for the first week I had it. Now when I’m sick of the UI I go back to the regular kobo UI and it’s like new again lol
I got the Palma cause I have really long train commutes that can be crowded and can use it at work and it looks like I’m on my phone. I also have a Libra h20 which is portable but more of a two hander in public. I love my Palma for my use case but would not recommend it to basically anyone outside my specific use case, the battery is not good enough for it to be an all day phone distraction replacement like some seemed to say it was; I play sudoku on it sometimes while listening to audiobooks and the battery goes down 10-20%
I definitely don't like the screendoor effect.
useful thoughts. My Kobo is becoming very outdated so I'm considering a new one. I'd like a bigger screen. I read a lot of library ebooks. Sadly my tablet is so old it is barely functional. Gosh I hate software/hardware obsolescence!
I'm in the same boat. Have a kobo clara 2e and I'm so tempted by the kobo libra color and stylus. Do I need it? No. But do I want it? Yes 😔
lol we can resist! clara 2e's for [their] life!!
you are against consumerism, but you have to talk yourself out of buying yet another reader despite already owning several expensive devices for leisure time ? make it make sense
oh NO you caught me, i'm not a perfect human being
@@joreneereads clearly you are not against consumerism, so why did you claim it then ?
I genuinely don't know what you're talking about. I *didn't* buy a new ereader because I am against consumerism. Being opposed to consumerism doesn't mean that you aren't tempted by shiny new gadgets. I talked myself out of buying anything, got better use out of what I already have, and made this video to hopefully help myself and others gain tools to fight the urge to buy things we don't need.
@@joreneereads being against something very much means you don't get tempted by it, so you don't even get the urge. what you have is a spending problem you are fighting, not a principle.
strongly disagree but ✌🏼
the way i watched you talking yourself out of an ereader to talk myself into one 🤣 i really really want an ereader (most likely secondhand) bc for now i use my ipad but its fullsize and its huuuge and uncomfortable for reading, but it makes do so i havent been in a rush to get an ereader. i def want one though :')
OK soooo... I will say, if you don't have any e-ink device... I highly recommend lol. It's low key a life changer. However, there's a big trend of people having a bunch of them that I feel like for myself is unnecessary lol.
I've bought 3 new E-Readers this year (Inkpad Color 3, Libra Colour and Era B/w) and have no regrets. I don't have expensive phones or tablets but reading is my hobby and I like new gadgets every now and again... I always sell the older ones, though.
I'm glad you found devices you enjoy!
I bought four new ereaders in one month...I went a little crazy but like you I don't have expensive phones, tablets etc and my desk computer is ancient.
I went through the same conversation. I was sorely tempted by the Kobo Libra Color but then I thought about what I read and if I could justify the expense. I don't read comics, graphic novels, or magazines on my e-reader so the "need" for colour just isn't there. I read books exclusively so text is text, colour reader or standard. I also have a Kobo Libra 2 that's less than 2 years old and is performing flawlessly so, again, no justification to upgrade. I just decided I am good for now and maybe, in the future when the tech is further improved, I will make the choice to go to colour. Thanks for the usage tips and I might try Pocket.
I'm not trying to convince you of anything, but I've had a Kobo Libra Colour for a few months now, and I absolutely love it. I was an avid Kindle user and still own one for practical reasons, but the device I use daily is the Kobo Libra Colour. There are many reasons I switched to this model. Most of all, I wanted a color device because I needed to highlight in different colors for language learning purposes. As a language learner who mostly reads in a non-native language, I wanted to differentiate between highlights for context and highlights for "new words, phrases, or chunks." If that makes sense. Kindle Colorsoft may have a slightly better screen, but once I saw the extra click you have to go through to change the color of the highlight, I knew I've made the right choice picking up the Kobo -- the UI is much better. The ability to use a stylus to actually write on the screen was a huge plus, though it does need a tweak or two to make it more comfortable to use. I also love the Dropbox/Google Drive/Pocket integration. You can’t highlight or mark on Pocket articles, but you can still use the dictionary with them. If I weren’t a language learner, I’d probably stick with B&W device because they are crisper and brighter, as you mentioned. However, unless you put a B&W and color device side by side, I don’t think the difference is too noticeable in general. I do feel the contrast when I go back to my B&W device, though. But for me, the benefits of having a color device with annotation functionality outweigh the drawbacks-just my opinion, of course.
Oh yeah, I’m a “never kindle” user lol and the drawbacks of the kobo libra color are not dealbreakers for me, I just mentioned them because I find the technology interesting and the improvements kindle made have me hopeful for the future of color e ink tech. I will definitely get the kobo Libra at some point, it just doesn’t currently make sense for my budget or the devices I already own. I’m so glad you love it tho, I am the biggest kobo cheerleader 😂
Can I read The Likeness before the 1st book without ruining the experience?
It will tell you minor things that happen between the detectives in the first book, but otherwise they are independent stories. If you are not strict about no spoilers whatsoever, you can definitely read them out of order.
Do you happen to know the model number of the Boox or do you have the link you purchased it from? It seems like a lot of sites that sell the Boox reader don't actually have the name "Leaf 2" in the title. 😞
I think the leaf 2 has been discontinued and replaced with the Page!
@ Thanks…I think I read somewhere that Page was the name in the US and that it was called Leaf 3 in China. I think there’s a Leaf 3c coming next year and people are speculating that the c means color, but I don’t think I’m going to wait that long.
@@janelle.loves.languages let me know how you feel about what you end up with! I’m a nerd about ereaders 😆
@@joreneereads Will do! Just a correction… bc I’m trying to catch up on like 4 years of missed technology….😅 apparently the color version of the Boox reader already came out this February not next year. They keep changing the name of their main e-reader even though it’s nearly the exact same software with a bit of an upgrade on the hardware. So yes the Leaf 2 turned into the Boox Page, but the Boox Go Color 7 is pretty much the same as the Boox Page but just with color e-ink. Lots of choices!
Oooh I'm actually looking for a new e-reader. Actually just really sick of Kindle. Right now, I mainly read on LingQ to avoid my doorstop of a Kindle (not that it's that big, but it's better served as one *Ouch* ) I just really want to get into reading on a decent e-reader so that I can drop LingQ's monthly fee. So far I'm comparing PocketBooks to this one to Kobo Libra Colour. My final decision is really going to be a mixture of features that I absolutely cannot live without and things I can compromise on. I wish something was made exclusively for language learners *Sigh*
have you tried the app ReadLang? it’s similar to LingQ but the free version is actually useful. you can use it on phone/tablet or the boox devices. I tend to use it when I’m newer at a language and then more advanced I just switch to my kobo.
Thank you so much, Jo, for this thoughtful and detailed review/explanation of your e-reading experience. I found this video immensely helpful.
My husband and I moved halfway across the US once with at least hundreds if not a thousand books (mostly picture books). Everyone who helped us said they would never move those books again, lol. Now I am slowly going through said books and trying to curate a collection I like a bit more than all of the random books we bought as beginning elementary school teachers.
@@theoraven never again! 😂 the entire time I was decluttering I was like “I cannot BELIEVE how many times we moved when I was a child” 🤣 never once with movers and always with hundreds+ of books and the stuff of 3 kids… it was miserable for me as a child I cannot even imagine for my mother lol. This time I’d lived in a studio for 8 years so really couldn’t possibly have that much stuff and STILL had to get rid of so much…
omg hi! this popped up on my recs hahah i love the decision to bring various oversized books despite the impracticality with the suitcase xD i paid the overweight bag fee too, no regrets. lol i mainly brought books i hadnt read yet, since i knew getting books in english would be a bit difficult (and costly) where im living now
@@xojaci i don’t think I’ve talked to a single person yet who didn’t have an overweight bag 🤣 that is very smart!! I was afraid to bring books I didn’t know if I’d like, so I tried to read all of my unread books first, but definitely English books are going to be way more scarce here 😳
I was just thinking I had not seen a video from you in a long time and "poof" here you are like magic and moved to Spain no less. How exciting! I have not read Wild Sargasso Sea (but it's on my shelf), although I have seen the steamy movie version. I presume the book is more entertaining. I have moved across North America twice and left large libraries behind both times. I end up buying favourite books or books I have owned before over two or three times to build my library back, Not exactly a fiscally responsible way of life! 😂
@@binglamb2176 thank you! if Europe had as thriving of a secondhand book market as the US, I potentially could have nearly broken even on my $100 weight charge rebuying these 😂
I've just finished this book and so hopped onto youtube to hear some other thoughts. I completely agree with you! I thought the book was really well done. I loved the voice of Lia and the mystery of the whole thing :)

Just caught this comment in my review filter, really enjoyed your video!
@@joreneereads Thank you! She is one of my favorite authors!
I've seen it only after digging quite deep into the subject after an online argument on Discord, and despite this being the most informative of all materials I've seen today, it's only been viewed 400 times while videos that can be summarised by"but Scandinavia!" gather hundreds of thousands of views. Sad to see, and a bit unfair, but regardless, 2 years after uploading, thank you for this video. It felt objective and is well put together and easy to understand for someone with attention issues.
thanks so much!! a quick "gotcha" is definitely more interesting to most people than a "well... it's more complicated" ramble 😆

I think you did a very good job in giving an honest assessment of the Leaf. I'm glad that you were able to figure things out and get it set up in a way that works for you. Boox devices do require a person to not be inhibited by technology. I think the benefits of having an open system device like a Boox is way better than a closed system. Thanks for taking the time to review the device. I am curious if after a year you are still using and enjoying it?
@@philologus6577 yes! I got a kobo as a gift and I do reach for that more because it is easier to pocket or throw in a bag, but I still greatly enjoy the boox and am very glad to have it. Thanks!

Thank youuu! Annie bot was a really good listen
Oh wow, you're back!👍 I have been tempted to pick up the Silo series a few times but have always held back because I was not too sure I would like it. I think I will give it a chance now. If I could get my unread shelf down to 10, I would take that as a win as well(long, long way to go).
Yes! 🙌 I really enjoyed the series, a very solid story imo. Thank you!
I entirely forgot that I want to do my Unread Shelf, or at least start working on it. It is far too easy to get books from the library, lol. The only books I have purchased this year at least are pre-orders to support authors I love, and I hope to read most of them as I get them.
I am so excited to be done so that I can be footloose and fancy free in the library 🤣 I do want to keep financially supporting authors, just more strategically. Plus pre orders and new releases are just exciting sometimes!

I think the exclusive listing is only 90 days. I have used on spare droid, and put kindle & kobo app & others and use only for ereading, gps, and can turn screen to grayscale only to simulate b&w like ereader.
It is the full time your book is on KU, the enrollment period for a book is simply 90 days (which auto renews) - if you want to sell elsewhere you have to unenroll and remove your ebook from KU. You can sell physical and audiobooks elsewhere, but being on KU as an author is inherently exclusive (I don’t know whether authors with publishers can get better deals or not, but it doesn’t seem like it.)

I wouldn’t say mine is 100% flat, but it’s not very rounded.
This has been a very helpful video! I'm very glad i found your youtube because you covered stuff most review videos don't.
👍🏽
The best review ever comparing these products. Well done👍👍
I'm looking at getting a kobo for just library books as the ones I like to read are expensive on my kindle paperwhite. My mum says I don't need a not e-reader, but I do use borrowbox on my ipad mini 6 but the glare on the screen is so hard to read sometimes. I'm just thinking of getting kobo nia just for library books as I'm UK but everyone seems to slate that one as being a bad one to get. What do you think please? I'm just thinking of the price of it on Amazon prime at the moment.
I have definitely seen mixed reviews on the nia, so I’m not sure! They do usually go on sale when kindles do, though, so maybe for prime day you could get a better price? Good luck!
Thank you. Might wait for prime day then and see how much the Clare 2e goes down for. @@joreneereads
I use a Kindle Fire for my e-reading. I got one as my first tablet before I had a smartphone, and then got a new one when it got cumbersome to use. Now I'm actually back to using my original one because the newer one died. I don't need a tablet for anything other than reading at this point, so I've been thinking about getting an e-ink reader of some kind when my original Fire decides to stop working eventually. I assumed I would get some kind of Kindle (even though I didn't really want to) because change is hard and so is researching something like this, but your videos and people's thoughts on the Minimmersion Discord will probably change that. I still have time to do some research because my old Fire is still chugging along. (The Ipad mini screen reader function is an interesting addition to throw into the thought process.)
The e-ink screen is really great, I didn’t really buy that it would make that much of a difference until I tried it lol, but there are definitely advantages to tablets… especially when you already have one 😆 The kobo is a pretty seamless switch from kindle unless you already own quite a few kindle books.
Once you read from e ink you won’t want to go back to backlighting in Fire/iPad. I have a Kindle PW and Boox Palma and love them both.
I have a used Kindle Fire and then installed the app Everland (used to be Scribd) and thats how I read all my e-books. It's a really good app, loads of great books! (I hate the ads on the Fire though 🤢)
i always forget that they changed the name! I’ve never used a kindle fire, but it seems like a really handy tablet
Everyone I see on booktube seems to think the only ereaders are Kindles. Thanks for giving other alternative choices some love. I have had a Kobo since 2017 and upgraded to a Kobo Libra 2 last year. I love it and find it very user friendly. In Canada, it links to my library so seamlessly. I will admit to having a Kindle Basic for books which are not available on Kobo but those are very few. I use the Kindle about 10 % as much as the Kobo. I am definitely in the pro Kobo camp. Happy ereading!
same! I know I said I couldn’t pick a favorite, but realistically it’s kobo. it’s just so good. I wish more people would try them out!
Nervous Conditions has been upgraded to a 5 star read… sorry I ever doubted you bb 😘
The Hundred Years War on Palestine sounds like a foundational book for understanding events happening now.
