I've loved this town ever since I came here to River City back forty-odd years ago. It is still the Violet Crown of the Hills, far as I'm concerned. But after all the changing years, shifting scenes, and moving musical grooves, I can't help but always come back to the best dance band I believe I ever enjoyed anywhere, led by a man with some kind of brain and a story to match. If you can manage ...

From a broadcast of the Folkways radio program on KUT-FM in Austin Texas Dr. Rodney Moag the Pickin' & Singin' Professor and the Infamous Bob Miller, hosted by Dan Foster back about 1998, before quality control guidelines were instated. So Long Mance Lipscomb and Teodar Jackson
มุมมอง 1812 ปีที่แล้ว
This is one of only a few recordings I know of where Mance Lipscomb plays with a fiddler. Taped by UT student Tary Owens in 1965, some of the music of fiddler, Teodar Jackson from Austin, has been released and is available from the Field Recorders Collective fieldrecorder.org/ This is recording from the same series, but has yet to be released. Mance's father Charles Lipscomb was a fiddler born ...

Field recording of a legendary Texas Style fiddler from New Mexico, Garland Gainer. Gainer moved to Austin, Texas in the 1970s and was a major influence on young fiddlers in town. He was recorded by Bernard Molberg and Leo Sullivan in 1973, about the time he was featured in a performance at the Paramount Theater thanks to the Austin Friends of Traditional Music.
Festival of Texas Fiddling 2021: North Carolina and Texas
มุมมอง 503 ปีที่แล้ว
The 7th Festival of Texas Fiddling was held at the Twin Sisters Dance Hall just outside Blanco, Texas, Dec 3-4. My assignment was to provide insight into the influence of North Carolina fiddling on the music in Texas. This was the best I could do! Many thanks to Christy Palumbo-Foster (guitar) and Angie Wooten (banjo).
Missing Happy Valley 2021

January 10th, 1857 Thomas Jones Foster and his brother William saddled up to make a long journey from the Yadkin Valley in Western North Carolina, headed for Texas. With four horses, a wagon, two bushels of corn, seventeen pounds of salt pork and seventy gallons of whiskey (59-cents a jug), and sixty dollars cash they set off for parts unknown. More than a century later, Christy and I went back...

Thats my great grandpas band!
Who was your great-grandpa?
@billyinthelowland the guy on the far right, Vernon Roaa. Im 90 percent sure there were two bands called Ross's rhythm rascals and the picture from my great grandpas band is not the same as the texas band
My family tree, here in real time. History was made & will always remain. Thank you, Heavenly Father! #Great, great grandfather #Great ,great uncle
This is Felix Dolan on piano Not Paul Brady .
Great!!
When and where was this recorded? It shows up Mr. Johnson's style perfectly. Reminiscent of Eldon Shamblin, who played with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
This is a sublime. Great photo as well.
SO great!
Awesome tune.... and superbly done!! uhhhh ... Hey.... Adam Hurt, so you're doin' the banjo on here?? Miss you!! Great musical memories, thank you!
Sounds great! Keep em going
Nicely played!
Perfect.
A tune well played all around. Waytago!
My mother is a Humphries, it's really amazing getting to hear their music tho we're so far removed now
Heck, what a hoot!! If Harold could hear this, he would turn soomersets.
Gorgeous. Majestic.
Nice tune.
Just when I thought I'd heard every yodeling song there was to hear, along comes this. Great stuff!
Hell yes! I loved it. "Blind George McClain - - the man insane" How he billed himself and accurately.
So good!
Fabulous
makes me recall other recordings with A part better cord changes
amazing cartoon photo of the little not with the big body guitar, not even using a capo how can his fingers reach
fascinating
Nice....!
Ah, thanks! Listening to this along with the slides helped me 'get away' and 'get back.'
The legend lives on...Thanks Dan!
Bravi. Posso sapere chi è il costruttore? Grazie se mi rispondete.
Terrific playing!
Really great version!!! Thank you so much for posting this. I don't know the people in the photos...but I like them just the same!
This is my great uncle. He gave me fiddle lessons. We used to listen to jams at Fiddle N Bow Music in Houston. Please message me.
"Is it future or is it past?"
The photos we never get to see!!! Thanks Dan!!!!
My name is Joel Humphries. I have deep roots in east Texas. I play in a band called Wildcat Thicket
Mighty Fine!!!
I used to see George play at the Bijou in San Antonio. The stage was hollow so George would really stomp out the beat :)
Tune is a bit more appetizing than the title.
Got any more from this jam?
I liked the song until 3:26 lol
L-R in second photo: Creed Birchfield, Howard Hausenfluck, Joe Birchfield, and Bill Birchfield.
Sounds like "Three Thin Dimes" to me!
The tune is Melvin Wine's "Devil's Dream". I'm skeptical about that list of musicians, though, especially Joe Thompson. It sounds to me more like a group of younger, "revival" musicians (maybe at Galax), though it could include Harold Hausenfluck (and possibly Abe Horton?). I might be wrong about that, though. I'm guessing this track was on a tape (likely of festival recordings) which included those listed musicians on various tracks.
and with all due respect, the fiddling sounds a bit smooth and silky for Harold's typically rough and rowdy style IMHO
This is amazing!!!

@@TimRowell Check out Melvin WIne's Devils Dream
Remember seeing Vernon play as a kid. He was a good man!
Sorry for your loss
That's my uncle George!!! Love you my Uncle George ! ! RIP.
Thanks Dan for posting! I've been looking for some recordings of him. I had a friend, Leo, that did sound for him and would mic the carpet where he beat his feet. I saw him somewhere on 6th street in the late 70's. Loved it!
The correct URL for the collective is fieldrecorder.org.
Great song
