*FormJAPAN #3: Yukihito Tabata*
The third installment of FormJAPAN features Director of Tokyo Gallery+BTAP Yukihito Tabata.
As Japan’s first contemporary art gallery, Tokyo Gallery pioneered the introduction of Western contemporary artists such as Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, and Jackson Pollock to Japan. It also played a crucial role in early global promotion of leading Asian artists like Taro Okamoto, Jiro Takamatsu, South Korea’s Park Seo-Bo, and China’s Cai Guo-Qiang. Yukihito Tabata, whose father was the founder of Tokyo Gallery, grew up surrounded by world art from an early age. His initial influences were European modern art movements such as Bauhaus and Russian Constructivism. Later, at his father’s suggestion, he began to appreciate Chinese painting and gradually became deeply engrossed in Asian art.
In 2002, he opened the contemporary art gallery “BTAP” in Beijing, China. While Chinese painting is clearly receiving higher recognition than Japanese painting, Tabata believes there are still opportunities for Japan. Having seen art from around the world, Tabata shares his insights on what future artists and designers need to do to move people’s hearts.

*Form #2: FormJAPAN*
Once, there was a strong connection between “form” and our everyday lives.
Forms such as objects, spaces, and visual communication design emerge as designers and creators draw inspiration from their daily experiences and observations. These forms transcend space and time, blending into our lives. We believe that “form” and the experience of everyday life are inextricably linked, and that’s where our ethos as people resides.
These days, forms are diversifying. Some prioritize ornamentation and presentational techniques, becoming detached from the fundamentals of everyday life, which obscures their purpose and essence.
What forms will enrich our daily lives in the future? What lies behind them? Form means to shape something or the essence of things. Arata Maruyama, the founder of our design studio &Form, and our associates began this series of projects to explore the essence of design and creativity.
Following FormSWISS, our second installment, FormJAPAN, gathers perspectives from creators excelling in various fields such as visual communication design, contemporary art, and film.
Japan, where &Form was founded, possesses beauty and collective values that differ from those of the West. Through Form, we explore the scenes where renowned contemporary Japanese creations emerge, aiming to draw the outline for the future we aspire to create.
