Martin Hill | September 2024
Spend the day at Martin Hill ATV Trails - probably the last time this season as the trails close on the last day of September. It was a nice day of riding, but the trails are in major need of some maintenance. Several trails were either washed-out or blocked by fallen trees. Several of the trails that were washed out from our last trip in June were even worse. We had to take several detours on forest roads just to get around some of the areas where we were trapped. Safety is always first - DCNR needs to get up there are do some trail work or they will find people on the forest roads to get around the dangerous areas. We will be contacting DCNR and hopefully, they make some repairs before next season. Overall, however, we had a great time! It's always fun to visit Martin Hill trail system.

We're back at Martin Hill for the first time in 2024. Beautiful day of riding with just a few hiccups along the trail, including some rocky, washout areas that forced us to turn around a couple times. While DCNR is clearly doing some nice maintenance on sections of the trail, other sections still definitely need some work! Despite - we still enjoyed the ride!

      Wish you guys could have been there, too! ... yeah we missed the dynamite shed. I assume it's in that section between Marker 5 and 2... it's that section right across Wertz road at Marker 5 that is so washed out - very large ditches and uneven boulders exposed that we can't safely get up that hill. Hopefully, DCRN makes some improvements before next season. Right now it's no longer a blue trail in that area.

    • @hdvidclips
      @hdvidclips 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree! Same with the closing dates - not sure why they insist on keeping so many state forests summer only trails. Allowing side by sides and extending the riding season to fall and winter where possible would be a huge benefit. I did see some areas, such as Potter, Elk, Clinton, Bradford counties etc. are really expanding their ATV-legal roads. Large network of riding areas that connect multiple state forests so hopefully that is a clue that things are moving in the right direction. When they see the need, maybe they will adjust to reach the demand for these things.

    • @hdvidclips
      @hdvidclips 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So glad you guys got a chance to get back on the trails! ... Saturday was a touch warmer so it wasn't too bad. We did two blue trails. The first was trail 30 to 33 (we have done this before but only in the winter as it's pretty grown in during the summer)... we like that trail but this time there was a large tree down and we did not have a saw or a way around so we had to turn around. That was a little sad because I was looking forward to taking that route. Then, we did the lower part of fuzzy - 18 to 13. That was not too, too bad but there were a couple tall rocks that you’ve got to watch out for. We did not do it this time (and probably won’t do it again) but we did 22 to 20. That was VERY rocky (I think I remember seeing you guys do that in one of your videos?) … that was basically like crawling down a creek bed. Wife did not enjoy that one at all. But that’s it - there are so many other trails that we are just afraid to try because there are so many rocks on many of those blue trails… but the side trails are calling my name! Do you have any other blue you have done?

    • @rzrpap
      @rzrpap 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hdvidclips we have only done fuzzy and 20 the rest are just too rockey and narrow for us. Still looking forward to seeing you on the trail sometime. Keep riding and posting videos.

    • @hdvidclips
      @hdvidclips 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @rzrpap oh wow - let's hope they move more quickly with that than the grave ridge section that has been shut down for 4 years, "temporarily." I didn't realize they had plans to expand trails/bridges! Wonderful news. Interestingly, not sure if this is related, but if you leave Big Flat parking area and turn right down the mountain, on the right-hand side there are gates up and clearing being done. It certainly looks like they are making trails but that might be wishful thinking. On the main trails, they have been doing some visible minor work! I'd have to follow someone else down all the other blue trails because it's sometimes too much for just the wife and I alone. When it's just the two of us, sometimes we worry what happens if we get in a pickle, ya know? We cautiously explore blue trails :) And likewise, we'll give you a heads-up next time we head up maybe the timing will work out to meet and do some riding, too!

    • @hdvidclips
      @hdvidclips ปีที่แล้ว

      They certainly have! I’m not exactly sure what the end result will be and if this is only temporary for logging & timber, or if they actually plan on capitalizing on some expansion and new trail development? I did hear something about them receiving a grant, so that could mean more maintenance on the trails, and hopefully a few new trails. Looking at the map, I can see how they could easily transform this into a nice little looping trail. Believe it or not, we still have not gone past Wertz Road yet onto the second half of the trail system where the bridges are. The wife actually had hurt her ankle and was wearing a brace so we were trying to take it easy on this ride. When we got to Trail 5 the ride up the hill looked a little steep and tipy so we turned around there. Next time though! We hope to go back again before it closes this year.

We did run into a DCNR ranger and while he did not have specifics on that section, he did say that he heard someone mention that the reason it was still closed was because they were conducting trail maintenance on that section before reopening. @@kyw6779 I will say we've only explored a few harder trails; we find them much more enjoyable in the fall and winter as they get really narrow and pretty overgrown. The largest issue with the side trails we've found is that they are not so much "difficult" but ROCKY! Some of them, really REALLY rocky. We like Trail 30 to 33 (Staley Alley) - nice trip through the woods with only a couple small rocky areas. It was great in the winter with a little snow. We also did 43 to 39. This was a little slower with a few rocky areas that were a bit of a challenge. There is also Fuzzy Trail - the lower part 18 to 13 is not too bad, just a little hill climb that had some ruts last time we were there. The longer section from 13 to 4 is also doable but with some sketchy areas and roots to climb over. Other than that, we have not explored any others except 22 to 20 which is HORRIBLY rocky. It's short and downhill & connects to the easy trail but if you're not interested in crawling over rocks at 2mph then you're probably going to want to avoid that Trail. It's like a creek bed without water lol . Really hoping they open up the Grave Ridge section soon.

      This is our second time here and we really do enjoy this place; different kinds of trails from what we're used to.

      Great trail system! I'll be uploading quite a few from our trip on Saturday. Really enjoyed ourselves. Looking forward to heading up to SSRT in a couple weeks!

    Thanks for sending me the video I am subscribed to your channel but I did not see on your channel.

      I have most video unlisted at the moment as my channel is a bit of a mess; trying to clean up old videos and pointless things I've posted or uploaded to share and turn it in to something a little more enjoyable to watch. There are tons of videos no one would care about so I hid everything until I delete and organize :) thought of making an ATV channel but it's a lot of time to make good looking videos!
