This is just a place where I like to share some of the games I play with the viewing audience.
The Book of Beasts; Let's Play Fabled Lands: part 59
Legend tells that long ago in the dawn of time there was an age when many children lived in families who could not afford any kind of computer and thus gamebooks were rather popular. These gamebooks came in many series' and among those series' was Fabled Lands. Now a computer adaptation is available and I'm certainly going to dive right in and enjoy it. I hope you all enjoy our adventures together.

I forgot you were still playing this game too
A particularly creep episode, remember the mirror encounter from the original game, they really have adapted this well so far
It's a very good mirror area. Different enough to avoid feeling like a clone but similar enough to feel like the town created it specially just for James.
Good progress Raph, keep up te great work
Nice progress made, this video. 28:40 You can indeed use the Lysandrian Mace, by transferring it from your quest inventory to your hand slot, although its dmg is abysmal. There are also some other quest inventory items, that you can use in a similar manner. I think if you have a stack of empty bottles, and very quickly click on the red healing fountain, you can fill several before the fountain temporarily deactivates. At least it worked once for me. Might be a glicht or intended. If you untick [Always use best attack] under [Options], [Game Settings], you can choose which attack you use. Forward moving, you do a overhead bash. Backwards moving you do a stab. Moving sideways, you do slashes. This can be useful with swords and axes, that do decent dmg with all attacks. That way you can control the attack you do, which is useful when fighting in narrow spaces. For blunt and pierce weapons I find it less useful, since they deal far less dmg with their secondary dmg types. 40:14 Now you know what weapon I use on my dumb strong ox playthrough, that I currently try ;-) There I put all skill points in blunt weapons and all attributes in Str, with only a few in Dex, Vit, End. But more seriously, as far as I observed, the only effect of not meeting skill or attribute requirements of a weapon, is lowered damage. So if the resulting remaining dmg (or DPS = dmg * weapon speed) is higher than for another weapon, it is still worth using weapons despite of not meeting their requirements. Arguable DPS is not as important as pure dmg in Monomyth, since an effective style of fighting is walking away while regenerating stamina, then charge up a strong hit at the right time to let a foe walk into it. So depending on how you fight, weapon speed is not that important and thus a slow heavy hitting weapon might be much better than a higher DPS but low dmg weapon. Examples at around 1:01:43 - The Excellent Spiked Mace does 55 blunt dmg at .84 speed -> 46.2 DPS, despite of you not meeting all its skill and Str requirements. (With the Str+1 you put in later it should be much better.) - The Excellent Broadsword does 50 slash dmg at .93 speed -> 46.5 DPS, despite of you not meeting its skill requirements. - The Excellent War Axe does 50 slash dmg at .90 speed -> 45 DPS, despite of you not meeting its skill requiremetens. - The Excellent Raven's Beak does 49 blunt dmg at .77 speed -> 37.7 DPS, despite of you not meeting any of its requirements. - The Excellent Short Sword does 40 slash dmg at .98 speed -> 39.2 DPS, including the bonus you get from surpassing its skill, Str and Dex requirements. - The Excellent Dagger does 33 pierce dmg at 1.23 speed -> 40.6 DPS, including the bonus you get from surpassing its skill, Str and Dex requirements. So the Spiked Mace seems to be overall best, at your current (in the video) skill/attribute level, considering it's easier to use attack pattern and higher damage. But it is on par with the Broadswords DPS, if you want higher speed or the more versatile set of effective attacks, when you switch off the [Always use best attack] setting. I did not test if reach advantages exist in Monomyth. Obviously the weapons with higher skill and attribute requirements will profit much more from you increasing those. So do not expect the above order apply if you next time increase them! By the way: The strong attack (hold LMB until visual cue) also staggers enemies out of the healing potion animation, like the kick, but usually takes less stamina and deals more damage. 1:32:34 Putting on those yellow glowing hot ~1000 °C chain mail pants on your body, to carry them from the forge fire to the anvil does not seem to be a good idea. Also: You can change the orientation of items to place, using the mouse wheel. 1:37:52 The ladder you are looking at, there, is useful. You should easily be able to jump over, from where the torch is at. 1:38:30 Seeing the shadow behind the waterfall, a curious mind ...
A very curious mind. mostly because every time I've been there, the shadow appears to be in front of the waterfall and not behind it. I can assure you, I would never attempt to don white hot armour in real life.
Trick I figured out with picking up items, like grabbing swords from the coals to move to the anvil. Keep your inventory open and you can keep the sword as your cursor instead of the weapon dropping into your inventory.
Yes, but you can't physically turn around with the inventory open so I was unable to transport the item from the forge to the anvil.
@raphaelperry8159 hmm, odd, works different for me. As long as I open the inventory, I can still move with the item held. I'll test it again and report back.
I believe I could move forwards, backwards, left and right, but could not rotate the camera on the spot to turn left and place the item on the anvil.
@@raphaelperry8159 I can confirm, that it is the same for me: Just forward, backward, left, right. No camera turning. However you can rotate items held up, using the mouse wheel. Useful for placing swords right on the anvil.

If you helped the samurai rather than help the village girl from the witch then you would have got a samurai army to help you in book 4 or 5 I think
I guess the samurai come in handy for book 5
Yeah this book was tough
Brilliant job, Raph, really great readthrough. Well done as its a tough one but I remember enojying book 3 Usurper. Cheers
I remember the flower girl (and how insidious and intelligent yet subtle that protection racket was).
What an adventure. Thankyou for releasing this episode so soon!
Congratulations on surviving this very difficult book!
FYI, the Tyutchev fight is completely avoidable. When given the option, choose "tell them your story". They are completely engrossed until Mardolh kicks in the door and suddenly we have a bigger problem. It allows us to avoid fighting Tyutchev or Cassandra, at the cost of missing out on the modifier bonus we get for poisoning or shurikening Thaum.
You can also get the bonus for using the Sun Star ring on Thaum but then you don't get to use it on Mardohl.
Afaict, "Iya na inu" means "nasty dog" in Japanese.
Interesting.
I must ask, are you playing this game at night, alone?! If so, you are one brave man!
I have to do all my recordings at night after everyone else has gone to bed. I typically start recording between midnight and 1am but sometimes it's even later.
Great episode. Can't wait till the next one!
Haha what a rant..😆
Haha ..jump you fn fly 😆
Jumping puzzles are awful and have no place in this sort of game. I’m totally with you on that point.
While I don't disagree with you, I might have voiced my objection a bit too vocally at times.
@@raphaelperry8159 I don't like jumping puzzles either. Personally I think the best solution for games, that are not entirely based on them, but have them to add variety, would be to make them optional (or very easy), through detailed difficulty settings. Just add separate difficulty settings for combat, jumping puzzles, how much grinding is needed, loot scarcity, item degradation, etc. That said, it is understandable, that it is more difficult to do, since it requires developers to balance many ways to play the game, instead of one way to play the game. It is noteworthy, that there are game mechanics in Monomyth, that allow you to bypass the jumping puzzles. That is a spell and a consumable herb, that allows high jumping. You encountered the herb several episodes ago, but refused to pick it up, because it looks evil. In my two playthroughs, I did not spent much more than a minute on the jumping sections you encountered today, or the maze like jumping puzzle you found in another dungeon some episodes ago. In my first playthrough I used the jumping herb to bypass them. In my second playthrough I had all my attributes in 2*Int, Cog and just a little bit health and all my skill points in the magic attributes and solved all problems with magic. Generally you are also making your playthrough harder, by spreading your skills and attributes points so wide. This results in your character being good at nothing and bad to mediocre at everything. E.g. with a pure physical build, having a lot of athletics and one very high melee combat skills (my first playthrough), you can just jump to all kinds of places and defeat enemies much easier in melee combat. E.g if you would put all points in intellect, cognition and the magic skills (my second playthrough), you might have the spell, that allows you to jump sky high and far. You can stack the spell onto yourself so many times, that you can jump across the whole map. You might splat to death, if the spell ends mid air, though. The herb, does the same, and also stacks. A pure magic build also allows you do decimate the enemies quite quickly, from range.
Yeah. Have them be optional.
When you light a candle it goes on your belt somewhere so you can still fight with both hands
There’s a fountain near the church that glows red you can fill the empty vials you have 4 or 5 to dip in fountain and create a healing potion wait 20 seconds and make another one , rinse repeat. The blue fountain makes mana potions
Ooh, spells! A taste of things to come. Maybe certain attribute increases or pieces of equipment can help with mana/health regeneration, beyond the usual potions and food...
Do you remember the prison, you freed one of your brothers servants, from one of several cells? There you read a note, saying not to put prisoners in one of the other cells. A curious mind might want to investigate why that is so.
🤔
Curious what 3 skills would you choose that are Very helpful from the first book avenger
Arrow Cutting, Picking Locks and Disarming Traps and Immunity to Poisons are the three skills I normally use for book 1. You certainly want Arrow Cutting for the rooftop fight with Yaemon at the end of the book. You need both the others (and Climbing) for book 2 but you don't need Climbing very much for book 1. As for the other two I vaguely remember that one of them is more useful than the other for the first book but I can't remember which.
I think if I remember if you had the skills of acrobatic you could have run from this fight against the brigands
Yep. I just didn't have the skill because I didn't take it for book 1.
So close to the end now my friend, keep up the great work
Assisting Lord Kiyamo would have given you 100 samurai to help in book 3, AND the villagers would have been safe because, as they tell you in the text, Onikaba would have sent a detachment of samurai back to solve the problem of the Hannya and her O-bakemono henchman. The villagers would have been protected either way.
Interesting. I do find this route generally more entertaining to play than the other one but it's good to know that actions have lasting consequences beyond just the present book (as, indeed, we saw with the repercussions for meeting Olvar the Chaos Bringer in book 1 ).
@@raphaelperry8159 Well, yes, but we had no choice with Olvar. We do with Kiyamo, so that's the first time we have a real cross-book choice, apart from the choice of our skills which has an impact across all the books.
Yeah. It's not quite Lone Wolf level of interconnectedness.
@@raphaelperry8159 Oh, yes. One thing I forgot to mention. That Samurai bodyguard also can be a factor in book 4, if you have it. You can select them to be your bodyguard. It costs you popularity with your subjects (who wish you trusted your own citizens more) BUT they are absolutely incorruptible. Which your other bodyguards aren't.
Yeah, this is something I missed in my last read through and suffered for it in book 3 and 4. Perhaps another attempt!
57:00 They inserted the two maps the wrong way round in this book. You ought to find the map of the underworld here! XD
Greatest game this year!
omg, I can't keep up between Valheim, Enshrouded and Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon
@@glowinTHX I think Valheim was released other year, wasn't it? Ensh. I didn't like at all, TG is good but not so great as Monomyth on my opinion. M. is the first game that fasanates me after JA3
01:39:40 Excellent!! Not a fan, Raph,??!
It's one of the 3 films I've seen with Keanu Reeves in it. The other two are Speed and something like Johnny Mnemonic. I honestly just haven't seen him in much else. Bill and Ted is like someone read the original pitch meeting for Doctor Who and seriously misunderstood it.
Loving the atmosphere of this game, much hilarity from Raph!
I'm enjoying this series and your commentary. Just a quick point of clarity: if I'm not mistaken, the Rusty Sword weighs 1.11 and the War Cleaver weighs 1.4, making the cleaver heavier than the sword.
I finally found someone, that hates platforming games and platforming puzzles in other games even more than me. Regarding the ghost's body parts, minor SPOILER below: 1. Free Loyds Farm and one of the farm hands, held there. 2. Talk to the priest in the Chapel of Rahi, afterwards. He will give you the quest to lay the murdered farm hand (I think his name was Owen) to rest. To get the dialogue, you might need to talk to Loyd and the other farm hand on the farm, first. 3. Talk to the ghost, that then starts to indicate the locations of his scattered bones, if you walk around Lysandrian Heartlands. 4. After collecting all 6, you can bury them right at the backdoor of the Chapel of Rahi, that is locked. You either need to pick the backdoor, or take the path with the slimes, to get on the other side. It might be also possible to jump there with a very high athletics skill, or with the use of magic or consumables. A spoiler on how to (partially) bypass annoying platforming passages. There is an effect, that makes you temporarily jump very high. You either get it by a spell, or by consuming the plant, you previously refused to pick up, because you did not like its look.
Everytime Raph puts out a new video..i hear the Match of The Day theme in my head 🎶
Really enjoying the current LPs. Keep going man.
Jump higher and run faster by unequipping heavy items.
I see said the blind man to his deaf wife on the telephone 📞 😆
If you are going blunt damage there is a spiked mace in the barracks 😉
I must have missed that. Oh well, I'll be going back there to collect those short swords at some point. The problem with the blunt skill is that it doesn't add to shield use the same way the bladed weapon skill does. That, and the general lack of blunt weapons in the early game makes it fairly unattractive in comparison.
27:32 Looks like I need to go back and check that corner behind those barrels now doesn't it?
For the portcullis?
haven't been able to watch the series as my account is screwed up and doesn't believe I'm 18. my apologies. Also the bata for Monster hunter Wilds is out on until Monday on PC I'd gibe it a shot do some research into the games mechanics and how weapons work. looking that the MH wilds mechanics overview and then picking a weapon of choice should be sufficient. I'd see if you can get a friend who has more exprince with the series to help out to begin with. hope you give it a look.
Sorry your account's still messed up. I hope you can get that fixed soon.
Imagine a Netflix TV series of these books
I remember first encountering these books at a old book shop ( remember them) in the 80's in my search for back copies of marvel( notably daredevil) and DC comics.. The artwork was amazing seeing ninja's in a fantasy lord of the rings world was cool
It was pretty epic wasn't it?
If you died would you start from the beginning or where you left off on these audio podcasts
I think it would depend on the death but my default ruling is that I'd restart from the beginning of the current book rather than the beginning of the entire series.
So that's where you got that signet ring 💍. That ring comes in handy in later adventure
Any more Monomyth coming Raph?? 😊
Yes. Absolutely. I was just too exhausted to record anything at all last night.
