Grief, Trauma and the Healing Power of Words with Poet Hayley Frances
Hayley Frances is a poet and poetry therapist from Birmingham. Her debut collection, Administer the Laughing Gas (www.hayleyfrances.com) (VERVE Poetry Press), is a raw and unfiltered exploration of grief, trauma and body autonomy, offering profound insights into the human experience. As the first Poet in Residence for Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Hayley’s work bridges the worlds of creative writing and healing, helping individuals navigate loss and re-encounter life through the power of words. With over 15 years of experience, she integrates poetry into healthcare settings, leading therapeutic workshops that foster emotional and relational awareness.
This episode delves into Hayley’s unique approach to poetry therapy, her personal journey through grief, and the deep insights she gained from our Earth Medicine Grief Tending retreat earlier this year.

Many tribes here in the USA all have their own way of doing Pipe Ceremony. Also there was a time when the Lakota did not want white people to be Pipe Carriers - I was crushed - went to a friend of mine with First Nations in Canada - he told me they were not referring to me. It was more about the ones doing it for money and fame. I was reassured I could continue. Great Spirit never told me I could not lead the ceremonies ....so I continued and still carry the Sacred Community Pipe. Also one of my teachings from Brooke Medicine Eagle was most of the Holy people of the tribes were killed and many traditions lost. We also must allow for Spirit to come join us for the Ceremony and when that flow begins - the good stuff follows.

Myth is not the same as factoids or propaganda. So many podcast use this expression of debunking myth. A myth by definition cannot be untrue. Normally I would not comment it, were it not a podcast where you also talk about dreaming, non-linear time, archetypes.

Wow . The stuff about believing that because your parent has it will give you the disease but believing something else will keep you from getting it is pure toxic BS . It's arrogant and it's wrong . I think this mind game comes from trying to shame others whose human experience has threatened your sense of safety and control . So toxic .

This reinforces feelings I have had about my own healing . The experience of the earth as a source of healing and wisdom is so ancient and fundamental. Our conditioning has disconnected us from an understanding of that .

As a dreamer (the last level of a shaman), and wielder of chaos, I have lived much of a pre-patriarchal life in my spiritual fated path, and the wholeness path of burning real karma. Dreaming and Death cannot be separated when one is moving deeper into the spiral medicines of the self and the nature of karma that begins to arise, long past lucid dreaming into dream walking, out of bodies, and time jumping. There is no real transcendental experience as a way of life without these. Scholars do not experience what we shamans do, it is very intense and frightening that the real stuff dreams are made of.
