Missouri River Catfishing Rod & Reel and Checking BANK LINES #fishing
On this trip, I wanted to take my 5 Year Old Son Asher on His First Catfishing Trip on the Missouri River. We head out with Olen who own's KC Rodbenders Guide Service. We drop the boat in at Kaw Pointe and started checking Bank Lines that Olen had baited up the previous day with LIVE BAIT. We ended up checking all the bank lines and ended up catching a couple HUGE Flathead Catfish, Several Blue Catfish and also a couple Gar were on the lines.
My son was having a great time and got to actually pull the lines in from the bank pole line that had the catfish on them. He got excited every time we pulled up with the boat and saw one of the lines moving.
We only planned to check the Bank Lines but, Asher was doing great and so we decided to fish the Missouri River with some fresh cut bait. We instantly started getting bites and then one rod hit hard. It was a 58lb Huge Blue Catfish and it put up a great fight. Asher was able to reel in the large fish most of the way until it started pulling hard enough that I took over for his safety. #fishing #catfishingbanklines #pvcbanklines #bankpole #missouririver #catfishing #CatfishingMissouriRiver Catfish KC

What is your Go-To Bait? Do you prefer Live Bait or Cut Baits for Catfishing. Even though it is widely known that Flathead Catfish REALLY REALLY like LIVE BAIT, there has always been the question of how big is too big. Also, I have caught almost half of my flatheads with cut gizzard Shad. I don't fish with large Carp as LIVE BAIT often, but on this night, all I had in my Bait Tank was 3 large c...

I decided to fish for Blue Catfish and Flathead Catfish on the Kansas River less than a Mile from Kaw Pointe and where the Kansas River meets the Missouri. This spot was very very Muddy because of the sudden increase in water depth and then it lowering quickly. I was almost waste deep in mud even 6 ft. from the bank. This fish was hard to land and I feel like I was part of a catfish spawn etc.....

My WORST and SCARIEST NIGHT CATFISHING in the BOAT at KAW POINT (KANSAS RIVER) 2023
I would and I currently have one captivity that will be that size by summer after next! My dream is to donate him to a local Bass Pro Shop tank when he gets too big to keep for me to house. Or, even better!, to take him to some where in body of water where he will be safe and never have the chance of being caught or harmed. But I’m not sure if you can release a catfish who has grown up his entire life in captivity??
I don't know. Personally I'd let it go back where it can thrive ... But being in captivity this whole time might make it a good Bass Pro Fish ..I always lean towards letting them go and grow
That carpet definitely won’t be making any schedule or unscheduled flights with all the glue and staples. There is something to be considered about the affect of gravity on flooring material.
Haha!! It's still doing fine. I'd probably use a new carpet if I could do it again but, it works... Didn't go too light on the staples or glue 😆
Just fished the bank at olathe lake. Are the catfish everywhere or do you recommend fishing the dam? I usually go for crappie as i have caught more than enough bass in my life, that i honestly dont care for em. Any idea if the catfish and crappie at olathe lake are edible? Great vids man!
Thanks!! I'm not completely sure where the fish are biting at Olathe right now. If I was there, I'd try at the dam. Maybe even at the bottom of the hill by the fence where you can cast into deeper waters to the left and cast into a little More shallow water on the right. You could try both deep and shallow and see what works.
I can appreciate using the propane tank as a weighted roller. That's using your head!
I was in the moment and thought it was perfect 😂😆.. Thanks. Hope you have some fun fixing it and get back on the water soon!!
@@CatfishKCthank you!
We are currently doing this with ours. We have the SeaNymph Fish and Ski but same issues! We are yanking out the foam though. We are also converting the front into a storage spot for the trolling motor battery and make a small casting deck.
I probably could have changed the foam as well but, I wasn't sure how long I'd use the boat and it wasn't necessary for me anyway. I like the fact that once you start taking the boat apart you can start converting the space inside to how you want it. Good luck!!
@CatfishKC Thanks! We will post a video when ours is finished if you're interested
Yeah that'd be awesome!! Just subscribed
You can use a hanging flower pot to put the root ends in. It protects the roots from the fish eating them.
If you use rain water for your tank, do you have to change out your water?
Also, do you still put salt into the water?
Unfortunately using rainwater alone won't eliminate the nitrates. You can use sand in the bottom of your bio filter and it will help to eliminate the nitrates. Plants in the tank as well. I rarely do a water change anymore. If I do it's usually 2+ months in between and it usually has more to do with smell and cleanliness since my tank is in my basement.
If you used rainwater I believe you'd be just fine with the quality of course. I would still check with just a test strip or two to make sure you're good. All we really use is an RV water filter to get the chlorine out of our tap and when I add water if it's just a bucket or two I leave it sitting out for 24 hours or so that way the chlorine and other things can evaporate out.
I have not used salt in my tank in a long time. It's a pretty drastic measure if you're seeing a lot of ick or that type of sickness going around to your other fish. I've seen salt work on fish that were sick but, I don't add it anymore. I have a netting in my water that holds a lot of my roots in, but some of the roots do grow through the net and the fish tend to leave those alone as long as I'm feeding them a little bit every couple of days. With using rainwater, the quality is going to probably be just perfect. The issue of water quality after that depends on your filter, you're good bacteria and media in your filter and also really just depends on your ammonia levels being taken care of as well. Rainwater can go bad with fish dying or being left in the tank or a filter not doing its job. So it's just good to always test the water quality and make decisions from that.
@CatfishKC thank you again for all of your help. For some reason, I will get one fish that looks like it has some sores for lack of better terminology. Eventually, it will die. I remove it as soon as I can after it dies. Within a few days, I notice a new fish getting the same type of sores. Just trying to figure out what is going on. Again, thank you.
It cumed on you
I think I was in shock lol😂
He just got busted on 😂
😂😂
You just got nutted on by a damn catfish . How do you feel now that you know . ya new name is fish jizz 😂😂
Man I think I knew what it was when it happened.... I was in denial lol
I'm pretty sure using a large mouth Bass for bait is illegal in Kansas
Depends how you catch it and if it's in the length limit. On top of that, this one was caught from a private pond and been in my bait tank for about a year
@@CatfishKC yeah try telling a game warden that. I'm 99.9 percent sure you can't use a game fish for bait no matter where you get it.
Actually a game warden and the KS Dept of Wildlife told me that when they went through my channel with me.
Well they must have change the laws then
Yeah I looked it up, it said you can use game fish as bait as long as you catch him on a Line & Hook.
I was there the night this was made. 😅 Shout out to #AndyG 😅
It was pretty sweet. Coolest Pole holder I've ever used 😂
I'm over here literally dyin' laughing! I can't believe that this actually made the Ole TH-cam!!! Hey now, don't be hatin' all you haters! I've got a picture of it as well as a cat that was pulled using it! There was a purpose for it! If you look straight out at the corner of the building, you'll notice a triangular dead hole of water. Well you could cast a line over there but once your line settled and drooped down it would get into that fast wash water. In turn that would suck your line right out of that honey hole. So I put this little pole holder together to get our rods way up in the air so that when the line drooped, it did not get into that wash! And low and behold, it did work!!! It does look like a tweaker job, but hey, you use what resources you have laying around you!!! And.then leave it for others to try out or possibly even learn from LOL!!! Awesome video my friend! Have to hook up with you and take you out on the river in my boat and see what we can do!
Actually that is genius. I have wanted something that would hold my line up out of that rushing water because it drags it out of the hole and there you had it and I didn't even use it like that.. Awesome Craftsmanship man!!
Hello do you know what boat ramps are safe to use on Kansas River? I fished by Eudora over 20 years ago thinking of trying to fish again. Thanks for videos on flathead fishing pretty awesome.
Thanks for watching!! Ive just used the boat ramps in Lawrence, DeSoto and Edwardsville and they are good boat ramps. It depends on your boat if it's a heavy boat that hangs down far in the water you might have a hard time dropping in but, if you have a smaller boat or one that doesn't hang down in the water a couple of feet, you should be fine dropping in. I have dropped in at Kaw Point which is also a good ramp if you want to fish either during the day or over the night on the Kansas closer to the Missouri River. The gate does close at that ramp at 10:00 p.m. Turner Diagonal boat ramp is one that I would say is not safe because there's a lot of interesting things that go on there as well as people's cars that get broken into and things stolen. I have gone to Turner many times but I wouldn't suggest it to people because I know a lot of people that have gotten their windows broken and things stolen. Hope you find this helpful!
I have a 20ft flat bottom can go on 1foot 6 inches of water sometimes shallower. Hard to fish some of the rivers here in Iowa. Do you know the cfm volumes of river I should look for? Thank you
Yall got ahold of some monsters...nice job...nice trip man!!!
Thanks! We had one of the best trips!! Perfect weather and to have my son with me was the best part.
Great day on the Water. Well done sir.
Thanks Bryan!! We had a lot of fun out there and learned a lot too!!
Great day you guys KC Rod Benders put you on the fish that young man and his dad will have some memories to share for life.
Olen is great at what he does!! And we had the best day and made some really cool memories!! Thanks Eric!
Man! Just watched the intro. This is gonna be great. Reminds me of going on fishing trip every July above Milford with my uncle since 91! Catch bait, run lines, pole fish repeat for 4 days! Great memories! Some great fish so far. Take care!
We had so much fun that day! Made so many good memories with my son and had that fun fight at the end. Thanks for commenting and watching!!!
@@CatfishKC great to see ya out there with him! That’s what it’s all about. Putting in as much quality time, preferably outdoors, hands on, will help develop a better man. In my humble opinion.
I couldn't have said it better and I completely agree!! And he got started young and I'm glad he is so in love with the outdoors and mainly fishing!! Thanks
Fun day!
Such a fun day. The weather was perfect and just everything went great. Awesome memories
@@CatfishKCno doubt, what a fish. Youngster dosnt realize what he just helped catch. I’m sure he will soon enough.
He might have been a little tired from seeing all the other fish and that big one was the last thing we did. But he's been talking about it for sure 😂
Get rid of rhe bell thats what the bait clickers for
Jingle Bells Baby!!! But, this is Matt, was it me using the bells? I used to use them years ago. That might have been Nick that was using them.. That's also a very noisy damn where you can't hear yourself think, so we usually wouldn't Rock The bells because I know they're so uncool nowadays, but I can see maybe Nick had a bell or two on because of the rushing Water and it's hard to hear. don't worry we're up to speed on what's cool and the bait clickers are what's in baby!! 💯
Longview full of some big flat heads and a lot of nice clean channel cat but you need a boat to get over there in the trees and I can catch a boatload every time
I haven't fished Longview very much but, Olen with KC Rodbenders who I went with has really found some of those spots on Longview that produce some big fish. Like you were saying, there are some big flatheads in there and actually he just did a guide there the other night and got a really nice size flathead. I've realized when fishing this area, you can always learn from those around you and that's why I stay humble and actually enjoy listening to people's experiences and learning new things. I appreciate the comment!!
Matt next time stop by Dollar tree pick up glow sticks pop one and put it inside your bottle / bobber and it makes it real easy to watch and the camera will pick it up too.
Very true. I used to have glow sticks in my bag but, I really didn't plan on floating any baits haha.. It was a last minute decision but, it definitely would've been nice to get that take down on camera with glow sticks
Awsome catch. Killer year in michigan for me. Caught 6 over 40lbs and countless 30+lbs flatties. New subscriber✊️
Man!!! Killer year man. Congrats!! I appreciate the sub and hope you continue to still have an awesome year
I was thinking about using carp for bait i used sucker fish and was slaying em and carp is so much easier to catch than suckers
Yeah they are a lot easier to catch. This was one of my first times using it as my "main" bait for the night. It seemed to work well or it was a good night they were biting.
Hell Yeah! Great job guys 💯
Thanks sir!! Much appreciated 👍
I have a Berkeley big game surf rod with 30lb big game trilen what rig do suggest running for big blues and flatheads?
I don't get too crazy with specific rigs and I try a couple different ones while I'm fishing. I generally would stick with the Carolina rig with maybe an 8 oz no roll or a 8 oz Bank sinker on a sinker slide. Then a swivel and then a 50 lb+ or more leader. I have started putting on a float just to get bait off the bottom a little bit if possible. I guess that would classify as a Santee Cooper. The 3 way rig is helpful and has helped save me a few times with the weight breaking off instead of the fish, but sometimes in high current the three-way rig seems to get tangled a little bit. so it just depends on what current and also I test out a couple while I'm there. I also like using mono as my main line but I do have braid on one. I use 40 lb mono mainly on my main line. 30 lb is perfect. The other night I was using a Carolina rig with the Gatorade float bottles 😂.. Which I would change if I did it again. Probably would have had the bank sinker not on a slide so it forces the bait to stay at a certain level.. Especially with the larger live baits. Good luck!! I didn't realize how long this message is 😂...
@@CatfishKC i appreciate all the info I read all of it 🤣🤣 I normally fish nice size ponds and big lakes but Im about start going to the Mississippi river I might try the Santee Cooper rig
You should get an award just for reading all that lol. Good luck and yes the Santee Cooper rig is great!! I hear good things about the Mississippi

Oklahoma angler here, what’s water temp your way? I’ve been waiting on those big boys to bite.
Hey Oklahoma!! I believe the water was around 77 or so. I was so glad when I saw it was a flat!!
Good trip brother!! Congrats on that sweet flatty!!
Finally the walk to the truck wasn't so sad this time lol. It was a really fun time and thanks... First flatty of 2024
Great night of catching, not just fishing. One of these days I will have night like that. Congratulations
It was a good night from how it has been. We didn't catch a crazy amount of fish but they all bit pretty quick. I know Nick left around 4:00 but we didn't get there until 2:00 in the morning. we were running really late that night. Keep it going, and I hope you get on some fish real soon!!!
@CatfishKC my is still valid. If you ever need or want someone to go fishing with you, I'm available. By the thanks again for your help with my bait tank. It's up and running.
Yeah man! It actually helped going back through some things and remembering in case I need to fix anything. But, that style of bait tank has really worked well for me anyway and glad to hear it helped. Life is so crazy right now I can barely get down to the water myself but hopefully in the next couple weeks things will be a little easier. Where have you been Fishing mainly this year?
Mainly olathe and waterworks. Fished a couple of times at shawnee.
I used to fish Water Works and Lake Olathe a lot. I'll let you know when things calm down and see if we can link up
Well if ur gonna wait til september to catch ur 1st flathead of the year, thats the 1 to do it with!!! Awesome flat man!! Congrats
Haha That's what I was saying. I've been waiting for a flathead to bite and finally. But, the first one of the year I can't complain a little over 54 lb and it was kind of a fun way to catch it watching those bottles disappear. I wish I had that on film. Thanks man!
Nice flathead!!
I'm in the KC area, would love to go fishing with you sometime.
I like meeting people and fishing. My parents are going through a rough time and it's been hard on my year in general and I've barely been able to get out to fish. Hopefully life can slow down in the next couple weeks!!
Man that looked like a good time!
It was fun and just no pressure. just poles in the water and us talking. Didn't have a lot of fish but they were nice ones
@@CatfishKC can’t beat it!
Getting those carp from cedar lake? That place is infested with them
They pile up in any little corner there. I was keeping them in my bait tank, but any longer than a week in my bait tank, the other fish start having signs of either a stress related disease or something else so I don't want them in my tank anymore. it is infested over there at Cedar
Amazing fish. I always want to use a a float and never do. Might change that soon. Awesome fish!
Thanks for watching!! I used to use plastic bottles like that when I was younger. I really wanted it off all the logs.. They make pool noodle floats haha. I pick up trash and put it to use.
I guessed 60
I like your guess better lol. It was about 54.50... You have a good eye
Catfish KC, This video is fantastic! I liked it a lot!

That looked like a fun trip..keep killing it!
It was fun!! Thanks bro!! Hope you're having a good season!!
Nice trip looked like a great time
It was fun because even though we were going to be going after some monsters, the weather didn't agree and I'm glad because I needed a trip where we had consistent bites and fish being pulled in. He's a great guy and fun to get along with
I go with him in the winter for crappie fishing. Hes the best.
He really was knowledgeable and fun to go out with. He didn't tell me to say all those nice things about him haha.. But, it's nice sometimes just get out especially when your boat's down and have a good time!
Nice runner.
Thanks!
Sir, you need the factory OMC service manual.
Some guy was nice enough to upload the videos from VHS to TH-cam and I went over those. They were over 45 years old but still worked. It's very detailed and definitely what I needed. I appreciate him putting them up haha!!
Nice cat!! Keep up the good work!
Hope you're having a good year!!
Nice cat!! Keep up the good work!
Thanks!! I appreciate it!
Seen and used bluegill works great never ever have I seen someone fish for catfish with a whole bass or carp I mean what works I just personally wouldn’t use a bass I only catch and release bass even though they taste so good
I understand where you are coming from, but flathead catfish and blue catfish love eating bass, crappie, bluegill, sunfish, carp, Asian carp. Asian carp is actually one of the most popular baits on the river right now to use. I know that some people don't understand or think it might be clickbait, but the reality is, that all of those fish I mentioned are getting eaten by large catfish every single day whether they're on my hook or in the water that they live in. Thanks for the comment and I hope you have a great year of fishing!!
Nice catch man 😎😎

Hell yeah GET'EM!
