Oh Kirk I will forever miss your poetry, thank you for being a light in the world as long as you were in it 💔😔

This is Kirk’s husband, Jamie. I’m sharing a tribute written by Carl Jenks. Kirk was the voice of Carl’s Poetry Corner and loved doing it. --- Kirk Lawrence Has Passed Away by Carl M. Jenks I am shocked and deeply saddened to have to report that Kirk Lawrence, the distinguished voice of Poetry Corner for the last several seasons, passed away in Cuenca, Ecuador of Covid on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. I first met Kirk in August, 2021, after Dana Gioia drew my attention to the wonderful readings Kirk was posting on his own TH-cam website, Bespoke Vocals. I reached out to Kirk to see if he might be interested in becoming Poetry Corner’s Designated Reader, and he graciously consented. Kirk made his Poetry Corner debut on September 7, 2021, reading Matthew Olzmann’s “Letter to the Person Who, During the Q&A Session After the Reading, Asked for Career Advice.” In the months and years that followed, he read dozens and dozens of times for Poetry Corner. He quickly became an essential voice - indeed, in some important respects the only voice - of Poetry Corner, and my subscribers and featured poets remarked many times on the value he added to their experience. Before beginning his collaboration with Poetry Corner, Kirk had a long and distinguished career as a stage actor, most recently as Hook in the “Finding Neverland” national tour and as the Wizard in “The Wizard of Oz” national tour. Other roles included Maurice in “Beauty and the Beast”, Doc in “West Side Story”, and Admiral Boom in “Mary Poppins”. He brought a thespian’s nuance to every poem he read. He cared deeply about his work for Poetry Corner, and it showed every week. This is my favorite poem at the moment. I'm almost 15, and I'm still hiding my transness and queer identity from my family. It's hard. Almost everyone at school knows me to be friends with the weirdos and f@gs-the suicide squad they call us-a cute little name they gave us after one of our friends took their life. Most of my teachers are supportive. Some aren't. I am surrounded by queer peers, and yet I still feel alone. I think we all do. One of my friends is so incredibly proud of his identity, and I truly wish I could feel the same, but I can't help feeling like I have to earn my rights like my queer brothers and sisters did 50 years ago. I'm going into high school this September, and after all of the awkward icebreakers and outings via email to my teachers, I hope it will be better. Maybe one day I can feel a sense of belonging in my community, even if it is temporary. Thank you for sharing this poem with more people. It deserves it ❤

What a fall! Light rain, a dark road torn apart by the wind. A guard at the outpost asks, “Where do you go?” I pause trying to remember the password. Here I am, back to my fatherland. Thank Gods! I’ll burn sacrificial money at the nearest altar. Stupid head - does not give rest to the legs, stupid feet walk in vain but believe they ought to. I saw those tired of running around, I saw the impoverished, who did not ask for alms. I saw the alive for no one you meet these days has either the will or the strength to kill someone else. I myself crossing the line did not draw a line, in my soul I had nothing but hatred, and to top it all, monkeys howl and I taste blood in the mouth. “Jack and the Moon” by Marie Howe After driving home through the forest, I curled into bed to sleep, but Jack wouldn’t let me. He whined and barked - high-pitched barks I’d not heard before. No, I said, from under the blanket. No. Still, he barked and paced and paced and barked, No Jack! Then yelped strange high yelps, followed by low growls, as if he might, by the mere scope and scale of his pleading, persuade me, until I did finally throw off the covers and open the front door through which he hurried, not to sniff or pee, but to sit on the lawn, his back to me, a small white dog facing the moon lit by light so bright I could have read these words within it. And when I went to fetch him, he scooted farther way to sit tucked into himself, gazing into the flooded distance. A very cold night - I stood a while at the open door - calling Jack! Jack come, come now! (willful, stubborn dog!) And when he didn’t come, I curled up on the couch, wrapped in a shawl and dozed for I don’t know how long . . . then woke, went again to the door and said quietly, Jack. “Monogrammed Aspirin” by Elaine Equi Excedrin is the Cadillac of aspirin - or maybe I just like them because each one is stamped with an E. Looking at them in the palm of my hand, it’s hard not to identify with a brand that has my name, or at least my initials, on it. Why it’s just the thing to take for those times when I’m not myself, which, as it happens, is rather often. I also like the fact that they contain caffeine. It’s as if the manufacturer anticipated my groggy, glazed eyes and said: “Here, take these with a cup of coffee, O.K., never mind, you don’t even have to get the coffee. We did it for you.” They must really understand me. Even the bottle is my favorite color: emerald green. Recently, I purchased the gelcaps by mistake. Being something of an aspirin purist, I’d resisted for years but was pleasantly surprised. In some ways, they’re even better. They look exactly like two-toned (green and white) M&M’s, and they do have a cool, melt-in-your-mind sensation that lasts about ten minutes - kind of like smoking a menthol cigarette. Come to think of it, they remind me of my old two-packs a day brand of Kool cigarettes (which had a similar looking white-and-green package). Back then, a cup of coffee, two aspirin, and a cigarette could fix most everything. Now I’ve quit smoking and switched to aspirin-free Tylenol. But there are still those headaches, those days, that seem to call for something extra special - like nice dishes or guest towels - and for them, I still break out the monogrammed aspirin. “Monogrammed Aspirin” by Elaine Equi
