Some additional rules specific to acetylene cylinders. If a cylinder has received a sharp blow or been exposed to direct flames or intense heat, it should be carefully monitored for at least an hour with no attempt to move or handle the cylinder, for signs of self heating or vibration, as this indicates acetylene decomposition, and the cylinder could detonate without warning. The area should be evacuated immediately and emergency services summoned if there is any reason to believe decomposition may be occurring. More than 1/7 cylinder volume per hour should never be drawn, because doing so could draw acetone out of the cylinder, possibly damaging rubber O rings or seals in the torch or regulator, but most critically, leave a void in the cylinder where free acetylene can compress and cause a dangerous reaction. It may by necessary to switch to a larger cylinder or connect to a manifold system if more flow is needed for the application. Propane, butane, propylene, or hydrogen, often referred to as alternative fuel gases, do not have flow rate restrictions and may also be considered for use with large heating tips where high flow rates are required.
