Sjaak Douma is a pianist, composer, producer, and music transcriber. Perhaps best known for his indie-electronic output as Analogue Dear, he has recorded and released music since 2012 through notable labels as bitbird (San Holo’s imprint) and Erased Tapes, to acclaim by FACTmag, Vice, and Indieshuffle. As a collaborator, Sjaak has worked with accomplished mathrock guitarist Yvette Young, and has released official remixes for Nils Frahm, San Holo, Droeloe and Catching Flies. As a composer, Sjaak has worked with Gemeente Rotterdam, Ons Amsterdam and Innovatielabs.
As a music transcriber, Sjaak has worked with BMG, Universal Music, Britten Pears Arts and artists such as Mike Boddé, Iris Hond, Remy van Kesteren, Michiel Borstlap and Cor Bakker. In 2023, he started his own sheet music imprint Schvung.

Fantaisie-Impromptu Op. 66 - F. Chopin
Catering to my inner 16-year-old that thought this piece was the apex of piano literature.

Hermoso!
Amazing, but I must say, does it not hurt to read music with the book flat like that?
Thanks! Wasn't too bad honestly, but I'm not sure OSHA would approve.
Very nice performance bro!! keep it up 🎉
Just popping in here real quick to say that Jeneba Kanneh-Mason played this piece as an encore yesterday and I recognised it thanks to this. 🙌
Awesome! I guess we both live and learn, because this is the first time I've heard her name. I'll definitely check her out
@@sjaakdouma I think she is quite young, but played superbly :)
thank you for sharing your performance of this wonderful piece, sjaak! i always enjoy listening to chopin :)
Thanks so much Anton! Hope you're well out there
this explains the gap in upload time
Haha yes, I'm glad I finally got this out of my system. What's that symbol next to your name btw? Are you youtube-verified or something? Is that even a thing?
@sjaakdouma I had to go through some rigmarole when some of my videos got combined with another Blumen, so at some point I got it all merged into like an "artist channel" I think? So my albums and stuff also show up on my channel somewhere rather than those like auto-generated "artist - topic" youtube music ones.
@@blumenmusic ah sick, makes sense!
Wow, ongelooflijk mooi Sjaak! 🎶🥰🎶
Ah vandaar dat deze video even op zich liet wachten
Oh yes. I can relate. To play this piece is every adolescent's wet dream 😂
Haha, for sure! I'm glad I finally got it out of my system ;)
Oh heck yeaaaaah Wonderful work and well done, Sjaak!
@@kobitoergosum Thanks Kobito! I missed your cheeky comments ❤️ Is Germany as freezing cold as Holland at the moment?
@@sjaakdouma Thanks Sjaak! 🥰 I missed your weekly uploads, but I always knew you'd be back with a banger. It sounds super challenging as well but you pulled it off perfectly! Yeah, here temperatures are mostly around the freezing point. Got some snow a while ago, but was nowhere near the snow chaos around this time last year. Hope you're staying warm and comfy in your cosy cardigans. ✨ Btw love how even you guys call your own country Holland hahaha
@@kobitoergosum I was actually hesitating to call it Holland haha! And yes, this time of year means 24/7 cozy cardigan game. You could say I'm heavily invested (I'm in vest? Anyone?...I'll show myself out.)
@@sjaakdouma Great pun! Like your comfy cardigans, it is appreciated 😌
Wow😮😮
Wonderful, unexpected, amazing interpretation of one of my all time favorite songs! i cannot thank you enough for this.
Thank you so much! It's one of my favorites of his as well, such a gorgeous song.
excellent work out there! i believe the secret is in the left hand work, in this waltz as well, you are treating it gently and carefully like a master! i wouldn't rate this performance very far from the vast majority of professional performances can i ask you how many hours you have practiced on this piece?
Oh wow, too kind! And thank you so much for your elaborate reply. I think I spent 3 weeks with this piece. You're absolutely right in regards to the left hand in general, lots of ways to go still :)
Is this Keyscape? Piano sounds incredible!
nice playing, chump
Very lovely piece 🎶🥰🎶❤️
You sir, are no chump. It's a lovely piece and well-played. Thank you.
Thank you good sir! Have a great weekend out there in the real world.
Another name I've never heard before, but sweet piece! P.S.: Your cozy cardigan game is superb ✨
Kapustin is the bee's knees man! You should look him up, he has this whole 'Hide the Pain Harold' thing going on, very funny. The man's a bonafide genius though. Thanks for noticing my cardigan, it might be my all time favorite. It has lots of color going on to offset my drab personality <3
@@sjaakdouma Just listened to the 8 Concert Etudes and daaamn, they slam. And I see what you mean, his face is splendid 💕 Sjaak "drab but fab cardigans" Douma
@@kobitoergosum one of his best sets for sure! Not for the pianistic faint of heart though gah damn
Nice ! The fugue also qualifies (hint, hint....)
Hint taken!
Thanks for making a case for Hugo van Dalen's music ! I knew his name as a benefactor and friend of Bortkiewicz, but had no idea he was such an excellent piano composer. I'm not exactly looking for more work, but I'll probably have to buy your score and help spread the word.
Wow, what a delectable piece. As you say, Previn could do it all - and then some. Great work transcribing this from audio ! I would definitely love to have the sheet music - if you don't mind my recording it as well for YT.
Thanks Chris! I've been following your work for a few years by this point. Very inspiring to say the least! I would love to see you take a crack at it. You can find the transcription right here: drive.google.com/file/d/1SOFm518levKccc1ybExA0sAJBJ4YZTGz/view?usp=sharing
@@sjaakdouma Thanks so much ! And great to hear you appreciate my channel. Previn was my hero, more than any other conductor. I many LP's from his productive tenure as chief conductor of the LSO. Anything he touched he turned to gold, you just could not go wrong with any recording. I knew he was an awesome pianist (also have his LP with Gershwin's Rhapsody and Concerto with André Kostelanetz) but have never really listened to his solo work. That should be about to change now. I'll dive into this lovely piece right away - just what the doctor ordered :)
Wow ! Beautiful 🎶🥰🎶❤️
Beautiful! You choose wonderful pieces to play and post. Thank you and well done.
Thanks again for the love Joseph!
Mmm sweet and sour candy, and slight hints of jazz? How is Scriabin so underrated? Maybe that's just my musical ignorance but I think I barely heard of him before your videos, and his name doesn't pop up at classical venues around here.
Right?! Criminally underrated fur sure (let's ignore the fact that I barely heard a single note of his up until last year). I guess we live and learn.
@@sjaakdouma A Scriabin discovery is never late, nor is it early. It arrives precisely when it means to. (Ha, UNO Reverse'd that Gandalf-ism right back atcha!)
Outstanding! Thanks for posting this!
Many thanks Joseph!
Beautiful 🎶🥰🎶
An apple a day (and a peppy piano piece like this) keeps the autumn blues away

@@AlexeyKuznetsov-Music many thanks Alexey! Your interpretations of Bach’s WTC is really lovely. Great cinematography as well!
👍👍👍👍
Can't believe I never commented on this despite it being one of my favourites! This is such a dreamy and gentle arrangement, and the sepia tone of the video compliments the wistful but warm-hearted mood of the piece. 💕
you're certainly a great musician sir! love the angle, too!
@@DarjanBar thanks so much Darjan, much appreciated!
For some reason this gives me flashbacks to my dad playing piano in the hallway when I was a kid. Don't know if he ever played this piece, but maybe some Christmas songs with similar chords? It's a random but oddly specific positive nostalgic memory, haha. Anyway, it's beautiful! Loving those harmonies.
