I grew up with a narcissistic father. He would be angry regularly, whereas it was never ever ok for me to be angry. He would never approach me after a row to say sorry, he'd rather just pretend nothing happened. I don't think I've ever witnessed him apologising for anything to anyone ever. I'm 34 now and I don't know how to be angry, assert myself, or confront others. I love your podcast, it'd be great if you could do episodes about narcissism, growing up in narcissistic or otherwise immature family systems, and the endless related themes - with some attention to what if any role psychedelic therapy could play in remedying such problems. Kind regards from Norway.

They completely took any meaning and joy out of my life, I just can't integrate what I experienced. There's lots of pro psychadelic folks in the community that won't hear a bad word said about it, but be careful people...I am writing this to warn people because I have only recently decided I can't live like this anymore and have made the decision to end my life. First, Steve, this made my whole day hearing your voice. My brother is friends with Dr Robison's brother. I got sent the link, opened it up. Laying on my back doing my old man stretches on the floor. Listening only, i almost instantaneously knew you were the other Podcaster. I haven't seen you since 2006. Your work and content did not surprise me in the least. I've always thought extremely high of you. Your ability to connect with others, bridging and making meaningful heartfelt connections across all and any cohort. I always saw a genuine, kind, intellectual, spiritual, and super athletic over 30 looking high schooler. Kind and sincere with everyone you came in contact with. All this and only a high schooler. To have expected less than greatness from you, would be a fools bet. I appreciated the outlier example of the FDA acting on behalf of the people profess to protect. My uncle was the expert cardiologist used to testify in the class action lawsuit against fen phen. The drug was withdrawn and $13 billion in damages awarded. They might as well flip a coin each time an application is submitted. Happy to have discovered the podcast. Already subscribed. Greetings from Costa Rica

Ryan! I'm so deeply moved by this. You're gonna make me cry big manly tears. I'm humbled by and thankful your kind words. The "over 30 looking high schooler" piece was particularly accurate. When I showed my yearbook picture to my teenage son he was like, "bro why do you look like a grown-ass man?" It's wild to think how much has changed since we were fumbling our way through high school. It's hard to really appreciate the impact we have on each other, especially in those formative years. Every memory I have of you is a good one. You were the kind of guy I felt like I could be myself around. Accepting, authentic, playful, funny, and the perfect amount teenage rebellion. Hope life is treating you well down there in Costa Rica!

I didn’t really finish the episode yet, maybe because I’m distracted by what’s going wrong. Hope both of you are ok and not facing any trouble. However I was thinking to put this suggestion here. I really don’t think bringing your patients as an example in the show is a great idea. I’m saying this because I can sense how intelligent both of you are to overcome such way in order for your audience to understand or absorb your ideas. Even if you got their consent at the end their consent don’t really count 100% in such case and there is a whole conversation can be done to explain way. Finally, thank you both so much for being the therapists I’ve been always looking for. You will never have an idea how you made me understand all what I encountered and what was going on with me. May all of the team of this show live in peace ever after.

At 26:02 you disapproved of methamphetamine being in Adderall in Mexico. I would agree that the quality control in Mexico may suck but Dr. Carl Hart of Colombia University says that after thousands of experiments his study participants couldn't tell the difference. So he concluded that they were essentially the same drug except meth lasts a bit longer. I've always been taught more bang for your buck is a good thing. But yes Mexico should do better quality control and sell what they advertise.

A bundle of good advice and helpful thoughts, thank you! Just one thing got me thinking, which is if it really is a good thing to “shelve” challenging trips. In my experience psychedelic trips don’t age well. And they not only give you what you need, they are also tailored to fit your psychological/mental abilities at the time for processing them - but this is more of an intuition than a scientific fact. The trouble with not processing them while fresh on your mind is that we tend to lose the feeling of urgency and - especially for very challenging or even painful trips - avoid going there again emotionally or mentally at later times. They do infiltrate into your unconscious mind or into your dreams, though, and do what they do without you actively processing them. Or they start to “rot” and infect other parts of your psyche. And one more thought on this from a spiritual perspective: Maybe the “lesson” of a challenging trip is not a wisdom, but an improved skill, even though you went into it with the intention of getting answers. So there may just be nothing to integrate (just to acknowledge). We are all here for a reason, it's not so much about us. Let's just let the universe play itself out through us. 🙂
