We were here in mid February 2024. Come along to explore Mariscal Mines, located deep within the Chihuahuan Desert, Big Bend National Park. You must travel about 22 miles down River Rd to access the mines. River Rd is a rugged unpaved road, a high clearance vehicle is recommended. These mines were in operation from 1900 to approximately 1943.

    Each site is equipped with cable still. WI-FI is available only at the bathhouses. Laundry at both bath houses.

    This campground is terrible. I camped at site 3, and we were smelling the pit toilet all night. I’ll never camp here again.

      @@bikeflu sorry you had a bad time there, we loved our time there, and didn’t smell anything from the pit toilets, but we usually camp these places in the winter when it’s basically empty. Most of these government-run primitive campgrounds have pit toilets, so that might be kind of hard to avoid. Maybe try DeSoto Falls campground in Cleveland, sites 14 &15 are creekside, but much further away from pit toilets.

    Good information. A good campground map would be helpful to know which entrance to use so it would be easy to back your trailer. Is there firewood available for purchase nearby or do you gather your own .

      @@steventhomas7504 thank you for the feedback, I’ll try to include maps for future campgrounds. Lots of local small businesses and residents sell firewood around this campground, so we just purchased wood from them. Most of them were only charging about 5$ for a reasonable sized bundle.

    Great exploration Ruins should be protected with a sealer to prevent erosion. They won't be around too long if they are not protected 😢

      @@Sisterg618 . Thanks but no, as I stated in my description, the whole point of this video was to show the initial setup and first thoughts. And at no point was I confused, I started assembling the tent immediately out of the box, as I stated in the video, it’s not rocket science, simply a matter of taking your time to the thread the poles, which takes a little longer when you’re working alone.

    Me and my wife stayed at Hamilton Branch State Park in Plum Branch South Carolina. It's on the same lake and the sites are spacious with water access. I believe I saw a sign for Winfield when we crossed the dam going into Georgia to check out another SP that was like an RV resort but it was a SP!! Gonna put this on my CG list. I'm in Apex,NC Site 54 was Da Bomb!!

    Don't go to Cottonwood, its dry and desolate there. Rio Grande Village is green and not dusty, not to mention that you can go to the grocery store onsite and get a cell signal. No amenities at all there.

      @@theunknowntinman different strokes for different folks. I actually hated Rio Grande village, it was too crowded and busy for my liking. My favorite was the secluded backcountry site Hannold Draw, followed by Cottonwood campground second.

    I appreciate the walk through tour. I live about 30 minutes from there and I grew up with Dad launching the boat at Doll Mtn. That was long before the campground. A few years ago I stopped in while on the way to Ellijay. I asked the camp host if I could do a drive through so I would know which sites I might like to book. I was turned away.

      @ I only lived in the city parts, which was Broken Arrow and Tulsa. They’re quite like Hickory and Charlotte (but way bigger), respectively. Though I did live there for seven years, I never did hear of anywhere that would make good spots. Just imagine a bare, flat landscape and VERY few trees. In short, my personal opinion is to not go if you still prefer forest settings.

      @@CanadianJaze . While it may not be the correct way, I actually prefer it like this. Now that I’ve had the opportunity to camp with it more, this way suits me best. I like not stepping directly into the main body of the tent as I get out of bed, this gives me a small corridor to step into instead. It feels more spacious and creates more separation between my living & sleeping quarters. And it doesn’t adversely effect the weather tightness at all. I recently camped during a storm in the Nantahala forest, and absolutely no rain got in. It’s working well for me, I got no complaints.

      @@hrobledo . The tent holds up great to bad weather. I went camping in the Nantahala National Forest for 4 days and a storm came through . Absolutely no problems with the wind and rain. Unfortunately my SD card got corrupted and all the images were lost, so there won’t be a video about that camping trip. As much as I appreciate how well it did in the storm, I will be looking for a new SUV tent. The complete lack of windows with this tent is not something I can deal with. The only way to get fresh air in is to leave the front door unzipped, or completely remove the rain fly, not ideal.

      @ . I’ve only done that once actually, in a park in Texas, I don’t remember which one now. Unfortunately I haven’t encountered many parks that offer screened shelters in my neck of the woods. But maybe I just haven’t looked for them. I usually just tent or car camp when it’s not feasible to drag along my travel trailer, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled for more screened shelter opportunities, that would be incredibly convenient.

    We use to go there all the time. Every month, sometimes twice, but when they put up the sll night sodium vapor lights, We quit. Too much like a Wal Mart parking lot all night long. Found some other campsites that are better. Beautiful area to visit. We have been staying at Cherokee Rock City. No lights, hot water showers, I mean hot. Great. Everyone loves it. A much younger crowd to be around. Rock climbing and adventure trails.

    There are NO good campsites in Vogel, the most overrated park ever. Too many dogs, too many unsupervised kids, too much noise, sites much too close together, no views of any kind from the sites.

      @@harrg2615 well, I finally had some sunshine today. I tried the scenario and got zero watts coming in. That being said my front windshield is tinted overall & has an extra dark UV strip at the top border, and the rest of my windows have dark tint as well. So perhaps your results would be better if your windshield has less tint.

    What type of AC are you going to use?

      It’s just a little 5k btu window unit that I got from Walmart. I use it a lot in the summer when I tent camp, especially since it gets really hot in Georgia. It works pretty well .       Hi there, this was at a campground that had electricity available. But when we camp off- grid we use solar panels to keep our GRECELL power boxes charged, these power boxes keep our phones, tv, small electronics powered. Then we have a 4500 watt Champion generator if we need to power the refrigerator, AC, and microwave. The generator alone could power everything in the tent on it’s own easily, but we try to minimize generator use.

    I think you may need to back the car up a bit closer to the tent? Good job! I had a hard time putting up my truck bed tent up with the instructions & an expert camper to help!

      @@outdoormary It was so hard to figure out and put up. I haven't tried it since that first time. I plan on using it in March though. Wish me luck. You did such a great job without instructions!
