the trades aren't for everyone, but they are a decent way to make a good living, this video is kind of a rant but I cover a few different topics related to the trades.

i’m about to take the test for 597, any advice on studying the mechanical comprehension section?
It’s like 4400-4700 month for me I’m on my 6th year
I appreciate this video a LOT. Great stuff man. Question for you though… I’m about to start a mobile welding business in 2 months time and I was gonna ask what type of work to expect from this? What type of things would I be welding?
You mentioned this is side work for you what is your main occupation?
Is this 60 take home?
nice, is this business additional to your union job?
Love the video. I’m 40 looking for a new line of work and wanting to learn a trade. I know I’m late with no experience but going to try and join the local union. Loved the video
@@kellenking5108 thank you and good luck
What local are you out of?
597 area Chicago. But I work in house at a company as a steamfitter so my wage is a bit lower than the outside. But I get PTO etc
I called burlingame California pay for journeyman 83.75 per hour
No that’s including benefits and that It’s only like 35-40 $ hr
Thanks for the info
As an industrial electrician it’s very interesting to see this type of pipe fitting, very interesting other points of LOTO/isolation
@@vagosaur5251 yeah I don’t know much about electrical but I appreciate what you guys do!
Hey, what’s up brother? May I ask you one question real quick? What kind of business license do you need ? What type ?
You should have a LLC. There’s tons of different types of ways to form a business. But liability insurance and make sure you’re paying taxes is important.
@@bluecollarsuccess7196 thanks bruh
Iv been on the hunt for good quoting techniques, I don’t work for myself. But a pretty decent size dredging company I was a jam up hand that was smart and they gave a shot , iv been doing well but some of your principles have definitely helped me thanks again bro!!!
soubnds like 90 hrs a week... that not really a life style. thats slavery
Yeah I did it for a year or so then I got burned out you’re totally right. I saved a lot of that money I made and invested it. I work 40-50 hours a week now but I’m much less excited about OT. Thanks for the comment!
How long does it take to become a journeyman? I thought it was like 5 years
Depends on the local 4-5 years
Oh ok
I’m located in garner NC and I’m currently a diesel technician. How much can someone make starting as a pipe fitter ? And are they giving OT ?
Pre apprentices in my area start off around 21$ an hour cap out over 60$
@@bluecollarsuccess7196 Little Rock Arkansas starts at 24.00 as of 2024
how much were you getting paid starting off on the apprenticeship? My local claims 25 an hour and 40 by the 5th year.
As an apprentice I started off at like 17$/hour journeyman wage was close to 60$
How much does a foreman make? How long will you be a journeyman before becoming a foreman?
It all depends, but generally foreman is 10-15% extra added to journeyman scale hourly rate.
Was that a check with over time or without? One guy on youtube said he made 110k after taxes as a journeyman with over time 175000 before taxes etc
It was with moderate overtime. My last check was even more because I worked an extra 16 hours. I on average make over 120k/year gross. With OT. I don’t get laid off and work consistently throughout the year even if there’s not much OT.
When is taxes considered legal ? Taxes and insurance are financial. Unless you consider it is legally required to have liability insurance.
Did you travel the year you made 110k? Any per diem?
No travel just night shift work and a lot of OT
@@bluecollarsuccess7196 thanks for answering
Did you get laid off during apprenticeship?
@@amonicawarren4148 once during Covid. I stayed busy from then on
Ok cool
Im applying for a pipe fitter apprenticeship next week any good advice ?
Show up early, work hard, be careful who you trust, learn all you can, ask questions, don’t do anything you don’t feel safe or comfortable doing. Don’t be afraid to try new things and volunteer for overtime. Good luck 👍
Im applying for a pipefitter apprenticeship next week any advice ?😊
There will always be desperate immigrants willing to work for less 😅 Wages never increase in skilled trades. Their wages are stuck in the 1980’s. Skilled trades companies will die out because of their mental challenges 😂
That’s simply not true especially for electricians, Pipefitters, plumbers elevator techs etc.
Maybe for general labor. Union wages for Pipefitters in my area are 60$ an hour. How have they not gone up provide proof for this for union jobs. When I started wages for 48.67$/hour for Pipefitters now 60$
@@bluecollarsuccess7196 StatsCanada, the Toronto Star, CBC all have articles describing wage stagnation for skilled trades workers in Canada. Wages in Canada’s skilled trades have only grown by 17% since 1970, while inflation has increased the prices of everything 400% Real wages are decreasing each year in Canada, even if the dollar amount looks like it is increasing. I am a red seal journeyman plumber and journeyman class b gasfitter with a blue seal. Canada’s version of a master plumber.. But I now refuse to work in my trades after my occupation made me permanently disabled and WCB denied all of my workplace injury claims. Good luck to anyone who does physical work in Canada 😢 Stay in school kids! Skilled trades are not an alternative to college..
You are doing great Brother! Keep up the great videos!
Thanks! Will do!
Thanks for this information
I just moved to Arizona have been in retail B2b sales some high end real estate CRM STUFF and roughly 12hrs shift BUT I NEED A CHANGE AT 36 and need stability what would you recommend My job pays for school 6k tuition but not sure what to use it on at this juncture while also taking care of a parent ..
What’re you interests? Do you enjoy working with your hands, dealing with people, working alone? It’s tough I do 12 hour days right now nights. 6pm-6am. But it’s only temporary. Sometimes you don’t always follow your passion but follow the jobs no one wants to do but pay really well. Plumbing pipefitting etc are hard jobs but pay well and no one wants to go into them.

Great video
I think it is time to do your own welding full time. If you extrapolate your part time income you would be making significantly more running your own business.
Yes i agree it's difficult and a little intimidating making the jump to be honest. but i think you're right
Not one video of you welding anything.
Dude you're not no f****** welder
nice video
Thank for sharing this information. its helpe alot of people like me who have to bring in extra money in even while working full time.
What is your full time job?
You should do a truck tour plzzzz on your side job
Saw this come across my feed and I said, “What? ‘Legal costs’?” Ahhhh… ok. Here’s a tip; do not register with an LLC. Unless you are a Real Estate Holding Co., Incorporating has huge benefits. You cannot take dividends or distributions with a LLC. That means you are supposed to pay income tax and self employment tax on every penny you make.
Thanks man. Appreciate the vid
this applies to any service business. I'm a plumber and this totally makes sense. I believe these times are going to get wayyyy worse. we will see!
I want to get into plumbing just graduated high school, playing video games is getting boring, and I want something more. any tips?
good advice, i actually can put these tips into use. Sucks you left your business behind, but i get it . and i wish you the best.
Good video. Enjoyed the tips. Appreciate it 😊
Thanks for your time
Great info budd

What year is your ford diesel in the thumbnail? Do you write lots off at tax time.
I'm getting my mobile welding business up and running and was wondering what kind of jobs I should gear up for. I'm TIG, MIG, stick experienced so not much is off limits just not sure right now what the most common work is like for this type of business.
Try to niche down to something just my personal opinion. Such as piping, heavy equipment repair or structural etc.
Hello! I’m thinking about being a apprentice. I just got offered but I had a question. During apprenticeship I have to stay in that stay or can I move? I was planning on moving to Georgia next year. Does my time transfer over? How does that worl
Usually you have to stay in that area, if it’s the United association you may be able to transfer locals but it all depends. You should probably plan on trying to stay in the area your whole apprenticeship. Then when you’re a journeyman you can pretty much move anywhere.
@@bluecollarsuccess7196 it’s actually is the United association! They asked me to come in Monday. It’s in Metairie Louisiana but I wanted to move to Georgia to be closer to my gf. What do you think I should do? Just join the one right now and see if I can transfer or wait until I move ? Or just do the 5 years here. Sorry if this got personal
@Asher Johnson If it were me I would get in now make it to your 2nd or 3rd year in your apprenticeship then ask for a transfer. So you can be closer to your gf
Have you considered paid ads on google?
Yes I have. But I haven’t gone through with it yet.
@@bluecollarsuccess7196 Don't. I provide google ads full-time (expert ads is a complicated thing, but usually worth it). I'm trying it out with welding client for the first time. I can let you know what we find out the first month if you want. If it works for him, I'll help you out too, of course.
@@i8tweak so how did it go?
@@anthonypower457 It worked out really well! Took a lot of tweaking, but i have 5 welding businesses I do ads for now. All very happy.
