monome norns here/there script revisited "Found"
It seems like having the microphones closer to the guitar makes it easier for the script's pitch detection, resulting in less jarring drones. Saying that, this was my second attempt - the first one had a really ear-splitting tone generated halfway through, spoiling it somewhat. I love that this script can turn on you in an instant - makes improvising rather nerve-wracking.

Adaptation of Eno's ambient process on acoustic - Norns OOOOOO script
มุมมอง 9542 ปีที่แล้ว
I read an article about how Brian Eno used loops of differing lengths to compose Music for Airports, so I thought I'd give it a try with the OOOOOO script. I then got itchy and started improvising poorly over the top.

using the oooooo script again. this time I used my old, much-maligned ebow.

My woman makes me pack away all my toys afterwards!
The music video brilliantly captures the essence of transformation and the power of change. Its core message, that the only way to achieve different results is by doing different things, is both poignant and inspiring. The visuals perfectly complement the lyrics, portraying a journey of self-discovery and the courage to break free from old patterns.
another great video... I like these series...
I really like the way you combine organic sounds with monome stuff... It´s one of the most inspiring things I've done... (to buy them)
wonderful
Can't found "Found" script in the norns comunity scripts
Ahh sorry for the confusion. The script is called "here/there." The music piece is called "Found."
how are you mic-ing the guitar? Sounds wonderful. (side question - how do you like the yamaha fg 200?)
Really cool stuff
Breathtakingly beautiful! Thank you for the explanation and the experiment! ❤
Thank you for the lovely words!
I like to pretend that I possess intelligence. Bu tit seriously took me a minute to realize what is happening. Now I want to buy a guitar to run through my modular.
Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool album vibes here.
Oh god that's made my day. Even if it's in the "ugly cousin twice removed" category of comparisons, I'll gladly take it. That album is mindblowing. The little warbly synth melody that comes in halfway through Daydreaming is one of my favourite Radiohead moments ever.
Ooooo indeed
What is that controller with knobs?
That's a DIY controller from a project on the Lines forum. It's my variation of the "Bleached" controller with two extra knobs, named "Bleached++" You can find the files etc on my github here: github.com/ramphands/bleachedplusplus Sadly, Teensy boards are really scarce at the moment.
those cables are 💯!!! did you make them???
Yeah they're DIY jobbers. I forget which wire I used (26awg 4 core?) but I used some cheap AliEx "gold" plated connectors, some cotton tubing and a bit of super thick 1:4 white heatshrink. They've stood up really well, happily!
@@neilmoffat its the cotton tubing which really sets off the aesthetic! everything looks perfect!
Love this. Can you live loop with OOOOOO? Or do you have to record in first? Also, random question, but where did you get the case for your Norns? Always looking :-)
Thanks for listening! Yeah this is all done live - this particular version has all six loops constantly recording and glitching around. You can think of it more like a really glitchy random delay in that there are no clear "loops" - sounds sometimes come back in a normal way, but often they just spin out in cobwebs of sound. In my Brian Eno ripoff video, I'm using OOOOOO as much more of a standard looper, albeit with all six loops being unsynchronised and of varying lengths so the recorded notes overlap in new patterns each time round. The case is a DIY job, same as the midi controller sitting in front of it. If you're on the Lines forum, you can see it here: llllllll.co/t/norns-shield-case-designs/30347/369
Really nice! May I ask, what is the controller under the Norns?
Thank you! The controller is my slight modification of the "Bleached" controller from the lines forum. You can find the original project here llllllll.co/t/bleached-diy-midi-controller/33786 My version is on github here: github.com/ramphands/bleachedplusplus Sadly, it uses a Teensy 3.2 or Teensy LC, both of which are rather hard to come by at present. Hope that helps - if you have any other questions about it, let me know!
Here-There works so well with acoustic input, especially with input with a longer decay period, I find, and your videos are clear proof of that. I've used it with synth sources and I find the results less satisfying. Once I can master lua (ha!) I'd love to fork this script to maybe add some additional controllable interactions/Paramus, though. I think there's something so great about the potential for the input in the script to produce something you weren't expecting but it can be somewhat chaotic and I think having another version where you can have a little more control over the output would be rewarding.
Yeah totally agree about using it with "pure" inputs like synths not being as rewarding. It ends up just being more of an auto-accompaniment generator as the tones match too well. I love that an acoustic input usually registers a few different times at slightly different frequencies, resulting in those more ethereal drones. One thing I'd love the script to be able to do is limit the range of frequencies. I'd chop all the ones which exist in the "smoke detector" range, haha.
@@neilmoffat Good idea! That would allow for more focused drones while still allowing for unexpected results.
Really really nice, loved when u stopped at the end and just left the script to do its thing ahah curious as to ur thoughts on ur playing style for these pieces. I notice it’s usually very sparse w guitar - is that just the way u play or that norns brings so much sound you don’t want to give it much information ?
Thank you for the lovely message! So my general approach with this particular script is to improvise around a scale until the drones kick in. Sometimes they start quickly (as in this video) and sometimes they can take a good minute or so. Anyway, once the drones start, that lets me know where I can go in relation to the starting notes. I try to pull or push the drones higher or lower by playing correspondingly on the neck. This script does need quite a bit of space for the note tracking to work, but once it's fairly established, I can start playing arpeggiated figures and melody lines. You're right on both counts about the sparseness, though - I generally play fairly sparsely even without any processing, but with Norns I tend to play even more that way. A mix of understated on purpose and understated due to fear of hitting some heinous bum notes.
@@neilmoffat ahah the heinous bum notes are always a threat with long sustaiing effects and modules, looking forward to hearing more :)
Wow beautifully played, this script sounds very interesting, will check it out, thanks for the inspiration! 🙏
Thanks a lot! It's certainly a great script for anyone looking to make ambient music. You just have to be careful not to feed in any discordant sounds while it's generating its pitch bank, otherwise you can get some rather piercing "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" tones.
@@neilmoffat No problem! Great to know, it seems to respond very nicely to distant notes rather than chordal playing, might give it a go tonight! EEEEEEEEEE tones, love it haha
So so good! 💯🔥
So kind of you to say. Thanks for giving it a listen!
Superr nice track, inspired!
It's my favourite of the things I've uploaded, I think. Thanks for listening!
Reminds me of chase bliss pedals right on man awesome stuff
Yeah, I've not played their pedals but I've seen the Knobs demos - indeed there are some very similar things going on. Thanks for listening!
Ya keep it up will scribe to you. What norns do you have? Is that the shield? If so what is your honest opinion? Does it get a lot of use or not? I have heard mixed opinions. Some say amazing and some say it has some good scripts but not a lot of useful sound for making tracks, its just fun for noodling? I also wondered what the learning curve is on it as ive read mixed opinions. Thanks and keep it up.
Grids + Rings + Warps ?? it sounds cinematic! Also elements clone! beautiful sounds on your rack!
thanks for the mic pre recommendation !!
You're welcome. If you do build it, the standard version is much easier than the tiny version. It truly is tiny!
really experimental!
I like so much the use of Norns and Grid with acoustic instruments!
Me too - there's something really special about processing acoustic instruments in a clearly digital way. Thanks for the kind comments!
I love oooooo and I’ve been thinking about putting my guitar through it for awhile. This is such a nice use of it. How are you configuring the loops in this session?
If I remember correctly, I had the script set to the delay mode, but the global tempo set to 10. Either that or the tempo was the default 90 but I set the loop lengths short. Either way, a couple of seconds max of delay time with some randomisation of the settings every few bars. I think that's a setting in the "all loops" submenu.
Hey, that is beautiful, thank you for sharing. Where did you get these beautiful USB cables? Perfect match for shield/norns :-)
Thank you very much! The cables are DIYed (very much my thing) but you could get the same result just using the cotton tubing and capping it with some white heatshrink. You can get the tubing here: www.aliexpress.com/item/4000270612038.html Heatshrink will need to cover the USB cables so should be sized appropriately. 3:1 heatshrink will give a better (tighter) fit which will hold up a bit better than standard 2:1 stuff. Hope that helps!
"an shifting collection" Oh dear oh dear.
Sublime as always
Aww you're too kind!
Please keep these videos coming. They are inspired.
Thank you so much! My work rate is... slow, to say the least.
amazing stuff really enjoying all your work - slightly reminiscent of branko mataja's guitar music
Wow that's so kind of you to say. Thank you!
Great jam man.
Thank you so much!
Sublime
this is great!
Thank you very much!
Music sounds beautiful <3 What is that nifty looking knob controller for norns btw?
Looks like a 17 DIY Teensy split in half.
Thank you! The controller is my variation of the Bleached midi controller from the Lines forum: llllllll.co/t/bleached-diy-midi-controller/33786 You can find all the resources to build your own on my Github here: github.com/ramphands/bleachedplusplus
That is so good! Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for the lovely comment!
Lovely sounds thanks for sharing. I've not tried here/there on my norns and so it's not obvious to me what sounds are your live guitar and what sounds are generated. I'll have to give it a try next time that I get a chance!
Thanks! The live guitar is present throughout, but snips of it get randomly looped/shifted/reversed. I'd say prior to the sinewaves kicking in, it's about 60/40 between live and the buffered stuff. I'm basically trying to just pick spaces between where I expect sounds to come in, or to accompany them if I manage to play in time. Once the sines start, I know that the script has filled its note allocation for tone generation, so I switch to playing small repeated figures in the hope that the script will follow my lead. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it wants to play a really jarring note. I think that's a side effect of me micing fairly distantly and getting in a lot of seat squeaks, scrapes and ambient sounds which throw off the algorithm. If I were playing for a performance, I'd probably mic the guitar much more closely so as to avoid any of the sudden BEEEEEEEEEE sounds.
@@neilmoffat thanks for the info. Sounds like a lot of fun, will have to give it a try. I particularly like the idea of feeding the algorythm, then once it has enough sound/data to do its thing, then holding back and filling in gaps so that it's like a duet of sorts. I have had a lot of fun with that kind of approach with Compass.
@@dancoffeyuk Actually I haven't tried compass! When I first got the Norns I loaded a billion scripts onto it then ended up overwhelmed. Now I've been slowly picking my way through the scripts and seeing if they're suited to me. I really love the recent video series by Peter Bark on YT for highlighting scripts I may not have otherwise explored. Fall is a great one - I had no idea it also processed incoming audio until I saw the video tutorial on it a few weeks back. I edited the script in Maiden to add in a whole heap of scales, then I just hit go and play along with whatever is generated.
Very nice!
Thanks!
Another beautiful patch. Is it a sample?
Thank you very much! No, no samples. Bass is from the Plaits module on the right. Background drone is from the Braids module, and the main sound is the Rings module running an alt. firmware which incorporates some elements of the Elements module. I believe this patch used the "blow" exciter sound instead of the usual internal signal generated by Rings.
Beautiful patch!! Really gorgeous!
Thanks a lot. I've been spending more and more time just playing my acoustic into Norns these days. It's a totally new world for me, so it's all rather inspiring (and overwhelming)!
