    They know nothing except what they've read on Wikipedia and uniformed articles written long after the event. I was a regular at the Catacombs before Wigan even opened, but was into what became known as "Northern Soul" before it's name caught on (coined c.1970, but not widely adopted until around 1972.) We just called it "Rare Soul". Older fans around in the late '60s sometimes called it "Rhythm & Soul". Obscure uptempo Soul music to dance to, as opposed to pop-chart rubbish. The Bruce Lee story is absolute RUBBISH. Baggy trousers (and badges) actually went out of fashion in 1974(!) Nobody told Wigan latecomers many of whom we regarded as little better than "divs" - ie. pop and rock fans. The actual "Golden Age" of NS was 1970-1974. Paul Mason is an idiot who barely scratched the surface. Records by The Fi-Dels, Bobby McClure, Salvadors, Major Lance, Hoagy Lands, Yum Yums, Jerry Cook, Jackie Lee, Thelma Lindsey, Del-Larks, Saxie Russell, Earl Jackson, Bob Relf, Vel-Vets etc. etc... That is Northern Soul. The rest is selective psychobabble.

      My recollections are similar to yours but do differ slightly. I knew Keb slightly at Wigan and yes I think he turned up mid-70's. I knew him as I used to sell records there. I know him quite well now through Guy Hennigan who's a good mate of mine. Keb was certainly influenced by Bruce but generally the more athletic style of dancing was around at my youth club in late 60's with backdrops and spins and there when I started to frequent soul clubs in the Manchester area. I never went to the Wheel as I was at school doing A-levels and had strict parents. However there were local evening do's at the Moon [Duckinfield], Birdcage [Ashton], Poco-Poco [Stockport], Pendulum [Manchester] where the Wheel guys would go and the music was the same. Running from '69-'71 apart from Pendulum which carried on into the NS era having moved from Hardman St to the MSG. I'm not sure what we called the clubs/music until NS term was coined. I didn't get to the Catacombs but from what I've gathered it was similar to the Pendulum. Current plays on US labels rather than staple fare and early NS re-issues. Main dj at the Pendulum was Barry Tasker whose records came mostly I think via Brian Phillips who was an outlet for Martin Koppell. To give you an idea I heard and bought Mamie Galore [SACK] and Joseph Moore [Mar-V-Lus] there . About £4 each in '72. And you had quite a few shops full of US imports in the area where you could pick up NS 45s. Global Records, Tibb St, and NRS. NRS had loads of Chess, Philips 45s. Ronnie Walker, Charles Wright, Millionaires in quantity for 10p back in 1970. Tibb St just had oddball US 45s. No idea where he got them from as he wasn't a specialist soul dealer. I picked up the odd 45 there but there were lots of guys looking beside myself. Myself and a couple of mates did eventually get into his warehouse in Ashton sometime 76/77. 45 copies of Lenny Curtis and a Velvet Satins I remember so God knows what he'd had and sold in the early 70's. As for "divs" I had a pair of Spencers but I think it was later than '74. I didn't have the beer towel and badges so only a minor fashion faux-pas. I kinda divided people by what 45s they bought and if they were Mr M's or main room attendees. You couldn't really judge from clothing. I'm still going and collecting. I've got 7 of those 45s you mention on US originals in minty condition. And I've had the rest except one over the years, some in quantity. Never had the Del-Larks but one Sunday night at the Pendulum around '72 I was sat with a guy looking at records and he shows me the Del-Larks. Had I heard it ? No ? it's OK - £1. Looks like a doo-wop 45. Never bought it.

    The 'record shop owner' mentioned was the Blues & Soul critic Dave Godin whose support and commentary played a significant role in the development of the Northern scene. This podcast is exactly what I'd hoped to avoid. It's a dissection that attempts to capture what the Northern Scene was about but fails to identify that there was so much more about this scene and the love of genuinely great music. Of course there was a 'pop' element to some of the music, inevitable I suppose, but once you begin to explore the roots of this scene then it's clear that there was a sincere love for the music of Black America.........oh, and as for the Bruce Lee reference, what planet are the commentators on? An erroneous inclusion that only someone who never experienced the Northern scene might imagine had value.....trust me, it didn't!

    Bruce Lee had nothing to do with the dancing. Niters were fueled by amphetamines, AKA - gear, whizz , speed . Yes!!, illegal drugs & the scene would not have been the same without it. Nobody in the history of NS, has ever had vocal fry , it was banned [ until now]. Don`t believe anything the BBC says, they are clueless middle class , dinner party wafflecocks. You both sound like you should be selling furniture on a shopping channel .

    The dance moves were influenced by visiting American soul acts, such as Jackie Wilson and James Brown, not Bruce Lee movies. The Northern soul scene started in 1967 at the Twisted Wheel Manchester, and the Bruce Lee movies were released in the 1970s.

    • @rodshard8605
      @rodshard8605 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'd agree with that in the main but doesn't Keb Darge mention Bruce Lee influence in his dancing style. Perhaps some of those who got into it later in the 70's copied the odd Bruce move. But as you said the dancing was athletic long before those movies came out and before it was even termed NS.

    • @Keepingthefaith72
      @Keepingthefaith72 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@rodshard8605 Hi Rod, Keb Darge was 10 when the Northern Soul scene started at the Twisted Wheel in 1967 and the basic dance moves were well established before he came onto the Northern Soul scene. That's not to say he wasn't influenced by Martial arts films when he started dancing. But that was just Keb Darge not the scene as a whole ......

      @@Keepingthefaith72 Agree. I was influenced [68/69 ] by watching the slightly older guys. My wife says I'm Ginger Rogers to her Fred Astaire, which I think is some kind of compliment. Though at 72 now I'm less Astaire and more a stair lift.

Ive been doing it all of my life, been to all the clubs, dj'd all over the uk, Germany,France,Austria, and many times in the USA, mainly in and around the Pittsburgh area. One sentence to me describes the northern soul scene. A very close freind of Jamaican descent said to me..."once you've been to it, you can't get away from it, its in your blood, and the people you know are your friends for life"..

    I remember in the late 70s seeing New York B-boys and b-girls busting moves to a looped break for the first time and thinking wow ! , here are people on the other side of the world doing Northern Soul dance moves to a repeating break, and thinking , how cool is that. Then wondering if by chance an American tourists had been to an all-nighter, seen the dance moves and took the style back to New York. Who knows?. On our way to a all-nighter we would practice dance moves on the train station platform with northern soul played on a portable cassette player recorder whilst waiting for the train to where ever the all-nighter was we were going to. We'd get a crowd of travelers around watching us dance. One time as we gathered I things to board the train and women approached, she told me she was a choreographer and had a dance studio in London, gave me her card and said get in touch. Me being a ignorant working class boy didn't know what a choreographer was at the time lol. Oh well. That same cassette player recorder was then used to record live at the all-nighter. I used to have quite a collection recorded from various all-nighters across the country including the Wigan Casino. It sounds like a weird obsession to those not on the scene, but if you are on the Northern Soul scene you will get it, and see it as a perfectly normal thing to have done at the time. KTF!
