In this video I am preparing a board to make a 12x8 box. First step is to break the board down to manageable sizes. Then make a reference face and edge on the jointer. Next we use the planer to thickness the board. Finally we go the the table saw and rip to final width. I believe I have done this before on the channel but sadly I am selling my table saw and jointer. I just wanted to run through...

Ryobi 18V ONE drill & driver comparison...
Are you able to close the throat tight? I’ve tried moving the frog forward but the iron sticks out too much even in the fully retracted position.
Whats the attachment on the drill 😅
I bought the Number 4 plane and I guess I got luck that right out of the box it's performing really really well. I took it apart and cleaned the oil up and checked things. I ran a sharpie on the bottom and lapped it on my marble slab but it really didn't need much more than a few passes to get rid of the marker. I'll buy this one soon as well to add to the tool pile. I'm building an acoustic guitar this winter and I'm trying to find some good no fuss tools so I can focus on the build and not overcoming my junky tools.
I love the dowelmax jig and running out of dowels is my only issue. I ordered a lot more 3/8” than 1/2” and wish I had ordered more 1/2”. Right now, the best price I have seen for hardwood fluted dowels is $69 for 500. It’s about $20 for 100 because shipping is already added into the “free shipping “ price. I had to select the 500 count JAR, not a baggie. I can drop the link if you want
Just FYI, it says that your link is invalid on Amazon. I wonder if one of those pneumatic nail remover things would work to make a 3’ dowel. Straight line force without hammering.
Great video! Thx!
Be careful - the one I purchased lasted 45 minutes and died.
I just picked one of these up a few weeks ago for $55... A week later with the 20% off coupon I could have had it for $52. From what I've seen so far this vise seems like quite the bargain in the $50-$55 range. FYI no installation hardware comes with the vise, which stinks. I picked up some 1/2" lag screws, probably overkill, but it was too large for the holes. I thought about reaming out the holes but my luck would be that I'd crack the casting and lose the 90 day warranty and my $55. I will buy some 3/8" lag screws tomorrow and get his mounted up. I like your solution for putting a recess in the inner chop. I think I'll follow your lead and do the same thing.
20% of $55 is $11, not a $3 savings.
The vise is $65 regular price. I paid $55 during one of their promotions. A week later it was $52 after the 20% off coupon. $55 - $52 is a $3 difference.

Hi im in the same boat now to buy this. Known part is the machine cost. I have no 230v outlets. How much did the electrician putting it in cost? Would like to get an idea. Thanks
Well. I have a buddy that is an electrician so he charged $100 to do it. Sorry I'm not exactly sure what it would cost to have an electrician come and pay the normal fee. I would guess 300ish but that is a guess and the area you're in could change that. Thanks for watching
@@jldwoodworking thanks will get some quotes and update here if I can later.
What is all the hardware I need to purchase?
Basically 4 lag bolts. More than likely you will have screws to attach the face depending on what you do with it. I got 4 at I believe 2 1/2 inches. Thanks for watching.
I bought the 102 and the 65 1/2 over the course of the last year. I noticed something that could be a factor in why they aren't amazing. I think it comes down to the milling process. These planes were milled pretty decent, but because they were milled, there's no finesse to them. As the user, I think we need to take them that extra step further. Round the edges, file the adjuster screw a little as well as the receiver groove in the iron. And use the heck out of them. I bet that the No. 4 model suffers from this more, because it is the largest plane. Everything needs to be eased and finished so it feels like you've been using it for 20 years before it actually feels right. I've done some magic with my 102 and 65 1/2 and they do feel a lot nicer than when I bought them. They adjust easier and feel better in the hand. Just my observations. Something else I forgot to mention: The 102 would be great as a luthier's plane. Buy 2-3 of them and put cambered edges on them so they work well to carve instrument bodies. They're cheap enough that you wont break the bank, even if you bought several and did some adjustment on each one to do a specific task.
Thanks for the detailed response. I agree 100%. I am happy with all of them but am most impressed with the 60 1/2. Thanks for the reply and for watching.
Today's modern day 12V cordless tools are quite powerful and satisfy many types of work.
Agreed. I am still happy with this. 8t is the tool I keep on the house for the house type stuff. Works great. Thanks for watching.
Here is my example: Franklin Polypropylene 30" x16" tool cart is $109.00 that I have been wanting for a long time. I could be waiting forever for it to go on sale to everyday members for probably $89.00. However, Inside Track has it on sale this month of August for $74.95. That's a difference of $34.95. The $34.95 minus $29.00 membership is a plus $5.05 savings for me from the regular price. As you pointed out, I would be crazy to pass up paying for the Inside Track membership with the discounted price and $5.05 discount to boot from the regular price, and then enjoy the benefits of the membership for the following year. My only concern, and it is a funny one, is that I will now be encouraged to do impulse buying to save in the future. Like I joke with the folks down at my local Harbor Freight that is less than a mile away..."This is the only place I come to, where I go broke saving money." :) Thanks for the video jldwoodworking, and points well made.
I think it's more geared toward the hobby crowd. I'm a modeler and these would be great for those kind of tools.
Yup. I keep little parts on them now and really no tools. Thanks for watching.
i had a friend that put a crochet on his bench bull to do dovetail work. made loading and unloading the workpiece really quick. never did it myself but it looked effective. i use a moxxon vise that's just a couple boards held together with f-clamps and holdfasted to the bench. might revisit the bench bull idea and see if it's useful for me.
Thanks for the reply. I think you will be happier with the moxon to be honest. The bill is a great option when no vice is available. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video. I don't use dowels all the time, but buying this allows me to make hard to find dowels
Thanks for watching. I agree it gives you options. Good luck with it.
I bought one, it is ok. I took the spring off as it cants the chuck/drill bit towards the shaft with the spring as there is a bit of slop in the sleeves that ride up and down the shafts. I removed the two hard plastic sleaves from the chuck carrier and replaced them with a piece of ultra slippery Teflon PTFE 1/16" thick sheet (McMaster Carr part# 8545K13) that I rolled into a cylinder. To cut the strip uses the full height of the hard plastic insert to measure for the width of the strip and marked a line with a sharpie. Cut the strip off with sharp scissors. Then roll the end of the strip around one of the steel shafts(PTFE is soft) and mark the approximate length needed to make a complete cylinder, you will have to trim off tiny amounts of the length to get it to fit perfectly into the holes in the drill chuck carriage(it should be a tight fit), push the piece of PTFE all the way to the bottom, I needed to use the edge of a 3/8" dowel to to get the PTFE piece to bottom out. There is no need to reinstall the two screw they are not necessary as the Teflon fit it tight. All the slop is gone. Reassemble the drill guide and put a thin film of gun oil, 3 in 1 oil, synthetic motor oil, or the like on the steel shafts, it will be silky smooth and it will be an excellent tool. I would recommend mounting it to a 8" or 10" square base for stability. This is a light duty, hobbyist tool, do not expect to be drilling holes for pegging mortice and tenon joints in huge timbers.
Wow thanks for the excellent response. You should be doing TH-cam and filming that. Thanks for watching and the excellent response.
@@jldwoodworking I have thought about doing TH-cam, but more for travel vlogging. Maybe my channel could be home, travel, and woodworking content.

I was thinking if you could attached them to a wall they would be out of the way but easy access to the small stuff. Will the drawers Pull out all the way so you could access the back from inside to attach?
Hi, thnaks for watching and the reply. I believe they will pull out and allow you to mount them on the wall. I am currently movingand they are in storage so I can't put my hands on them. I would be cautiouse of how much weight youo put in them if you did this. I think putting them on a shelf might be better than hanging but it should work. Good luck with it.
It doesn't come with hardware. Nor do the instructions provide the dimensions of the hardware that you need to purchase.
Yea, haardware for vices I have discovered is not normally included. This does seem odd to me but it seems to be the norm. I am very happy with this vice and onvce I move I will be adding abother one to my new shop. Thanks for watching....
I see what you are doing, however you should put baking soda with the vinegar, the chemical reaction works much better, but thank you for bringing to me the easy fix
Thanks for the tip! And thanks for warning.
briangallop8946 Why would you soak them in vinegar (acetic acid) if you're just going to neutralize it with sodium bicarbonate?
@@POOKIE5592 Exactly there are too many know all who know f**kall! You only put use the bicarbonate after the vinegar treatment to neutralise the acidity!
@JLD Woodworking: Thank you very much, brother, for this really helpful video, especially user-friendly, for A newbie like me, who is looking for her first beginner orbital sander. You've had it for a year now, would you still recommend it?
Yes, it is working great for me. Thanks for watching....
First time to your channel. Seeing a real-world review from someone who is experienced with planes is kinda refreshing. Thank you. 2 questions. What material is the screw cap made of? And what kind od wood are the knob and tote made of. Again, thanks for a good reiew
Hi and thanks for the comments. I have to be honest I am moving now and the plane is in storage. From memory the cap is metal but I couldnt tell you what. No info on the web site. The tota and now are a hardwood. Probably beach or maple. Thanks for watching....
great information thanks,
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching....
Very helpful video. I had to go to Harbor Freight today to pick up a bunch of small items. Had never given serious consideration to joining Inside Track Club, but I saved almost the full cost ($30) of the 1-year membership just on the purchases I made today by doing so, and when the lady told me that it was only $15 extra to get the 2-year membership, I jumped at it. I do buy big items from time to time there so it will pay for itself. And since I moved, I am farther away from the nearest store now, by about 45 minutes, but I will probably start ordering things online from them now too, and I can use my membership for that as well. And with places like Amazon selling online almost everything I used to buy in stores, I figure I can order more from Harbor Freight as well.
Yes, I generally see that it pays for itself. Thanks for watching....
@@jldwoodworking Thank you! I decided to sign up and so far it seems to work for me. Went ahead and did the 2 years for $45. I actually saved just over $30 on the purchases I made that day and on my next subsequent visit saved around $15 bucks so yeah it paid for itself. And I do go there whenever I get a chance to, although it's about a 30-minute or so drive so it isn't something I do weekly, but I do enough business in a year's time there normally that I think it's a no-brainer. I am always buying tools and supplies, etc. And they are always coming out with new stuff I want anyway so it's win-win.
Hey great video. Would you be interested in showing the results of using the drill with hard wood?
Right now I am moving and the plate is in storage. Once I move Ill do this for you. Sorry for the delay. Thanks for watching...
@@jldwoodworking great looking forward to it.
How has this held up? I want to use this plate to make dowels out if hard wood like osage orange and black locust.
It is very solid. It will easily last my lifetime.
I have all three. The 102 and 60 1/2 are very good. The #4 worked well at the start, until the screw threads in the frog (the one that holds the lever cap) got stripped. Now unusable unfortunately.
Take it back to Lowes. They will replace it. Thanks for the comment and for watching....
@@jldwoodworking I live in Asia and its a long way to Lowes.
you can try either drilling it out and retapping it for a larger screw thread, there's plenty of meat in the casting to do that. you could also drill it out and put one of those threaded inserts for stripped metal threads. i don't know how well that one would work, but it might be okay. i have drilled out stanleys and epoxied a bit of rodstock into the hole and drilled and tapped that. it works pretty well, especially when you want to get the hole back to the original state. hope that was useful.
made in China .good
They are working for me....
Watched your videos on the Jorgensen planes and bought three of them this weekend. The short version is that I think these are very good planes and outstanding values. These are easy to set up and perform outstandingly well when properly set up. I’m not a huge O1 fan and I was skeptical about their Rc claims but after sharpening all three of the irons I will say that I believe their claims. The No. 4 iron in particular was very hard, enough that I wouldn’t be surprised if it chips (but it hasn’t yet). The feel of the tote on the No. 4 is better than many similar smoothers in production today. I really like the central rib they’re using to keep the frog aligned. The only thing I really don’t like, and for this quality at this price I wouldn’t let it keep me from buying (already done…) and using (will be doing) these planes.
Glad you like them and they are working for you. The price is right on these for sure. Thanks for watching....
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I'm just trying to learn and there is endless information out there. I like your approach, feels very down to earth.
Glad you like them and thanks for the kind words. Also thanks for watching and commenting....

Good luck with it. Thanks for watching...
So the 2A battery fully charged would be too small for this? For cutting 1x4 boards. I did 20 cuts and probably 18 I had to cut down through the board twice. Made lots of splinter too. Not sure what else would be wrong.
Hmm, Not 100% sure on the 2.0 batteries but I just put a 1.5 in the saw and it cut fine. Maybe an issue with your battery??? Hope it works oiut for you. Thanks for watching....
@jldwoodworking thanks for the lesson. You are charming and smart! Thanks for getting the warning out there. You are correct in saying the younger generation don't think about ergonomical issues. My suggestion for you is raise your entire work bench...the top of it should be at the top of your hip bone. If you raise it completely it will give you the opportunity for more storage underneath too!
Thanks for the reply. I have thought about different heights for the bench but I like it lower for hand planing so it is just a give and take. The Bull helps with some of the things I like a bit higher. Thanks for watching....
@@jldwoodworking what about adjustable legs?
can you use this vise without putting the wood inserts in?
I dont see why not. There would just be a. gap between the bench and the face of the vice. Good luck with it and thanks for watching....
This was really helpful. Thanks for all of your uploads, we’ve been binge watching lately!
Glad it helped and thanks for watching/binging :).......
Nice installation. I've just built a bench and that is the vice I will be installing as well. Also, you measured the clamp capacity at "5 1/2, would have rather had 6", the first thing I thought was, That's what she said. 😁 Have a good day.
Ha good one :).... Thanks for watching and good luck with the vice.
@@jldwoodworking I made the trip to HF yesterday and mounted the vice today. Then used it for a few things. Its going to be a game changer for me.
Your vise is too low! It should be flush with the tabletop so you can use that screwed notched feature to sandwich work pieces against a bench dog.
Thanks for the reply and yea you are right. I can just get the dog in the vice to work but it is too low.... Thanks for watching....
You can flip your tools and use a router and jigsaw making board set up. 🐊
thanks for the tip. I do have a dedicated router table but I admit I have put one upside down in the vice from time to time. Thanks for watching and the tip....
I picked up this saw off marketplace for cheap. I use a dewalt to ryobi battery adapter and it works perfectly fine. Use it for cordaround trim. I did put a 60 tooth diablo blade on it, and it cuts like butter. Beats dragging a 50ft extension cord up and down the stairs. My dewalt 5ah battery lasts all day pretty much. Good saw for the price.
