OFF GRID AL
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 1 เม.ย. 2021
Hello, My name is Allen English, I grew up loving the outdoors & going camping and fishing. I retired in 2021 and found 40 acres in the high desert of Washington State off the Canadian boarder that I am creating my own infrastructure and building a off grid Appalachian Dovetail Log Cabin to live in. Later I will be re-building a old log cabin that has collapsed down by the creek on my land. I am creating an orchard, building some solar systems for various areas and developing a spring for my water supply. Along my Off Grid self reliant journey I will be building a green house and creating a garden area.

Only I can get a Snowmobile stuck in the snow.. See you in 2025, Happy New Years.
About me (OFF GRID AL) I will be documenting my off grid cabin life and how I will make life as self reliant as possible. Hello my name is Allen English and I have always enjoyed the outdoors and retired at 58 to live my dream. Along with my cabin builds I will document some back packing and camping trips as well as fishing. Some of the ways I will do my builds will be old school, but with a mix of modern tools as well. So I hope you will watch and get some good ideas for your own future off grid life you dream of. You can do it! Thanks for watching and I will put a video out weekly.

Happy New Year 🎉 (de France)
Happy new year!
Loved the video!!! Can you snowmobile out of your property to the main road if necessary? Do you do any Tractor plowing? That might make an interesting video. Happy New Year.
Thanks for the questions. Yes I can make it to the maintained road about 2.5 miles away, but it gets plowed down to nothing. I have a video out from last winter when I was plowing the road here so I could drive out, but chose to not plow this year and just use the snowmobile. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year 🇬🇧🤣
Thank you and Happy New Year to you as well!
You definitely got LOTS OF SNOW !! HaPpY NEW YEAR Al !
Thank You Robert, Happy New Year
Like #36 and 72 views. So glad you filmed it.. or we wouldn't believe it.. lol.. Wishing you a very happy new year and a prosperous one too. May God bless and keep you close. Now about that ((2 feet deep snow)).. you had to keep walking and it got knee deep on you.. until you stood up that is. That sled looks fun.. LOVE the reverse. Too bad Spokane is about 1200 miles from here. Guess I'll be content with my Jeep here. Sleep well.. Chat with ya next year my friend, with a pat on the head for Sage and Cooper.
Oh it's 2 feet deep at the snowmobile, I must not have shown me standing at the front of the snowmobile, I actually filmed my leg where I stepped and it was past my knee and probably not even down to the dirt. The place I leaned down to talk at if you will look again to the left the snow is higher beyond the track area I was in, at least 20". Happy New Year and take care.
Howdy Al- I realize the snow can be a nuisance but it sure is beautiful. Glad you were able to get your snowmobile out and back home. Hope all is well. Wishing you a very happy, safe and prosperous new year. God bless
Thank you sir, Happy New Year to you.
Happy New Year Al :D That snow mobile smiled as it got parked in its own little house. You know what, if we don't have failures we don't get to experience the pleasure of our successes. I love me a good failure cos it means I'm still learning. Looking at that world through your eyes it looks beautiful :P
Thank you Shelly, Happy New Year and don't party too late this evening. 😉
Good year Al -- great year! And you've set yourself up for an even better one next year!
Thank PK, Hopefully summer will be longer so I can get more done in 2025 then has happened this year. Happy New Year.
@@offgridal TY, It's all about the process, progress is just the bi-product. There will be plenty of years ahead to put your feet up in that dovetail cabin! Stay safe.
Happy New Year. Al thank you for what you do.
Happy New Year Jim, Thank you
So the tree that fell oddly was limb, heavy on one side?
Yes heavy to the left, but It fell backwards because the plunge cut was too close to the wedge cut on one side which cased it to fall backwards and to the right a little. Still a controlled cut as I knew which way it was going to fall once I noticed the bad cut and then I adjusted my positioning while cutting the tag at the back to make sure I had an escape route in mind if things went bad.
Beauty of a place ! Subscribed gonna watch more later.
Thank you for subscribing, Happy Holidays
Yep.. BIG TIMBERrrrrrrrrr hitting the ground. You seem to have a good routine for felling them to limbing them, then cutting to measured length then dragging them to the mill.. finally milling them.. but it's good honest hard work and even notching them according to the plan. Lots of love and labor into them. Oh.. the views are improving.. You describing where your gonna build that cabin somewhere in the vicinity where you were talking.. You mentioned it being some of the flattest area on your land.. well.. the camera was very deceiving.. it looked so steep your tractor wouldn't have climbed it. ttyl..
Thank you for the comments. Yes it's the flattest area, but still slightly sloped, but even the steeper areas have been navigable with my tractor. Enjoy your off grid property you moved to, looking forward to seeing your projects. Happy Holidays my friend.
Howdy Al- such beautiful scenery out there. I do believe you are going to have a white Christmas for sure. Hope all is well. Take care and stay safe. God bless
Hey there Bearded Carpenter, Thank you. BTW I fount the segment in one of your video's when you was showing some beam work and yes the saw horses on that video inspired me to build mine that way. It was a memory that apparently stuck with me. Merry Christmas Sir 👍
@ Merry Christmas to you and yours. Blessings
Watching those beautiful trees fall knowing that they are going to become part of your build that will last forever is awesome. I do think the tractor is going to get a real workout moving them to the mill :D About the only time I think your snow looks amazing is when the sun shines on it :P I totally understand the need for an area that suits us, I have a one bedroom granny flat under my daughters house. I don't envy her all the housework in her house I have more than enough area for me and my fur babies. You stay safe my friend and keep on enjoying that cold, wet and miserable weather :D I say that cos I know you love it.
Thank you Shelly, you're correct I love the miserable winter weather. 🤣 Have a Merry Christmas
Big respect about al your projects Al💪🏻👍with best wishes from Switzerland 🇨🇭
Like #62. Brrr... I'm at just over 3000' here.. Was told it snows here too. We'll see. So did you teach Sage how to climb a ladder.. to get into the loft..? haha.. Nice solid saw horses.
Yep it's bitter cold here and it's just getting started. I wish Sage would climb up the ladder, but I pack here up it and she's not lite.
Howdy Al- nice sawhorses. That’s pretty much how I build mine for working logs and timbers. We used to build new sets on every project and leave them when done because they were too bulky to haul. I made four sets out of treated lumber which have held up for several years now. You’re right about having them at the perfect height for working logs. Mine are always lower because I’m not a tall person. Looking forward to seeing the cabin build. Stay safe and warm out there. God bless
Thanks, I'm sure that's your channel I have seen them done before on. If I recall when you were building your cabin to lift the beams up you made a neat hoist system. I will need to do that for the Appellation cabin build after this one. I'm building a cabin on each 20 acre parcel so my kids will each get one. Happy Hollidays
Heya Mate I was about to send out a search party to look for you :D Sage the Princess is a real camera hog. K thanks for the heads up about videos being every two weeks that will stop me dramatically reloading TH-cam to see if you have arrived :D Those sawhorses are so beefy they will outlive all of us :P Have a great week Al till next time.
Oh Shelly you made me laugh when you wrote send out a search party 🤣you are correct the sawhorses certainly will last and last and last. Thanks again.
Good to see you back Al, look forward to your episodes, and I hope you are keeping well, greetings from the UK🙂
Thank you Russell, I'm well, you stay well also.
Looks good, nice lumber
Thanks
Would love to see more snowmobiling videos. A little snow shoeing too if you have some.
I do have snow shoes as well and planned to do a Holliday special some time this December. Snow shoeing and snowmobiling around here. Thanks for the suggestion it good to know we think alike. 🙂
Its Beautiful up there
Hey old man, you look like you finally achieved your goal of going “off grid“. Looks amazing, be careful up there, Will (RT Chev)
Hello Will, It's been years hasn't it? The off grid life is wonderful, one of the best decisions I ever made. Be well and thank you.
Supper cool video
Thanks Sergey I'm glad you liked it.
Hi, new subscriber here! I love everything about this video! So pretty!
Thank you so much for subscribing. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
@ Yw 😊✌🏼
Like #91 in 7 hrs. Wow.. that's pretty serious when you can go ride the sled on your place. Just don't get stuck.. (LOL.. I know) Well.. hope you got enough supplies stocked up.. Well.. I'm now 900 miles farther from you. I'm NOW offgrid on my land. I'm loving it. I'm just over 3000' here.. Sage was acting like a puppy in it.. seemed pretty excited. Consider dragging a small trees sideways behind that machine.. it would act like a small plow if you have to go anywhere in the truck. maybe..? Have a nice warm weekend buddy..
Yep Sage loves the weather. I have plenty of food although I may run out of propane to run the generator at some point. I got a little melt off overnight, but that seems to be the cycle happening this year. Melt, snow, melt and more snow. Enjoy your off grid property and take care my friend.
You are getting so much done Al. It will take some time but you have the can do attitude that it takes!
Thanks Lavern. Stay warm my friend.
Howdy Al- if we got a snow like that we would be just about completely shut down. Our hiway department is not equipped to handle much snow. We have always been able to do what we need to. I don’t know if I could endure several months of it. Your dog seemed to be enjoying it. Stay safe and warm. A good time to make some chili. God bless
Thanks my friend, Yes Sage loves the weather and space here. I am cooking up some stew on the wood stove and keeping warm. The long winter last year was tough to get through, I am someone that likes to be busy during the day and not sitting around watching TV. Take care
Stay warm!
Will do, Thanks
No video from you is a bad video. I appreciate you letting us know that you are OK. I may not want to physically live in the snow but I do find it interesting to see you living you in it. Have a great week Al :D
Have a great weekend as well and thank you very much.
Don't sweat the videos, some of us enjoy days like this lol
Thank you
Hi Al. Looks beautiful there currently. Doesn't always have to be build videos. A day in the life of Al is just as interesting, you still have things to do when snowed in. ❤
Thanks
The timber your working in looks allot like mine, but your trees are all too straight. Although yours is way to flat. My journey on youtube these days is mostly mitigation type work. Not saying you dont have one, however I did not see it if you do. Pick up a CAT or RAT tourniquet ($20-30) keep on you at all times. Running a saw alone in the woods is dangerous by itself (I get it, I do it constantly, never have help) you only have so much of the red stuff, hit a rock, a bullet, metal, a nail, old fence, the list is a mile long of stuff you csn run into and break a chain. Not tryin to be a karen.
I have cell service up here in most places so I keep the phone on me at all times. A tourniquet is certainly a great idea. My biggest concern while cutting down a tree is if I get caught under it, probably no recovery from that. Not many people up here either and good luck getting helpI needed it. Thanks for your input I appreciate it.Good advice!
@offgridal I carry a rat tourniquet in my cargo pocket daily inside of a small snack sized zip lock bag, small and discrete. I also have a felling I wear when felling trees, I keep my hatchet, a small bag with some wedges in it, and a Cat tourniquet on the belt. Not to sound like a know it all, but the artery in your thigh if you catch that good throwing a chain, your bled out in under 3 min...help is always greater then that away. Like I said, not trying to sound like a jerk, I'm just paranoid...lol
@@Mountaintoptractor Great information I truly appreciate it.
Does your area have wolves or cougars/Mt. Lions?
We do have Canada lynx, Cougar, Mt. Lions,Wolves, Black Bear, also Colville which is near my area is a recovery project bringing back Grizzly bears to northeast Washington. That's to touch on some of the wildlife here,
@offgridal thanks for the answer.
Howdy Al- I really like your sawmill setup. It’s obvious you have extra track extensions. How long can you saw? Take care and God bless
I bought 3 extra tracks, they allow me to mill up to 29 ft. I have a few beams milled that long and it's max. When I build my Appellation Cabin I will need to scarf joint them and that will be a new learning curve for me. I don't have the skill you have.
@ I have no doubt that you can do whatever you need to and it will be beautiful! Blessings
I remember when you cut your knee. Take care. Stay warm😊
Thanks Laurie, It's 28F this morning and another snow storm is on the way in. Take care and happy Hollidays to you and yours 😀
@offgridal COLD.....You'll have that woodstove roaring tonight 😊
@@laurie6986 Yes I do...
So true Al as we get older a scar or two isn't a problem. IF I got called out every time I did/do something wrong I would be aging backwards :P But OK I am up to say **AL put them damned chaps on even to trim the trees** :D OMG its sad to be Al when this oldie starts complainin :D That tree is so big you will be able to shingle half the state ? Someone's gonna have a wet butt o.O See you next week Al :D
Thanks Shelly, That tree will produce many shakes/shingles and I will cut down one more for the project in case it's not enough. I hope to get what I can done before the snow gets too deep. No milling until the thaw, but then I will be working dawn to dusk to get as much done as possible. Take care
That was a nice fell, huge tree! Douglas Fir is premier wood too. The Ash is nice wood (furniture, not really outdoors) we have tons of that, but they ALL died when the Emerald Ash Bore beetle came through. If you see them kicking the bucket get 'em within about two years. Bucking those must smell so good!
Thanks PK, Yes the Douglas Fir is what I am using for the 2x6 and 2x8's. It's a good looking grain as well. In the summer we do get pine Beatles here often. I have been cutting down Beatle kill trees when ever I find them. I think this week I will cut down a coupe more of them and hopefully they will be good enough for some lumber still. I love the smell of Pine in the morning.😀
Howdy Al- I had watched a video of yours a couple weeks ago and couldn’t remember the channel name. So glad you popped back up on my feed. Just subscribed so I can get notifications now. Looking forward to seeing you do your building. I wish you the very best with it. Take care and God bless

Good stuff.. and still coming down a bit. Build a snowman this weekend.
Thanks for the update, thanks for the time in making the video
Yes that was my first year of firewood collecting, so I needed to fine as much seasoned wood as possible in the short term. Thanks for watching it.
Just found your channel, just watched your intro video, look forward to catching up with them all, cheers from the UK 🇬🇧🙂
That's awesome Mr. Hayward, Thanks for joining along. Bigger things will be in the future for my channel. Have a great week.

I have chaps, just got lazy. A good point. Thanks for waking up to my lazy practices.
If this was done in last week of Nov. Why am I seeing this on Nov. 9th ?
@@MarioBrbovic-z9t Did I say last week? NOT! - I just checked my video and I posted FIRST WEEK OF NOVEMBER in Caps. Nice try though
Just curious, during your winter down/non work time what do you do to occupy yourself? Reading? If so what? Hunting?
Great question, I still do many things. I usually draw up my build plans (I.E. Walls and roof design for the current build) and cut trees down for the build. I like to go out and track animals in the winter and see what I can get on film. No hunting or ice fishing yet as I don't have a place to store meat currently. I usually consolidate video's, but this year I won't be doing that. Hoping for a shorter winter this year so I can accomplish more and I am going to try and get creative with more filming this winter and in the future I will work in the shop once built during winters here building furniture and cabinets for my builds. Sorry that was a long explanation to the question you had.🤔
@offgridal I appreciate the "long" explanation. It gives context 🙂👍🏻
I had that happen to me last year got lucky and got some wedges in before it came back my way
The Pine trees are the toughest to drop in any other direction than the side with the most limbs.
Hi , the surviving ringworm channel uses a great rig for hauling big timber. It might be worth a look . Good luck
Thanks I will check it out. Although my system works pretty well.
Is this suppose to be Off grid Alaska ? Channel name is Off grid Alabama
Hi i am your new subscriber will start watch you from this first video
Welcome glad to have you along for m,y journey.
Wouldn't it be easier to carry such a log..? Do you have a bigger bar and chain..? Those are some good sized trees.. lol. Sage sure has a one track mind when your outside trying to work.
Yes I also have a 28" and 30" Bars, just need new chains for them. Sage deffinetly has a one track mind.
@offgridal My neighbor used to be a logger. He has about a 45" bar hanging up on a wall of his garage. It's a monster. There is no engine attached, but it must have been huge, too. I have one of the old Homelite XL750s from the 70's. It runs great. Well.. have a nice evening
@@OFFGRID_Trucker That is a big bar to wheel. Take care.
@@OFFGRID_Trucker My father drove a log hauling truck in the late 40's early 50's. I remember him saying back then it took 10 trucks to bring out one felled tree and then in the 80's it took 1 truck to bring out 10 trees. I have looked at old pictures of how they cut down the trees and am really grateful I live in the age of chainsaws :D
@shellywinters2162 nice. I'm a trucker. 1.3+ million miles and not done yet. I drove a log truck once. It wasn't my cup of tee. Went back to dump trucks and heavy equipment. Yeah.. alot has changed.. interesting how they set up the cables to pull them logs in.
