Matters of writing and analysis.
How to Analyze Advertisements PART 3: Commercials
In this video, I discuss time-based advertisements, their relationship to storytelling, and analyze a Honda Odyssey minivan commercial in detail.
Here is the link to the original commercial being analyzed:
th-cam.com/video/0obCX2puVBI/w-d-xo.html
ALSO: it didn't really fit into the flow of the video, but another small detail to note in the commercial is that the male figure drops his old car keys alongside the milk (you have to look very closely to see them in the shadows). On a surface level, this simply implies he is leaving his old car behind for this new and exciting ride, but under the theme I've established in the video it could also represent a moment of superficial "growth" (leaving his old self behind).

Professor Lenz, loving your ad breakdowns. Can you suggest some books on the psychology of advertising?
You have no idea how I need such a series. Thank you for all the effort you put into them , thankssss
Glad to hear it was helpful!
nice video's Lenz. Really interesting and food for thought
These breakdowns are brilliant!!!! Love it!!
You're the best.
Thank you for the kind words! Thanks for watching!😃
How do you decide an ad is good or succesful without data.? You can analyse it, make a millions connections and assumptions on why the creator did something, but its always best guess and on top of all that the ad might have been a flop.
Good question. I touch on this in Part 3, but one of the most obvious indicators would be the company using the same campaign style or strategy more than once (they wouldn't spend more money if they weren't seeing a positive ROI). There were several similar style Juicy Couture ads around the time this one was made in which they blended two different layers like this. So, I am starting from the premise that it was successful campaign and dissecting a possible line of reasoning for why/how it might reach people effectively. That having been said, a well made ad might still slip under the radar due to other factors (poor ad placement, limited money to get it out there, ahead of its time, etc). I believe it all begins with craft, but there are certainly more factors involved.
@@professorlenz Thanks for the reply. Ill be checking out the other video.
I wonder if all of these symbols are actually needed. I find it hard to believe that my brain perceives all of them. But maybe they pack the commercials or ads with many symbols in the hopes that they will work to capture or convey the message to many different people. Maybe my subconscious only perceives the backdrop and maybe 2 other symbols. But the rockstar image could capture someone else. Or maybe I am perceiving all of them. I am curious about this.
The symbols might not all be needed to achieve their aim, but advertisers understand that most of our brain processes are subconscious and that repetition helps to embed ideas into our minds. So, commercials are often heavy handed with repetition ("Liberty, liberty, li-ber-ty... Lib-er-ty!").
Hallo 🙋
It was a fire sale
😂
Hey prof, i just noticed in the sale ad with the dogs, the dalmatian on the left is missing its front leg. I belive it symbolizes how a sale is something to lose an arm and a leg. what are your thoughts on this, any deeper meanings you can derive from ur perspective?
Good attention to detail! Although I do think both legs are there, it's just hard to see. The one on the left has it's second leg over the clothing item and the dog on the right - if you look really closely - appears to have both feet right next to each other (you can see the tip of a second paw behind the first). But it's a good thought and that's the kind of attention to detail you want to look for when analyzing stuff! 👍
@@professorlenzoh nvm, thanks for the clarification thou
I thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos and learned a lot from them. Could you please share more videos on developing analytical skills?
Thank you for the kind words. I had a similar question a few weeks ago. I will copy my answer here: I try to put some advice into each of my videos to help develop analytical skills. Analysis is a combination of things - pattern recognition being the most important. And like all skills, it takes practice. You also need a little bit of knowledge about whatever it is you're analyzing - whether it be ads, a film, a poem, etc. Just like a movie critic doesn't need to be a filmmaker to analyze a film, you don't have to be an advertising expert to analyze ads (for the record, I am not an advertising expert), but you should have some basic knowledge on any genre you decide to analyze. And you have to spend A LOT of time with whatever you're analyzing to tease it all out. I didn't look at this commercial and immediately see everything I talk about. I had to rewatch many, many times to start seeing all the possible connections. That's a bit of general advice - hope it is helpful. Thanks for watching!
The position of the woman’s hand is also sexually suggestive.
Yes, I think there are a couple of directions one could go with that. I had considered discussing a particular angle there, but felt the analysis might start to get a bit too PG-13. Feel free to add your own interpretation in the comments.
@@professorlenz probably wise not to spell it out in the video really. If you know, you know.
Nice video, so interesting. Do you have books to advice for us, to be able to analyse ourself some ads ? Maybe it can be a topic of a future video on your channel

@@professorlenz thank you so much for your awnser and this advice !
It's really interesting to think that advertisements have so many details to manipulate the viewer.
Love the video man, one suggestion. You need better thumbnails if you want more growth. Other than that this video is amazing
It is admittedly an area of weakness for me. Do you know of a good app for creating more eye-catching ones?
This is why ads are the scariest things in our society today. They lie and say “you need this” and give you seemingly logical reasons, but really they appeal emotionally and make it hard to think critically about their arguments about the world. Fantastic analysis - I hope you keep doing more
Hands down, this is the newest entry in my top 5 TH-cam channels It’d be fun to see analysis of common TH-cam ads
Wow, that's high praise. Thanks so much for the kind words. Glad you are enjoying the content. I have been focusing these videos around ads that have some complexity to them, but it's a good idea to do a video going through a series of simpler, more common ads.

If they really want to get sales advertisers should hire the creators of smiling friends and let them make the crazy ad let them do anything they want with the limits created buy the advertising agent
I see where you’re going with the constricted pupils, but most drugs associated with hippies dilate the pupils. Drugs that made them move, or dance. Uppers. Her sitting here with constricted pupils means she’s in an H-daze, unable to move. Which could be. I personally think they chose to just showcase the blueness of the eyes. Imo this is an ad meant to capture a white audience who is interested in bohemian culture.
Thanks youtube algorithm, more cool content about critical literary!!!
I have no idea how TH-cam recommended your video to me, but this is the best advice for Show don‘t tell I‘ve ever seen. You just helped me so much.

do we have any authentic model for analyzing advertisements ?

Professor where are you?
United States. How about you?
@@professorlenz Pakistan. Found your channel today. After putting such banger stuff where did you go? Are you coming back?
@@SMHBK I have a lot more content in mind and keep meaning to come back, but finding the time is the challenge. Kind comments like this help bring back some motivation to get going again, so thank you for dropping by and letting me know you enjoyed the videos. Hopefully, will find some free time to get some more videos out again soon.
@@professorlenz so what do you do full time if you are not doing TH-cam? Like do you own an advertising agency or do you teach marketing and advertising?
@@SMHBK At the time these videos were made, I was teaching college courses in writing and critical thinking and a segment of the class was devoted to image analysis. I was never in the advertising field, nor was I ever a full time TH-camr; I just made these videos one semester when I was teaching online to help my class out with certain concepts being discussed in class. However, I noticed since then that there has been a lot of interest in this video, so making a Part 2 and some other related videos has been on my project list. Since I don't earn anything from TH-cam, it means these videos will just be made for fun and to help out anyone who finds value in it.
Can I know the brand that made the two Dalmatian dogs fighting ad please?
Sorry, I don't remember. I got it off of a website many years ago when I was looking for interesting ads. The only thing that I remember is that it was a German brand, but I cannot remember the name. So sorry!
This was a great video, but I can't help but wonder...was that at the end your personal interpretation of the Juice Couture ad? Or you have information about the company or perhaps read an article about it where the company explained the advertisement? I mean your analysis was very thorough and insightful, but it's also very subjective, maybe other advertisers would see that ad with different lenses? I'm not criticizing here, just wondering :)
Yes, this is my interpretation and I have no inside knowledge of what the creators were thinking when they came up with the ad. I make no claims that my interpretation is "correct" or the only way this ad can be interpreted. You are correct that there are no absolutes in analysis of art, just whether or not you can make connections that seem "plausible". Interpretation is certainly subjective, but some interpretations are more plausible than others based on connections made, logical progression of ideas, etc. Often, artists themselves do not even fully see the connections they are making subconsciously when creating great art.
Great teaching
ARE YOU THE FALLOUT AND ROAD TRIP VIDEO GUY
Nope.
@@professorlenz hmmmmm sad

Thank you for the kind words. I am planning to get back into it soon (ish) and the next video will be Part 2 to this one. Stay tuned... (also, great channel name).
Wonderfully explained! 👌 I’m just wondering - does that analysis method have a name? I need to analyze sexism in ads for a thesis and am looking for a suitable method. Yours seems perfect, but I wouldn’t know what to name it and how to reference it ☺️
Thank you for the kind words. There is no name for my ad analysis strategies - just laying out the thinking process that has been helpful for me. When it comes to analyzing from a sexism angle, it sounds like you're working within what would be called "Feminist Critical Theory". There are many critical theories that are used as filters to analyze various types of media through, but they're not really so much methods as they are themes.
@@professorlenz Thank you very much! I appreciate your kind response and useful advice 🙏😊

I thoroughly enjoyed how you deconstructed the Juicy Couture ad. I find the unusual amount of butterflies on and around the model presents her as a queen. She can just be and life around her is drawn to her.
