Making Our Camper Poptop Cozy: Getting Heat Up There At Last!
Hi all!
In this video we're unboxing, fitting and giving our first impressions on the #50°Nord #CaliBoard and #HeatforCali the #volkswagen #california / #bulli
If you haven't come across them yet, 50°Nord are a dedicated Campervan accessory company in Germany, with a range of products - with one of their products being the CaliBoard and CaliHeat
Supported by an aluminium frame (that stays in place permanently), the CaliBoard provides a robust surface within the van, able to support weight to allow you to sit closer to the panoramic roof, place items on top overnight and give you more space when in the pop up roof, whilst providing greater insultation to the occupants below.
With the addition of the CaliHeat, you can feed some of the heat from the auxilliary heater into the roof for the best of both worlds.
For transparency, we have marked the video as paid promotion - however 50°Nord asked for an honest and unbiased review and fitting video and had no input in the content of this video.
Thanks to all those who have supported the channel so far, and if you've enjoyed it and want to see more, please do like and subscribe to help the channel grow!

Should you buy a Diesel Campervan nowadays?!
มุมมอง 278ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone, Welcome to another video! We've always battled with our conscience when it comes to our Volkswagen California Ocean; how can we love nature, yet drive a diesel - especially with this year's absurd weather patterns, wildfires, sea temperatures and more. In this episode, we break down our logic and whether or not a campervan is a good solution for today, and more importantly, tomorro...

VITAL CHOICES When Buying Your Family Campervan!

Loved the content, loved the B roll too ! 💛
Great video. Interested in the caliboard part. Do you find yourself catching your shins, other body parts, on the fixing rail that you had to screw in? I assume it has smooth edges. At the moment we clamber up onto the soft edge of the mattress/topper.
Almost £ 500 😂😂 must be touched 😅
:D all depends on what’s of value to you. After years of shuffling cheap boxes and the stress it all brings, they’re invaluable.
Hi, Good video and excellent description. We have a wrap for extra warmth, however it can still get cool with cold air entering the roof space via the two breath vents in the top. So we brought a caliheat off Ebay. Summer being here means we we test in October
Thankyou. Congrats on the purchase - they’re really great at getting a bit more heat upstairs and bringing a big of luxury to the pop top! The only thing we wish we had was a little fan/blower to circulate it into the poptop more.
Good informative video and a good product, bu id be worried that the heater would be going non stop as it would never hit the temperature to cut out,, which in turn wouldn't be good for the diesel heater But it's a good product, i guess youll get warn when you're tucked up under the covers 😂 Thank you for a great video
Thanks. Absolutely; we’ve been keeping an eye on it albeit not used it the past few weeks with it getting warmer, but not had it run non-stop yet. Still considering a wrap for the roof bellows.
Self tapping screws
I knew it was something like that, honest… 😂
Looks great Tom, congratulations on your successful DIY!
Thank you! Cheers!
These look like an elegant and smart way to address the limited storage in our T6.1. I have been using the various Ikea hard and soft shell hacks but between stuff falling out, rattling and getting lost and trying to locate the tea pot last night I think I have finally justified this extreme cost. We had our table out last night and I was trying to hunker down to pull out an Ikea box to find our tea pot and it took longer than expected and I ended up pulling every thing out and repacking again. In a small space I simply was unable to get a clean line of site into the bottom of the lower press and nothing was in easy reach. So maybe the time has come to purchase these, hmmmm. Which is worse now, the struggle in reach for the tea pot or my wallet. I love your videos, this once was very helpful, thanks.
The shame of it is that boxes like these really should be standard equipment in the Cali. Thankfully the Cali's got such a strong following that there's aftermarket options like this. But the price does hurt... Thanks for the positive comment about the videos - constantly learning!
Hi all - thanks for watching. What are your thoughts of the CaliBoard & CaliHeat? Shout if you have any questions!
I thought you’d answered my prayers with these boxes….until googled and saw the price. I’m sure they’re good quality but even so.
It’s the one downside in my view - exacerbated with customs/brexit impacts. But if 50Nord could find a way to have a reseller in the UK, everyone would win for sure!
thanks for the vlog guys! ps also liking your seat covers too. :)
Thanks guys! They're the cheap quality (but not cheap price!) VW OEM ones - but to be fair, they've stood the test of time so far with the two hooligans and dog! Do miss the original brightness though!
they look perfect for this weather. We are looking for something as already had a lucky escape with some red wine :D@@camperfam
@@Thevanfarers :D They a simple and easy fit and do the job. But akin to sitting on a waterproof coat all the time. Summer isn't a fun season for them...we've got our eye on some Jackyard seat covers or perhaps some secondskins.
Anyone know if these block the interior lights inside the kitchen storage on the t6.1? I don’t think the t6 has factory fitted lights?
T6 does indeed have lights; but they're rather rubbish. I believe they're the same in the T6.1.
Thanks! I assume these do block the lights though?
To be fair, i've not yet tried it in dark enough conditions to notice. I'll take a look at some point and let you know!
We love the style of your videos. We also got these boxes for the kitchen and the back and absolutely love them. ❤️🚐👨👩👦🐕
Thanks! :) They're brilliant, arent they (the boxes! :D ). The website doesn't do them justice!
Great answer for organising such a small space, but a scarily expensive way of doing it! However, on a separate note, well done on producing yet another enjoyable and really great quality video. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Simon
What, soooooo expensive 😮
Theyre a bit on the ouch-side!
Nowt wrong with being a storage geek. I am too. Liking the look of these. Lot of money though, but comparable to the cost of good tool storage. I'll need a think. Keep up the good work with the videos; liking the humour and production values. 😄
Thanks! Absolutely agree regarding the good tool storage. The boxes arent needed for good storage habits/space utilisation; but really do help finish it off to a very high standard and fit the very most in a sensible way.
Thanks for watching! So what are your thoughts? Worth it? Or am I just far too excitable about boxes?
Yep we have considered these for some time. Good video to demonstrate fitting. Thanks. Will def be getting those lights!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for watching! We'll be running with the shelves for the foreseeable future so we'll be featuring them as a longer term test and review in 'the real world'. In the meantime, what are your thoughts, and if you have a California, would you consider repurposing your wardrobe with shelves? As always, *please do like and subscribe* if you've liked this video or found it helpful as it makes a huge difference to the TH-cam algorithm and us being able to make more content like this. We're on a learning journey with editing and presentation so thanks taking the time to watch!
Thought provoking stuff¬
Thanks Chris.
Great video, space mate is a great addition to any California. What bike rack do you have and have you modified to allow the tailgate to open.
Thanks! Thule Velospace XT-3 and the Thule Backspace XT Box. No modification needed; the bikerack has three settings on tilt angle (an adjustment pin in the frame), which is on it's max setting. I've amended the description to include the product links to Amazon.
We got the SpaceMate last year and love it until today. One of our must haves for our VW California. ❤️🚐👨👩👦🐕
We saw your vid! Congrats on being the first DE SpaceMate owners! :D
Let us know in the comments what you think if the SpaceMate tray everyone! If you have one, how do you make best use of yours? We're looking at getting ourselves a 12v Hub and affixing it to the tray, so we can charge and store our equipment/powerstation etc, out of the way and out of sight, but within easy access when parked up. What are your thoughts?
Fabulous! I've filled up my tank and I'm off....guilt free 😅
:D We're very curious to see what the EV Californias of the future hold - but until then, it's the next best option from our view. But if a Buzz could tackle our needs....could be very tempted.
A great topic - not done before as far as I'm aware. I've often had my conscience challenged by this very question and have struggled to justify having ownership of our Cali. Thanks to you - not anymore! Lots of informed detail here - just a question of remembering it all! Thanks for losing the music over your chat - much better.
Thanks Gina. Glad you liked it!
Oh yes and thanks for getting rid of the background music, 100% better!
Glad you like it!
Enjoyed this topic, been thinking the same thing while we wait for our California to arrive. I agree that the likely long term use of my California over the next 5 to 10 years and stopping flying will offset my environmental conscience.
Glad you enjoyed! It's all too easy to just look at a diesel and think it's a poor choice from an environment perspective; but when you take into account the full footprint - and the ongoing cost (ie - charging an electric car up by non-renewable generated power), it's less green. What Cali have you gone for?
@@camperfam Ocean 150 DSG in Cherry Red.
@@NickM-g5e Fantastic colour! Far better than our heat-soaking black paint :D
Great video Tom. Looking forward to more of the same.
Thanks Paul! What worked for you with the videos? Was there anything that didn't? (We'll fix the frustrating background music for next time!)
Hey Tom. Thanks for this new channel - just the ticket now that Cali Chris is looking at other new VWs and the lovely California Time folks are getting a Sven. We have a Cali Ocean 6.1 and so we are dead pleased to have found you. Good luck on this new venture - a great start to be sure. Take care of yourselves, your kids, your pooch, and, oh, that van!! All the best, Gina
Thanks Gina! Much appreciated. Envious of the 6.1; the 'lay back' bench, the non-sliding doors, etc. Did you go for a digital dash???? (Technology mad, i'm afraid...)
Have had the 6.1 Ocean for two years and loving it. Sometimes I just sit in it on the drive! I have an electric sliding door and electric pop-top - as yet I haven't had the problems others seem to have had (fingers crossed). And yes, I have to digital dash which is super cool. Having said that, I hate the sat nav so stick with my Gavi or phone! But overall it's a great camper and I've no regrets even at the price!! So looking forward to watching what you do next re the videos.@@camperfam
Great first video
Thanks!
Hi good video, will keep watching (for me maybe lose the music running all through video). Thanks for bothering to do this.
Great feedback; thanks for taking the time to share it!
Nothing better than getting into the wilderness and exploring our heathlands! What about you?
Hi Tom, was going to comment on your first video, but got distracted, sorry! Anyway, just wanted to say how much I’ve enjoyed your first couple of videos. The quality of footage and your presentation is excellent for such a young channel….and that’s coming from an avid watcher of TH-cam content. We are a slightly different profile from you guys, being in our late 50’s where our girls are all grown up with families of their own, so it’s just the 2 of us and our 2 cocker spaniels, but looking to start our campervan journey, and currently having a nightmare deciding what we want. As this will definitely be my daily driver to replace my Range Rover, the VW Cali Ocean is still top of list…but sooo expensive in comparison to some of the other options. Looking forward to following your channel and hoping you will appreciate some positive feedback and that this will encourage you to keep your excellent content coming! 😊
Thanks Simon! It's one of our goals is to make our videos look and feel crafted; so i'm glad that's come through! Still experimenting and learning (first time we've done anything like this, so it's a real learning curve!) Certainly get where you're coming from on cost comparisons and other marques. The benefit of a campervan is that it can be justified as the daily driver in addition to camping - so when looking at that cost delta of the Range Rover versus 'something else' - you're then left with your real cost (+ strong residuals). The Marco Polo is another consideration or the Ford Nugget - we've always loved the look of the Cali and the Marco Polo is far too posh looking for the mess that we bring :D
Great footage, gorgeous images! En of cours an interesting topic. Good luck with your channel and enjoy the California!
Thank you! You too!
Great Video! Some good tips to consider.
Glad you enjoyed!
Hi everyone! What do you think? Have you gone for a Self Buid or Professional Conversion instead of a California? If so, what drove you to the decision?
