The Newcastle Schools 500 Games were held for the second time between in July 2012. They were planned to be the UK's largest ever single-authority, multi-sport event for schools. The Games were delivered and coordinated by Newcastle Local Education Authority, Newcastle School Games Organisers and Newcastle Leisure Services.

The School Games programme is a key government priority for realising a meaningful sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Locally the programme is being delivered in conjunction with Active Newcastle and Newcastle's Local Education Authority. Olympians, politicians, teachers, parents and our young people have been inspired by Team GB's achievements at the London 2012...

This is the Tyne and Wear School Games pilot held at John Spence Community High School and Sunderland Tennis Centre. Over 1000 young people took part in the competiton with 150 young leaders, 14 National Governing Bodies and 62 Schools.
