Very good. Additionally, I have found to further protect yourself, it helps to move your body and head to the left (sometimes with a lunging step) towards your opponent’s right shoulder. This allows you to strike deeper and move your body past where their sword can strike.

Your partners fall into well-described in sources trap of holding sword too high when parrying, thats why they get hit with mittels. I may be easy to fix - all they need is to loosen up a bit and look less after your weapon, since this makes them to move their sword much too early.

''The Animated Zettel'' For a while now, I have been gathering clips of "textbook" techniques or tactics applied in full gear sparring. I will start posting one every week on tuesdays. I have 16 already made and footage to make a few more. It's very easy to find on TH-cam tons of videos of people demonstrating source-based techniques against cooperative partners, or in simplified drills, but it's difficult to find all these techniques applied in actual sparring while also being described at the same time. It could be (I hope) a tool for beginners to get an idea of what it could look like when done against someone who doesn't want to get hit. Some links and important notes in the first comment below. This series was inspired by Michel Rensen's "Techniques in the Wild" series (link in the comments) All the footage comes from sparring and tournament fencers of the Blademasters Academy Constructive criticism always welcome. Enjoy 🙂 Blademasters Academy youtube channel: www.youtube.com/@BlademastersAcademyHEMA ''Techniques in the Wild'': th-cam.com/play/PLUINovERBtY1_G3hsL1t3dybK2-r9t_NS.html&si=BD0W8-PcxNLls-le

First exchange: white throws a falso manco provocation to my sword followed by a riverso squalembro. I parry and riposte with an imbroccata, which white parries in guardia di testa. He ripostes with a mandritto fendente, which I parry, and I riposte with a mandritto tondo to the leg. Second exchange: I try to provoke with a punta dritta (guardia d'entrare), but white doesn't take the bait and merely displaces it without committing. Then I throw a punta riversa (guardia di faccia), but this time it's not a provocation; I get in opposition on his sword and land the thrust to the mask. Third exchange: white throws a falso manco at my sword, followed by a riverso, which I parry. I riposte with a riverso, which white voids. Then I attempt a thrust, which is too short, and white hits my face with a mandritto tondo. Fourth exchange: white throws a direct mandritto fendente to my head; I parry in guardia di testa and riposte with a mandritto which white also parries in guardia di testa. We're back to guard and white throws a strong punta riversa (guardia di faccia thrust) in opposition on my sword, but somehow I manage to parry it and I riposte with a riverso ridoppio to his body. Sixth exchange: I throw a thrust, white parries it with a falso manco; he ripostes with a riverso squalembro, I parry it and riposte with an imbroccata, which white also parries before riposting with a mandritto. I parry it and riposte with a riverso, which white parries, and now we're back to our guards. White throws a strong punta riversa (guardia di faccia thrust) in opposition on my sword, and lands it beautifully in my face. Seventh exchange: I throw a thrust, white parries with a falso manco and ripostes with a riverso. I parry it and riposte with an imbroccata, which hits his belly. Eighth exchange: White throws a tramazzone at my forearm. I try to parry it with a falso manco but I am too slow and get my wrist cut off. Ninth exchange: white throws a riverso at me, I parry and riposte with an imbroccata, which he parries. He ripostes with a mandritto fendente, I parry it in guardia di testa and I riposte with a riverso tondo to the body. Tenth exchange: white attempts a provocation but I don't take the bait and step back. I then attack with a mandritto fendente, white parries, he ripostes with a mandritto fendente, and I parry it too. I attempt a thrust which white parries while stepping back. I attempt a second thrust which white parries before riposting with a mandritto to my head. Eleventh exchange: I throw a direct thrust to white's arm, he attempts to parry it with a falso manco but my thrust is faster and lands. Twelwth exchange: white provokes my by tapping my sword, I take the bait and raise my arm to cut at him; he then throws a mandritto riddopio to my sword arm Thirteenth exchange: I transition from guardia d'alicorno into porta di ferro stretta and from there throw a direct stoccata to his hand. Fourteeth exchange: I probe with a non-committed and non threatening thrust, white throws a falso manco towards my sword, but I pull back to avoid the bind, white keeps the initiative and throws a riverso squalembro to my elbow, and my arm being pulled, I am unable to defend myself against it.
