Welcome to all things diesel (okay...and a few gas engines). We’re having loads of fun and doing some of the necessary work. Come along for the ride and smell that exhaust.
Probably Shouldn't Have Done This - Pulling 30' Trailer Off-Road Up Mountain Road
Caterpillar D4 helps out when the 550 couldn't do it. Not sure how we're going to get this thing down off the mountain now...
Dozer/Tractor is a 1951 D4-7U with a 5.7L 4-cyl diesel. Gas pony motor with electric start. Truck is a F550, 6.0 Powerstroke, gross weight is 11,500 pounds. The trailer is a 30 foot with 2 slide outs. Not sure about it's weight, but I think it may be around 7,000 pounds.

Love your machine. I have a 52 d47u and it's awesome seeing the same old iron still workin
Maybe it should become a permanent home up there.
Yeah that would be nice 😎…a 30’ trailer in the middle of the woods is better than any mansion in the city to me.
Just get a tent n do some real camping, forget this camper camping, ain’t even an experience.
Camping? That’s my house! 😂
We were wheeling in the bighorns and I was caught by surprise we came to a valley where there were 5-6 big trailers and trucks, and I wondered how that went getting that shit up there. Now I know. The trails weren’t too technical but not something I’d drag a one ton dually hooked to a big fifth wheel down. Just risking 100’s of thousands to get back there isn’t worth it to me. There’s a place for them, it’s just closer to pavement.
Not the way I would roll for a weekend getaway. It was our off grid escape life raft.
At 1:02 someone chuckled, I did at the exact same spot!😆
And the AC pulled a vacuum and the refrigerator stopped sucking propane's and you forgot the generator adapter
That might not be 100% exactly right, but eerily close to the mark. Worked out fine in the end. Now we got to get it back down.
@@Smoking-Diesel awesome 😎 love the truck and RV
Land yachts to big , made to live in not camp in the wild , just saying 🎉
It was our house for 2 years. I could probably go the rest of my life without camping after that :) ...
Glad ya got it up there. Great vid! Love seeing the exhaust blasts with dirt in it
Yeah, those wheels were shootin’ the dirt. Thanks for watching.
Sounds great 😊
Thanks! 😊
Awesome. The cab is the real deal.
Thank you. The cab seems a lot better than being in the open. Sometimes I wonder if I happened to somehow roll the machine would the cab shear off and cut me in two, but I try not to think about it too much. Thanks for commenting.
That's cool ! I have a 1950 D4 7U.
Awesome! Does she run?
@@Smoking-Diesel oh yes, she runs real well. Mine was actually completely rebuilt in the '80,s and has not had a lot of heavy use since. Most people don't know how or don't want to run one with a pony motor.
Nice. The pony motor is a nice ritual.
Does that kubota got the 6 way blade? How much can you fit in that dump bed? Yards?
Just a 4-way blade. I've fit a good 5 yards in the dump bed, but we are usually hauling rock and are limited by weight. The truck weighs about 11,500 lbs and the gross limit is 17,900, so we're only able to get about 3 yards without the truck creaking and groaning. I've unintentionally loaded it up to 22,000 before and it did just fine but it being a 6.0, we try to baby it a bit.
@@Smoking-Diesel I’ve seen a couple of those machines lately with 6 ways on them Haven’t seen any other make do that I thouugjt it was pretty cool. Either way 4 way blad on a mini these days is getting to be rare it seems like. That’s an impressive amount for a that truck lol I need something like that pretty bad. I run a small business doing excavation I build a lot of rock walls and that truck would be ideal. Cool channel👍🏻
Thanks. The truck is really handy. Thanks for watching.
You know it's bad when a man is laying in the middle of the road.
That way I can simultaneously rest and assess… but yes it’s bad 😁
@@Smoking-Diesel and after resting and assessing you successfully removed the truck from the stuck.
Yep! ...lol.
So basically you got stuck on purpose for content
No. Got stuck on accident. Filmed on purpose ;)
@@Smoking-Diesel how did you get that far off the road when there is nothing in your way?
We just made the road, so the dirt was new, and not packed in enough. It was also still too narrow of a turn at that point. I was driving. Right at the time I was committed, my wife goes, “Maybe this isn’t a good idea,” and I lost both my momentum and my concentration. We get stuck on the driveway probably 3-4 times a year on average (it’s homemade, half mile long and still in progress due to the price of rock) usually not in good weather, and not once on purpose.
As the owner of three 7u’s I can tell this was not your first time being around that machine. That’s the way it’s done. Nice cab too.
Three!!! Wow. That would be fun. Thanks so much for the kind words. I started out knowing nothing and it's nice to hear the reassurance. Thanks for watching.

Wow! Looks like tough living.
Hard but good!
Fun stuff.
Thanks Bobby!
Used to run a 48 didnt have the the nice electric pony motor. Had a crank down through the hood. If you werent careful it would kick back and throw you over the hood. Loved that thing.
Running a machine that can injure you when you aren't doing it right is good for the soul. Not like these new cars that want to gripe and moan at you when your eyes leave the roadway...
Nice 👍
Thanks for watching!
It could use a good high pressure hot water bath.
Yes. I'm gonna do that real soon. Thanks for watching!
what we used to do in the winter is put an electric blanket on the engine over night that only works if you have electricity close by if your big engine is in good shape i would guess it is because i didnt see you spray starting fluid that tells me the engine must be in better shape than most i have seen if your oil pressure guage on your big engine is not working get it fixed that way you can watch it come up when your oil pressure is up on big engine then open the fuel throttle on big engine those pony engines were not designed to run for long periods of time the other reason you need that oil guage is when you are running operating you can know oil pressure not uncommen for oil pressure to be 20 lbs at idle when warm40-60lbs at half throttle or more if its better yhan that you have a pretty good engine
That's a lot of good information. Thank you. The electric blanket trick wouldn't be too practical in our off-grid situation. The people that owned it before we did told me to use starting fluid without warning me about it. They needed it probably because the pony motor fuel system was so gunked up. My kid is going to be taking diesel technology classes, so maybe he can fix the gauge. By then the pony will probably need a rebuild... There are local people who will do an electric starter conversion for $900, but I do like the ritual of the pony motor. I will stop liking it when the pony motor doesn't work. Thanks again for the info.
You're not a dumb ass. You're a man who's still learning the machine.
Thank you for the kind words.
Just a note: the grain tote in the video that's swinging around was nowhere near 1000 pounds, and it's not the incident in which the machine was damaged. Thanks for watching!
You can always tell an owner operator from a lame operator nice to see someone who cares about their machine! I applied for a job once and they were going to try me out I was going out on a Case 590 and I walked over to the machine lifted the side panel off and checked the oil antifreeze belts etc they said I had about 2 hours before I would start so I extended the boom and loader and greased the old girl , I got a phone call the next day telling me I was hired and asked me what I expected for a wage! What won me the position was when I checked the oil I was told later! But if you take care of your machine the machine will take care of you 😀🇨🇦
It only takes something on the machine breaking down and realizing you have an expensive lawn decoration to get you into maintenance. Thanks for watching :)
Aí sim.
those engines dont have a oil pump nor do they have bearings just a babbit bearing all they have is a splash stick on the crank no water pump just a boil system once you get oil pressure in big engine open the fuel for big engine and start it
Sometimes in the cold it takes a few extra minutes to get that big boy wanting to go. Seems worse to have failed attempts than to give it the time it needs, but I may be wrong. I can usually tell when it sounds ready, but maybe I'm also wrong and just think I can... :) Also, my gauge needs replacing.
Ya, I agree, it don't take that long to start one, I have a 1955 D4b (7u) , & my dad had a 1946 D4a (2t) , he was 2nd owner of his, & I been around em for well over 40 years, & I know 1st hand it don't take that long to run pony to let big engine to warm up
That wee dozer looks and sounds great very solid and that cab is excellent, nice ,that wee machine probably weights between 13500 and 15000 not sure ,can u Cat guys help me out???
Thank you :) The bare tractor is close to 11,000 lbs. I would say your estimate is in the ballpark after the blade, cab, and hydraulics are added.
Squatch would approve. Pony runs well.
Thanks! As long as it does its job I'm happy. Thanks for watching :)
I Envy You owning this Antique Cat But Please tell me Why are the 4 Hydraulic Lines over the Tracks
Thank you :) It's an aftermarket blade setup that was already on it when I got it. It's actually capable of being used as an angle blade, which would be pretty ridiculous on that little machine. The location and angle of the hydraulics gives a lot less leverage than what would have been supplied by Cat, as I understand it, but it's what I got. The lines were a mess when I got it. They actually dangled on the tracks. I put on all new lines (after breaking one...), and tidied them up as best I could with my meager skills at the time. There's enough clearance that the tracks never touch them. Thanks again for watching!
Love this Old Iron But i Must Know ! What is going on With 4 Hydraulic Lines going Over the Tracks ?

No Way has that machine been stood for a long time & starts that good, I've had Cats in the Sahara desert that don't start that easy after being stood for a while. NO Way
When I got her it was hit and miss… mostly miss. There was a giant handful of rust in the pony motor gas tank and the metal fuel lines were rusted and obstructed. I rebuilt the carb, replaced the fuel lines, and cleaned and coated the tank. That was four years ago. She will still start, usually on the first try if there’s no water in the gas, but the carb is due to have the jets cleaned out.
I’ve been in the desert and yes they are hard to start there. Diesel fuel doesn’t like the heat. The hummers on my tour in Afghanistan couldn’t start either. However I work in -50 Celsius and these cats start easier than the desert heat.
Interesting. Thanks.
Looks cold!
Yeah, no heater in the CAT. Lol
Sounds like you need new fuel lines, and it would probably be a safe bet to get that gas tank cleaned out too!
That sounds about right. Thanks for watching.
If it doesn't take you 20 minutes to start your machine...then your machine isn't big enough!
My machine isn't big enough! :)
Watching the full start-up and snow plowing action of an antique CAT D4-7U is a mesmerizing dive into the past, showcasing the timeless durability and power of classic machinery
They are beautiful and amazing machines. Thank you.
An absolutely perfect start - and best part is that the only lights on the dashboard are "brake" and "fasten belts" - no check engine light.
Yeah, after living with all the bells and whistles of these modern cars, I’ll take the old and simple “fasten belts” and “brake” lit up on the dashboard any day. Thanks for watching.
I love that cab style. I use those jiggle siphons also. Great way to transfer fuel. 👍👍👍
Thanks for the kind words. That style of cab seems to be common on the older cats I see. Not that it would roll easy, but I wouldn’t trust it to hold In that event…

The new stuff is fancy, but the old stuff was sure made well. I know it sat for years. The only issue I had to deal with was the pony motor fuel line and carburetor. It’s a great machine, even at over 70 years old. Thanks for watching.

Interesting air cleaner on an old D4. They came with oil bath air cleaners not the one shown.
I can't remember the details, but I recall in my manual that there were two types of air cleaners. I think the non-oil type is the later one. The pony motor has an oil bath air cleaner though. Thanks for watching!
But in reverse 😂
Yeah pretty tricky.
