The Water Forum I An Fóram Uisce is Ireland's independent statutory stakeholder body advising on water issues. We were established to provide a platform for public engagement on all matters relating to water management and the implementation of the Water Framework Directive.
With 26 members representing 13 sectors including agriculture, angling, business, community and voluntary sector, domestic water consumers, education, environment, fisheries, forestry, recreation, rivers trusts, rural water, social housing, tourism, trade unions and youth we facilitate the input of a broad spectrum of views to water management and policy in Ireland.

Sarah highlights the need for a national framework for water conservation to build resilience within water supply infrastructure and to adapt to climate change, a growing population and economic demands.

Dr Michelle McKeown of University College Cork presents her research commissioned by the Water Forum on the impacts of climate change on water quality. Extreme rainfall events pollute waterways owing to surface runoff and reduced river flows during droughts concentrate pollutants.

Dr Jean O'Dwyer from University College Cork explains that the incidence of VTEC infectious disease in Ireland is the highest in Europe. Research shows that a 2degree C increase in temperature results in a VTEC incidence increase of 219%.

Doug McMillan, Farm Carbon EIP presents. Damming peat allows for water storage, plant growth and reduces the likelihood of wildfires. Wet peat agriculture (Paludiculture) brings the water table to between 30cm and 10cm below the surface. Managed trials focus on farm output targets with economically viable crops. Learnings can be scaled up to address water, climate and nature outcomes.

The Glenalla Community come together to create a 'vision' for their river catchment, to protect water quality and biodiversity. The vision will form the basis of an action plan to protect water and nature for future generations. The community will work with the local authority and state agencies to implement their plan.
