Still Life Depicting Nude Lovers - ft. Fame Jane, in Paris

A Conversation with Arya Deva Suryanegara
มุมมอง 818ปีที่แล้ว
This year, my friend and fellow composer Arya Deva Suryanegara put on a concert at the University of Montreal. Coming from Bali, he combines the intricate acoustic sound-worlds of traditional gamelan with new electronic textures and techniques. I had the pleasure of sitting down with him to talk about some of his recent works. (He told me he wanted it to be funny so I tried to put more humor in...

can you make a video on how balinese ga,elan ended up this way? Like its origins, history and influences that made it become so fast
Wonderful and very informative video, thanks!
incredible video! I've listened to many arrangements of taruna jaya and I've watched the animation countless times over the past year or so. I can't begin to express how important having a visual representation is for music like gamelan. Good thing you were able to in this video! Anyhow, Thank you, musanim and all the musicians playing so much for allowing this to happen at all. I'm very passionate about gamelan and I'm really thankful for the people that make these informative and well-edited videos that allow for the music to be seen in a much broader light. Your vids are a blessing to have so keep doing what you're doing!!
@@greenchapstick7564 thanks so much! I hope the appreciation of the music spreads more!
I'm writing an essay on balinese gamelan music and it's influence on western composers. This video is an absolute lifesaver!
Imagine playing Gamelan Hero on hard mode.
Baru sedikit paham, memang animasi mampu memvisualisasikan dengan baik. Metode rekonstruksi nya tepat dengan animasi. Tks
Good technology,record MIDI
@@sujanawayan-t9h thank you, Suksma!
Good animasi gambelan
❤❤❤❤👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
Agustine ..,you the best theacer ,can explain in detail ,..,good job .,you are the best.
This is mindblowing. I've loved gamelan music since I first heard it as a kid in Bali. More recently I was watching videos and thought "they can't be playing all of those notes with one mallet, so they must have to syncopate and play them separately", and this video confirmed that with the section on interlocking patterns. It looks really really difficult! Especially the sangsih part, that must take a lot of practice, jeeeez. Thanks for the informative video.
@@supanover thanks!
Hi, i'm balinese and a gangsa player. And i can say, your explanation is a TOP TIER, even i just get a lot of detailed information from you ... awesome work brother...
Thank you! Suksma!
That is really an ombak, literally "wave"
Amazing video
Thanks for sharing this video
Fantastic video.
🙏🏾👏🏽
Gambelan bali ada banyak
👍👍👍👍
brilliant friend
wow I just recently found gamelan music, changed my life. This video is amazing! I appreciate you for putting it together!
fantastic work, augustine! thank you for making this beautiful illustration 😇
Thank you 🙏🏽
Fantastic video. Kudos to you and everyone involved with this. Your explanation of Kotekan patterns was so great, the visualisers really helped. I own a guitar that is customly fretted to erv wilsons meta pelog scale. A scale very similiar to ones used in bali. I installed seperate frets next to the original frets so every note has an acconpanying note 8HZ higher. Kind of my own cheated version of Ombak. Again great video, I cannot believe this is free to watch on youtube. ❤
@@oakie__doke that sounds awesome, do you have a video with it?
@@esterhammerfic I plugged it in yesterday but sadly its pretty our of action at the moment
Bravo to you, the programmers, and the musicians, Augustine! I really enjoyed the explanation. I've been listening to and watching gamelan since 1975. You and this "team" have made a worthy contribution to the music world! Thanks!
Wow amazing! I think MIDI has so much potential! In my gamelan group, we are working on making a web based MIDI player so that people can practice any part they want, at different tempos, in context with all the other instruments. We could take all the MIDI from this, feed it into some algorithms, and you would instantly have all the parts being played by samples, and you could select any part you want, change the tempo, etc. We want to stay true to the tradition of learning the music 'as is', and not just keep our noses stuck in notation, while also making it easier for people to practice the music when they are limited in their access to group rehearsals. Another very interesting thing, is that the commonly used notations, like the number systems, are very easily translated into MIDI, and vice versa. This makes notation a lot more attractive, which is vital for archiving, trans-national exchange, while at the same time respecting the tradition of aural learning. I have also seen many videos of Balinese musicians using MIDI to create their own backing tracks, to practice parts, to add more parts to small group rehearsals.
I’m preparing for my trip to Bali where I intend to spend about four weeks… I read the history of Bali… The political history of Bali… Architecture… Religion… Philosophical aspects… And of course, the history of music in every day life… I just finished a very complex book on the musicality of Bali… And then I saw your video! … What you covered was basically the equivalent of me reading a 400 page book lol I cannot tell you how helpful and how enlighten your video is and I really appreciate the effort that you put into it because it definitely shows… Thank you so much.,,
@@otisotis5869 thank you for this comment! I hope your trip is great, I just went there for the first time a few months ago!
When I first heard this, it sounded a bit chaotic. The more I listen to it though, the more I've come to appreciate how complex and insanely difficult it would be to perform something like this. These musicians are extremely talented. Thank you for sharing this and thanks to the two groups for allowing the footage of their performance to be shared here on TH-cam.
@@8Zk3 when I first heard it too, my ear couldn't make sense of it. The same with other complex music like jazz: jazz solos used to sound very random to me because my ear couldn't keep up
I fell in love with this music especially after playing in an ensemble under Pak Nyoman Wenten and this video has helped me flesh out my knowledge of the terminology a lot! Edit: if anyone has any tips on practicing Sangsih, I will be eternally grateful
@@btat16 Pak Wenten is the man! I usually practice sangsih by recording the polos on my phone (at a slow tempo) and then listening in headphones while I play the sangsih
@@esterhammerfic Your recording trick is doing amazing! I recorded the Polous at various speeds and am practicing Sangsih at the Cantilan right now. With it being my own recording, I can’t blame anyone else for speeding up or slowing down lol. Thanks so much!
@@btat16 excellent! I think it really takes the pressure off when you can do it as many times as you want
Great video! Really helped me with a research/experimenting with music project I'm doing for school. My plan is to make a Gamelan version of Everything in its right place by Radiohead :)) All the animations, midi representations, layering really made it easy to understand and engaging.
damn... not expecting would be this good of a youtube video
along with jazz and death metal and marching drums I couldn't be more impressed by the players
saya yakin orang Indonesia sendiri gak akan bisa menjelaskan hal seperti ini dengan detail dan mudah di mengerti😂, mungkin hanya dengan kata paham saja gak cukup
@@dinggarasta9528 terimakasih! Saya rasa animasi bisa bantu menjelaskan musik 🙏

Thank you for making this video! I am using it as a reference in my Akira themed sound design course :D I really appreciate all of the effort and I know my students' brains will MELT and ooze out their ears when they click your link ;)
@@illGatesMusic thanks for the message! I was hoping it would be an ideal video for a classroom introduction, so I hope they enjoy! My other video about the work Teruna Jaya is also good for understanding the full orchestration of Balinese gamelan 🙏👍
Woahhhhhhh, as a Balinese, watching this videos is mind-blowing! I can see this is very hard thing to make. Totally speechless man.... KEREN!!!
This is a phd-worth of a video
damn really nice <3... nice work!
WTH! The explanation is top tier! Thank you for your contribution to the world.
I am Balinese and played Balinese gamelan. This is a great video❤
Thank you for this. Gamelan is my favourite kind of music, and I enjoy it for the mathematics hidden within it. This video is better than top tier information for the curious.
@@corystevens7029 thank you!

thank you very much for teaching us how to appreciate this art
This is absolutely wonderful stuff! Thank you!
Love the expertise and respectful inclusion of the artist and culture. A rare treat, kind thanks.
This was a very good video, your pronunciation really added to it and demonstrates how deeply you learned about gamelan music.
That's a relief to hear because I'm very self-conscious about my Indonesian/Balinese pronunciation. I did so many takes to try to sound correct! Your comment makes me feel better about it 🙏
Wahnsinn ... I am setting a poem on music and Gamelan was knocking on the door ... very very inspirering ... thank YOU !
Thank you so much for this. Gamelan is my favourite music. I especially loved the detail of following the notes!
